i have insomnia i always have. i sleep when my body will let me. and i have opted for not taking meds because anything that makes everyone else sleep 8 hours will knock me out for 10-12 and i can't do that i have a kid and i am also looking for a job. i just deal with my insomnia as best i can.

My husband was told to take Benadryl for his insomnia.  It worked for him for awhile.

The only thing that helped for me to some degree was therapy. As in the psychiatric kind.

Yes, I would like to know a cure for it too.I can be dead tired, but the mind won't shut off,I am and always have been my most creative at night, sometimes I don't bother sleeping at all when I have problems, I just stay awake until nature eventually takes it's course and I sleep deep and long, usually a day or two later.

I have tried Lavender on the pillow, valerian tea and camomile, malatonin, kava kava and 5htp.All manner of self hypnosis and audio cd's, that just makes me tired, but does not shut the mind down.

I have taken meds that increase the amount of seratonin, works for a while until I get used to it, then back to normal.

I did think my inability to sleep properley was due to panic.Panic in that I expect to oversleep, something I was always good at, maybe it is psychological, but I think it is a set pattern now and a hard habit to break.

I will see here if any more ideas come to light.

pinksugarsub,

the most common source of insomnia is depression and/or anxiety.  there are many ways to deal with it, including breathing excersises, medication, and therapy. 

Not all people are comfortable taking prescribed drugs (or OTC drugs for that matter), if you are that type of a person, then therapy may be the best way to go, but it is no quick fix.

Breathing control is a great self help tool, breathing right is a crucial part of sleep for many anxiety sufferers.

as for drugs, do not go for the herbal OTC kind without consulting your physician first.  I find that Ambien works well for me, but its different for everyone.

of course, insomnia does not have to be connected to depression or anxiety, but it is common

My Sir beats my butt past the fighting and into the lying and accepting and I sleep like a baby after it.   Is wonderful, and nonmedical.

My suggestions:

- warm noncaffeinated beverage (I'm a fan of chamomile; some people swear by warm milk)
- a nice hot bath
- aromatherapy (lavendar knocks most people out like a light. I'm a bit wacky so I use a perfume blend containing phlox flower and an eensy bit of light musk- have never had a nightmare while wearing it)
- meditation, guided or otherwise.
- Biofeedback is pretty cool too.
- Consider (if it's what you go for) a good sound thrashing. That'll tire you right out.
- If specific life stuff is keeping you awake nights, talk it out- with your partner, or a therapist, or a friend, whoever.
- If absolutely nothing anyone has suggested has worked, see a doctor or homeopath. I found melatonin pretty effective some years ago, but it left me quite dopey the next day; a professional might have ideas for you.

Edited to Add:
What're you sleeping on? Is it an older mattress type thing? How squishy are your pillows? Maybe what you need is a new surface to sleep on, or some new pillows that're of a different firmness, or at least flip your mattress over if it's inner-spring.

Another thing to try would be some tea containing skullcap or valerian root. Just check with a pharmacist first if you are taking any medications and make sure there aren't any known negative interactions.

I've had insomnia for years. In the end, it turned out my intestines weren't functioning well, so my body missed out on just about all vitamins and minerals it needs. A magnesium tablet was the first thing that helped me (after that came looking for the cause of course).
