An IM Infatuation Turned to Romance. Then the Truth Came Out.

Wired Magazine
By Nadya Labi   Email   08.21.07 | 2:00 AM

Extract:

Every morning of every weekday for 12 years, Thomas Montgomery punched in at the Dynabrade factory in Clarence, a small town in upstate New York. He strapped on his goggles and stood at his machine until the late afternoon, churning out components for power tools. After work, he walked the family dog, Shadow, and took his two daughters to swim practice. He became such a regular presence at the local swim club that he was named its vice president. He tried to be a good father and a decent husband to his wife of 16 years, Cindy. There were a few things he enjoyed — poker night on Fridays with the guys, playing Texas Hold 'Em on Pogo.com, and the Dynabrade euchre tournament, which he dominated for two years in a row. For the most part, though, life was uneventful.

Which may be why Montgomery looked at himself — a 45-year-old former marine with a reddish mustache, bulging gut, and disappearing hair — and decided to become someone else. That person, he wrote on Dynabrade stationery that he stored in his toolbox at work, would be an 18-year-old marine named Tommy. He would be a black belt in karate, with bullet scars on his left shoulder and right leg, thick red hair, and impressive dimensions (6'2", 190 pounds, and a "9" dick"). Emboldened by his new identity, Montgomery logged onto Pogo in the spring of 2005 and met TalHotBlondbig50 — a 17-year-old from West Virginia, whose name, he later learned, was Jessica.

He began instant-messaging "Jessi," who later also went by the handle "peaches_06_17," and the lies flowed easier with every press of the Return key. His mom had died of cancer when he was 12, he told her, and his father was a military man.

The entire story is kinda long, but very interesting, and has some important lessons.

I'd recommend reading the whole thing.

Okay, I confess... I'm not really the 45 year old, 5' 4", 125 pound submissive that you think I am; in reality I'm a 22 year old, blond exotic dancer.  I'm so sorry, my darling dom.

(Darn!  That won't work, will it? )

With regard to the article, it's a sad commentary on something that is becoming far too common in this internet age... reinventing oneself.  You really never know who you are talking to online until you actually meet and get to know someone in person over time.  It's nice to think that you can be careful enough or that you're too savvy to be fooled, but you're only fooling yourself.

Just a couple of years ago I spoke online with a dominant from here for a couple of weeks.  The conversations we had were fairly in depth and I though I was being cautious.  Although in retrospect I could see glaring red flags, at the time he seemed very genuine.

He didn't change his age or physical description too much from what it actually was, but this "single, successful businessman" did turn out to be a married, financially struggling father of five.  I didn't find this out until months later when I discovered that he had eventually sexually assaulted some poor woman.  Last I looked, he was still on the most wanted list for the county where he resided at the time.

There but for the grace of God, go I.

It's easy to fall for a faceless stranger, where his words are read in a tone you want to hear and you can make him into anything you want...................the perfect escape from reality..................  but reality is he is just another human being struggline along like the rest of us........searching for something that just doesn't exist.
Hmmm sounds like that was from experience....

lol... Thank you for the offer, NG, but a Priest isn't necessary for me. I go straight to FirmhandKY... he's the "top guy" for me.
