Okay, I'm not really sure where this should go - it's not an item sought, so I'm putting it here. If the mods wish to move it, be my guest. I am in Calgary, Alberta, and will be househunting beginning in the next week or so (when I find a realtor). Since ideally I would like to be able to tell my realtor exactly what I'm looking for (a home that has a suited basement, or basement with a separate entrance which my slave can live in, and which will house my dungeon) I'm looking for a kink-positive realtor. Any advice?

Thanks Phin. The list doesn't include Alberta, but I have cross-posted this to our local groups as well, so hopefully one of them can help - or may in fact be a realtor themselves. We can be subtle in describing it, but the hunt will be much easier if we don't have to lie.

I would not think it is a lie saying you need a home with a basement with either private or side entrance .It is just saying what your looking for plain and simple . Like i want a hot tub , though not going to tell a realtor i have to have a hot tub cuz i dig the bubbles on my nekid body .Or i would really love a 4 car garage please find that for me .Not telling again that i have 3 cars and one of the stalls if going to be a dungeon type space . TMI = to much info .just ask what you want in a house and they get to seek it out for you .Happy hunting .

My neighbor (in our kinky little apartment building) is a kinky realtor here in Minneapolis. He's helped more than a few community members here find and sell homes. If you would like, I'll ask him if I can pass on his email to you. Ben

Great thread. It is nice to know that other people are looking for the same kinds of details in a house. I agree with most of the other folks, there is no need to have to tell the realtor that you want an extra room for playspace (or whatever the specifics) . Just describe that you want an extra room. I am currently looking too in Metro Detroit. Maybe I want a cathedral ceiling b/c I want to suspend my slave high in the air and use him as target practice for my whip. I'd just say I want a cathedral ceiling. It also reminds me of how funny it was for me buying lengths of chain at Home Depot for my pet. I was giving this huge description of what I needed and why, and all the salesperson needed to know was which one and how much of it. I babbled on about I need to chain a fence closed but I needed a chain link with a smooth finish because...uh, uh, kids migh brush up against it - yeah, that's right -and I didnt anyone to get hurt...babble babble...He was otherwise courteous but completely disinterested. Good luck with the house hunt!

i am a "kink-positive" REALTOR in Austin, TX. When i assist buyers with finding the right home, it's a very personal experience whether the client is kinky or not. In order to share the client's vision of their new home, i ask a LOT of questions before we even begin selecting properties to tour together, and more questions at each address to refine the search parameters as we go. With most clients, this fairly intimate understanding of their needs and intentions allows me to "visualize" their next home, which helps me find it for them. And finding the right house is just the beginning - by closing a month or so later, clients are hugging me and inviting me to their kids' birthday parties. Not all REALTORS work that closely with their clients, but if that's the level of service and involvement Y/you desire, then by all means do try to find O/one with whom Y/you can openly discuss Y/your lifestyle and exactly what Y/you need and want in Y/your home. i know a couple of other kinky REALTORS in Austin, and a loan officer, but i met them through local BDSM groups, not through my local board or any other real estate affiliations. i'm thinking the best place to find local kinky professionals in any field may be at a munch.

I am a realtor in Toronto, Canada. When you're buying a home, you should find a realtor who takes pride in finding you the most appropriate property for your needs, at a price to match your budget. If you engage a professional who knows the local market inside-out and who takes the time to ask you the right questions, and then goes out of his way to show you properties that meet your criteria, you should get what you want. That realtor doesn't necessarily have to be kink-friendly to get you what you are looking for. However, if I knew that my client wanted a separate-entrance slave-quarters and/or a high-ceilinged dungeon space, I would be able to do a better job than someone who was not privy to your particular reasons for needing such a space. I may spot a house with a heated stone block detached garage or I might point out to you that a particular house style has a 12 X 10 foot usable attic space that would be relatively inexpensive to open up. I act as a problem-solver not as a pitchman: the more relevant information you can give me, the better able I am to find you exactly what you're looking for.

If by your dungeon, you mean you are a prodomme, you need to tell the realtor that you are looking for a place zoned for adult businesses. In most places I know, rules prohibit such business from being in a residential area. Getting a two family house is easy, you need a place with a small rental apartment and that anyone can understand. But asking the realtor, even if kink friendly, to help you break the law is wrong. Go to the town hall and ask for a copy of the regulations relating to running a business out of your home. Then read it thoroughly.

I don't know how the housing market works in Canada but here in the UK we have estate agents and vendors sell their properties by a particular estate agent. In other words, buyers have to go house hunting at a variety of estate agents in order to find the house they want. If such a situation existed in Canada then I imagine you would be limiting the numbers of potential properties to view. I think it all depends on who you are dealing with - some people will be open-minded about such things, others might find it morally offensive. Then you might have someone who is enthusiastic but, because he or she knows little about BDSM, what they perceive as being a good dungeon might be totally wrong. As others have commented I would simply state you need the extra space and leave it at that. There was a similar thread on this over at www.informedconsent.co.uk a month or so ago but it was UK specific so perhaps not relevant to your situation.

What a dilemma you are facing!....You really need to find a kink friendly realtor because there is no possibility that any other realtor could possibly solve your problem. When looking at a potential property you have no choice but to point out to the realtor the exact corner of the basement that your slave will be sodomized. It's excremely important that the realtor be able to visualize how much space must be necessary to tie down your sub or engage in activities such as flogging and golden showers without inhibiting your backswing or getting piss on the walls. It is simply unfathomable to think that if you told a "vanilla" realtor...That you value your privacy and that you need a home that has a walk in basement as well as either far enough away from your neighbors or has enough insulation that your privacy as well as that of your neighbors would not be infringed upon. I don't think that there are many realtors who give a rats ass about your fisting techniques or why you value your privacy....They want their commission and will do what they can to accomodate your wishes. Obviously we have lost the ability to utilize any form of discretion or once again common sense in applying wiitwd to the "outside world." My heart weeps for the future. Thank God I have found a kink friendly barber, accountant, and grocer. It removes that embarassing explanation when purchasing a zucchini or a cucumber that I enjoy salad...Or that alarming/embarassed look from the check out girl when I'm attempting to pay for an assortment of oddly shaped gourds...Go in peace.
