So I generally let the person rant on until the silence makes them uncomfortable and they go away. 


Great advice, Sir...and I'm sure it usually works.  I've noticed, with a handful of people, no matter how long I stay out of a particular thread, or even this forum in general...I return to find their dark vitriol spewed yet further.  I can't take it and wonder what it must be like to be them. 
 
There is one in particular, who delights in twisting words and taking phrases out of context in order to appear to be ‘right’.  I give up...and am accused of 'running'.  Still, like you I see no point in continuing...I can see I end up just frothing at the mouth just like them!  Ugg

........let's see.......i was beaten up by skinheads while in my teens for kissing a black girl friend of mine in the street.......have been beaten up by a squaddie for wearing a CND badge.....have been beaten up by a drunk arsehole for shouting at him to stop beating his girlfriend....yet, by the peculiar US definitions, i am still a liberal.

Perhaps some of us don't let violent buggers distort our basic beliefs.

The moment we allow violence to distort our basic beliefs, or silence our voice, we shall become slaves, and not in a good way.
