US border control officials are heavy handed. I know people who refuse to go to the States again because dealing with them just spoils ones visit. My daughter and her friend found entering the US at Newark airport traumatic and she said three or four days of their holiday was ruined just getting over the experience of being humiliated by them. Maybe they were over sensitive, I don't know but it certainly affected them.

I was thru the north and south border in the 80s. Each end- I was harrassed by US customs. It was scarey and embarrassing. In Mexico I crossed illegally. The sign was in Spanish- and the building looked like an opulant hotel; which was the crossing point. To add to that- I flew from Chicago to San Diego- drove rental car to Yuma AZ. Walked accross. My driver license said- "Palos Hieghts, IL" [sounds spanish, but also sounds like Palistine!] So when the guard asked where I was from- so summarize in a word was hard. He could have held me 72 hours.

Then on one trip to PA from Chicago. I went in thru Detroit/Windsor ONT- up the 401- to Toronto- then down thry Niagara. Well- at Niagara I was unable to open my trunk. This was not acceptable. So AAA had to come and break it open. Not a thing was in it.

I am sorry to our friends in Canada. I want to change it.  Canada is one of us! [I mean that in good spirit]

Nope. Many Free People won't suffer the fools at the DHS and TSA.

I wasn't there so I don't know what happened other than what my daughter and her friend told me but she and her friend said they were interogated ( I admit this was probably an exaggeration) and humiliated in public. The girls are two blond haired blue eyed, sixteen year olds of north European appearance so they couldn't have been mistaken for potential middle eastern terrorists. Both have family in America and both had extensive information about where they were going and who was meeting them at the airport. My daughter's friend said it was as though they and the officials were speaking different languages, nothing they said made an impact on them.

Did they ever participate in any protests, or have they publicly posted any statements unpopular with the "Loyal Bushies"?

The no-fly list contains *many* names of people who have committed no crimes, and aren't a threat.

It's almost like some contractor is being paid by the name to maintain the list!

I used to go fishing up in Canada every year for a decade, but getting back into the US became an increasing hassle over time. The last time I went, they pulled everything out of a very well-packed van (think tetris) looked through it all, and left it in a messy pile for us to repack. The incident took almost two hours, from stop to go.

It was evident by their behavior that they really expected to find something. They found nothing, of course, but the incident convinced me not to bother in the future.

As a side note, we never had problems getting into Canada.

Figures, they're too tough on the Canadian border but not tough enough on the Mexican border.

FWIW, that's when the USD and CND were upside, down, and likely they thought you were importing "BC Bud".

Those days are over however, with the destruction of the value of the USD. They won't be looking too hard anymore.

Well at least they didn't get busted by the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), they'd have been tazered to death by now.

Mistakes will happen but an apology is certainly in order.

Z.

Canadian Marijuana. Because, as I understand, it's all indoor, their quality is lightyears ahead of the Mexicans.

Up to recently, it's been one of Canada's most profitable exports. With the dollar diving, that's over.

Who ever thought Showtime's "Weeds" would be a documentary?

In regards to a mess left after a search- in my experience-= if you are cordial- and ask them to please try not to make a mess, that they make a lesser mess. when my house was searched, i verbalized this. while the officer complained about my place being messy- and knowing just how rude they CAN be- IMO the place was less destroyed.  [yes they did have a warrant; this was many years ago] Getting cocky with lew enforcement is dumb. tho asserting you legal rights is smart.

Ive had some very strange questions asked  while going thru customs to the US. Luckily I dont embarass easily and am not having to be discreet about my kink side, but the worst one was after a rushed trip to the airport worrying about being late, having to have the exact address and phone number about the hotel I was going to be staying in and who was paying for it(I didnt know and had to leave , find a phone and call the person who had arranged for the hotel), and in the middle of  a hot flash...I arrived panting and sweating, bright red in the face... the customs ordered my bags be searched because I was acting suspiciously. Funny thing was I ended up having a nice long chat about toys and gave out two business cards  as a result.  Some of them are surly and unfriendly, but the majority  are ok if you dont get stroppy with them. I would HATE to do their job.
It sure hasnt deterred me from coming and going as often as I can
Lucy

Gee, this was a bad experierience for a family out to Xmas shop.  i agree mistakes do happen, but to add that "if they come back it might happen again" is terrible.  Why can't the system recognise they are not the person(s) under warrant?

BTW, i thought it was necessary to have a passport to cross the border?
