I have a question for all you good people:

I've been told and have read that one should use a water-based lubricant. That being said, is it safe to use vasoline as a lubricant for anal sex? Someone told me that I don't WANT to use a water-based lubricant for that, that it dries out too fast.

I can't wait to hear your answers, thanks in advance!

I was told to never use a petroleum based product internally... there are lots of lubs out there that don't dry up quick and are made just for that... KY is great.

Thank you Jewel, that's what I was told too.... not to be a pain, but do you know WHY one isn't supposed to used petroleum-based products internally?

First, two excellent books, Anal Pleasure and Health and Trust by Bert Herrman.

The problem with lubricating the anus is that it is designed to be hydrophillic so it takes up most water that comes in with the walls. Water based lubes quickly dry out and worse become sticky. The objection to oil based lubes is in regard to the vagina which has a slow self-cleaning system. As we all know the anus is quickly self-cleaning (sometimes uncomfortably so). Crisco fell into disrepute with fisters because it's a friendly medium for bacteria. However, if one is only playing with one person this isn't a factor. The bad thing with crisco is that it was used in fisting parlors where literally dozens of hands would be in and out of the same bucket.

Of course, science marches on. Silcone based lubes like ID Platinum work great everwhere. Just don't use them with silicone toys.

If you are using a condom, never use petroleum based lubricants. They eat through the condom.

If no condoms are being used... take your pick.

I have always opted for Crisco as it is easily available, recommend by many and inexpensive enough that it has one time usage for me. I will spoon some into a container and then dispose of it when done…no contamination. I never cross over my toys or lubricants from one partner to another I just don’t risk it.

ahhhh.....anal sex question ...how happy that makes me!

water-based lubes don't last long enough; silicone lubes are good and long-lasting; hemp-based lubes are healthier, especially for women; petroleum - no way - not good for the insides nor for condoms; and then there is always good old-fashioned olive oil - mmmmm, outlasts them all and is a natural lubricant for ALL of our lovely body parts! Repeating Thorns- NEVER use ANY oil products if you will be using latex or condoms.

And ALWAYS use condoms unless you are absolutely monogamous long term with tests confirmed.

Sabella -> RE: V"ass"oline?????? (8/18/2005 9:45:31 AM)

If you are not using condoms try olive, almond or coconut oil. I have have used all 3 of these head to toe! Each has a different texture & work well as lubricants. Bonus is no weird chemicals or perfumes or stickiness.

Allow me to introduce you to the best lube I've come across for back door fun:

Action Body Products Extreme Glide

It's completely waterless, lasts for quite a bit (remember, coverage is just as important as duration... you don't fill a car up with half a quart of oil... always use the rule "too much lube is never enough" for bum play). It's one of the better products I've tried... never use water based for anal. You'll be using too much lube just to keep the friction down. One place I have found this stuff is at Southern Secrets off Highway 124 and High Point Road in Snellville. It's might be a little pricey compared to KY, Durex, or Astroglide, but they have some BIG bottles, and I'm convinced this is the best lube period.

One of the good qualities of this lube is that it doesn't have a heavy coating... if anything... sensetivity is enhanced greatly by this stuff ;) Hope you can get your hands on a bottle ASAP!

Oh..and as far as why you shouldn't use petroleum based products (sorry, still a little sleepy):

Here's a quote from www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1272.html :
"Vaseline is petroleum jelly, which is not water-soluble. When you put it on your hands and try to wash it away with water, it doesn't budge. It just sort of moves around, but it doesn't dissolve. That's why it increases the chances of getting a vaginal or anal infection when used during vaginal and anal sex, since bacteria don't easily wash away. Also, when petroleum jelly is used with condoms, it eats away at the rubber (latex), decreasing the effectiveness of condoms. (Instead, use petroleum jelly to moisturize very dry skin.)"

I remember reading about petroleum based products can "clog" what it comes in contact with, which can lead to troubles when used internally (something to do about the surface of what it's in contact with). Don't remember too much.

I believe if you want the "thick" lube feeling of vaseline, you can go with crisco. Google can find you lots of information if you put your words in right :)
