From the "Hey, y'all, watch THIS" Department...

Take a 1" length of Christmas garland, and dip it in 90% rubbing alcohol.  Place on skin under a glass cup. Press down gently on the cup to contain the fire.

Now take a Violet Wand, metal electrodes seem to work best, and touch it to the cup.

*woof!*

Heeheehee

The spark will jump to the tinsel through the glass insulator and ignite the rubbing alcohol. The fire will burn up the available oxygen in the cup VERY quickly, creating the suction, and extinguishing itself before causing any real damage.

Note- rubbing alcohol is likely to strip the dye from any colored tinsel, so use silver if you want to stay clean, or colors if you prefer a festive polka-dot effect, as the dye will leak down onto the skin inside the cup.

The "Hey, y'all, watch THIS" Department wishes you a Merry Christmas.

I adore fire play and I am intrigued.  I would be worried about the plastic melting to the sub.  Have you actually tried this, or just heard it suggested?  Your description sounds as though you have done it repeatedly.  I get that, as in regular fire-cupping, the fire goes out before the flames can do any harm, but what happens to the plastic?

Well, if the glass is small it should be relatively safe. Stoicometry for gasoline is 14.7:1, I think for alcohol it is more like 12:1. At 12:1 we are talking alcohol vapor here because that is what really burns, not the liquid.

Now 91% isopropyl alcohol releases alot of vapor, that is why it is used in industry to clean certain things. We have no way of knowing how much is soaked into the tinsel garland either, but we do know there is a limited amount of oxygen.

But then there is a hole in the whole theory. The only suction that can be created is by contraction. The gases escape when the flame burns and everything expands, and then the suction is created when it cools. This may happen very fast, but it is what is happening.

If the glass were held tightly to the body so no gases could escape there would be no suction. I think the biggest danger here is if the glass slips off, letting the fire into the atmosphere with it's almost unlimited supply of oxygen. Then someone might get burned.

Just tried it on a whim last night. i used glass cups (votive holders) rather than plastic, and the garland is actually a very fine tinfoil strung together by wire, so there was no plastic involved.

However, one thing to note... if it's done over a hairy body part, turn on the fan before removing the cup!

It's my understanding that the suction is not caused by the cooling, but by the gaseous oxygen being converted into much denser H20. Never was especially good at chemistry, tho.

This sounds like fun, BUT......will using a glass cup allow the spark inside it to the foil? Glass is a very poor conductor.

Yup, at least with the Violet Ray set we have (branded as a Sears Roebuck, believe it or not). It requires a bare metal conductor, rather than one of the glass attachments, but the unit throws enough voltage to arc straight through the glass.

Well, it works because the wand's output is high frequency AC, actually RF. Whatever is on either side on the glass pretty much forms the plates of capacitor. DC would never work.

AC works because capacitors pass AC, but they block DC.

It's like those globes that when you touch them the internal arc follows your hand. They were in vogue about ten years ago.

All I can say is don't feed it any air, or it might not be pleasant.

Not sure why...my preferred ignition source for fireplay is the violet wand, actually. It means only one open flame at a time and M and I find it much easier to control.
