I always thought the battle noted here would be interesting. Equality of the sexes should include the same dress code standards. It seems in NYC the battle has become public. I can't wait for the Supreme Court to get this case.

Prosecutors so far have been smart enough to generally not take on this issue. I don't see how it can be won. Even the "Public Standards of Decency"; the usually trash excuse used, would not hold up to Constitutional standards where one specific sex is not permitted to dress (or undress) in the same manner as the other sex. It would be fun!

Another example of the US "Puritanical" roots. I bet it's one aspect that the Europeans (Anglo mostly) were glad to ship to the "New World". How childish and immature as a society the US looks when anything like this gets attention.

Enough editorializing; here's the story from the front page of the NY Daily News:

quote:

Women's nude awakening

Oglers surround protesters

Topless women on skates, bikes and foot drew a surging crowd of grateful gawkers in Columbus Circle yesterday when they doffed their shirts to affirm the right to bare a lot more than arms.

In the late '70's or early '80s a group of women known as the "Top Free 7" bared their breasts in Rochester, NY in an attempt to gain equal protection and equal rights under the law that allowed men to go topless.

It was a big event for this one horse town... ~grin~ and several of the "Top Free" made the talk show circuit, including Phil Donahue.

Apparently the state of NY is the Tit capital of the US....

We (women) have the right to bare our breasts in Ontario, Canada. Although it is rarely seen, the courts affirmed our right to do so several years ago. And yes, pot IS easier to get here too!!

I think that is the biggest problem with the paranoid conservatives on this issue. I can just imagine their view if this were to about... women running topless & the streets full of bouncing boobies!!

It is about freedom of choice & an equal standing between genders. I have personally found it distracting to have a man go topless around me at times, yet it is perfectly legal for him to do so. I feel women should also have the freedom of choice. Along with making the choice women will also know that being topless in public can cause some people discomfort or distraction. At least it would be her choice.

I don't see myself running half-naked if the laws were to change, but I am not happy that my gender alone dictates to me what I can & cannot do.

I was a breast-feeding Mom. Though I never exposed myself, there were times when a crying hungry baby was first priority. I always covered myself with a blanket large enough to conceal my breast. I was actually approached more than once & was told I would have to remove myself. I politely answered,"I am aware of the non-smoking signs & the no skate boarding on the sidewalk sign out front, yet I somehow missed the sign that said this was non-breast feeding zone. Could you please show that one to me once I finish feeding my baby?"

Due to lack of AC, I'm resigned to walkin around in next to nothing to stay cool. If it became legal for women to walk around shirtless like men do, you can bet I'd be one of the first to celebrate. 5'8, 150 (though i look a lot less), pale, B-cup me would be celebrating topless without giving a fuck if I was being stared at.

back in 1994, i had my ex walk around manhattan topless. we passed a group of nypd officers. they just whistled.

what i want to know is, when will it be acceptable for me to show up to the office in a skirt? it really isn't fair that women get can get away with bearing their legs in a business setting and men can't, especially as hot as it's been this summer.

And let us lose the neckties too.

It was a big event cause all their breasts froze off within moments thereafter.

SoCal men show up for work in shorts all the time, even in business offices, even during our "cold" winters where temperatures dip to below 65! Coming from NYC, it took a LOT of getting used to, but now my "casual Friday" approved dress code includes shorts. And hell if my guys wanted to wear skirts, I'd tell them - Go for IT!
