You have  my sypmathy.  I am on day 4 of no sleep last night I didnt even get 20minutes.  Ive been on sleep meds but they make me feel really ill.  Ive tried everything and got a load of really good suggestions on here when I posted about it a while ago.  The best being a fish tank  Instead I downloaded a virtual one and it does help sometimes just laying and watching it.  Ive also found thatgetting out of bed and just doing something helps. Usually I try and do the ironing lol.  Its awful when you are so tired and just cant switch off.  And its scary when it can make you paranoid and hallucinate, not something I ever want to expereince again from sleep depravation.  I hope you find an answer soon x

I have a horrible time getting to sleep and the usual suspects don't work...at best, I might get a little drowsy with meds. But, I happened along a medicine that will usually do the trick...promethazine for nausea knocks me right out. And, as a plus, I don't immediately wake up when it wears off. I don't get great sleep, and I wake up cranky but it's better than nothing...

Sometimes Klonipin will work, but I don't take it often because of it's high rate of addiction. Whatever you do, be careful mixing any medications...even OTC medications. Some things will react in unexpected ways with other medications. And, anything that depresses your respiration should be monitored carefully. Take the smallest dose possible.

Oh, and don't borrow anybody else's prescriptions. My sister took half of one of my "nitey nite" pills and slept for an entire weekend...and woke up with a wicked hangover complete with headaches and vomiting.

I read that you're going to another physician, so I would try and get my prescriptions filled at the same pharmacy...they will usually notice dangerous interactions. Make sure you confirm anything over the the counter that you might take.

Sorry for going on so long, but I've known too many people who've gotten very sick over stupid stuff like Dramamine and Tylenol PM. When in doubt, err on the side of caution...for my money, I'd rather not sleep than not wake up.

my doctor's nurse told me that sometimes benedryl (diphenhydramine) will help make you just drowsy enough to drift off without making you dopey.  avoid the caffine, the sugars, make sure you are well hydrated, carbs do help with relaxation so a small helping of something starchy is a relatively harmless step to try.  exercise in the morning, hot showers in the evening and a nice warm cup of maybe caffine free tea or hot cocoa might help.  my therapist suggested a natural supplement, melatonin.  it worked for me.  hubby uses the benedryl.

I am an insomniac too.  5 hrs a night is a great nights sleep for me.  2+1+2.  I rarely sleep without waking up and watching tv or something.  UNLESS, I am playing hard, or having a ton of orgasms, I just don't get enough sleep.  But one good session or two, and a few orgasms and I sleep for hours.
I need some sleep.

I suffer from a similar problem...I was given Lunesta and took it once before I said NO more..lol...I got the wonderful side effect of short term memory loss...Apprently lunesta when combined with Zoloft and WElbutrin has that effect...Needless to say it wasnt very fun...espically when I locked my work keys in the store...
None the less I can relate...Whats worked for me was taking a low dose of melatonin along with exercise shortly before bed and then reading for a short time or a shower....Its helped ....Its not perfect but it does work 90% of the time for me anyway.

Good luck hun!

An odd suggestion, but you could try roast turkey breast.  There is actually a chemical in Turkey that makes you sleepy.  Other than that silly tidbit, I'd suggest melatonin and a hot bath.

I have had bouts of insomnia and what a former poster said about making your bedroom  a place for sleep only is important. Or get two bedrooms. One for sleep. The colors should be pastels without alot of design, too busy material with lots of designs can interfere with sleep. Like clouds with a blue sky or something. Also do you feel safe? When a person sleeps they are vulnerable, if necessary put a bolt lock on your door so you feel safe, if that is contributing to the problem.  They also have white noise machines that can help a person sleep or some find nature sounds relaxing. There are also cd's that can promote alpha or beta brain waves if you have a player that can play it repeatedly and shut itself off. No coke, chocolate, coffee , tea or anything containing caffiene. The problem with sleeping pills the more you take them , the more you need them and they lose their ability to work. When I take a sleeping pill which I do rarely, I don't sleep the next night, thats almost a given. Also hard exercise . Something that gets your heart rate up, swimming is good if you have any kind of joint problems or pain.

P.S. A headache when you wake-up, irritability, waking up constantly and insomnia are classic signs for low oxygen levels during sleep. You could get a sleep study done at a clinic. You really might have sleep apnea. If you do, the problem is easily solved. good Luck!! Nurse

I agree with laurell3.  Often exercise (either rigorous or gentle) can be the key.  However, when combined with these other steps it increases your success rate.
  1. Get up the same time each day, even if you are still tired from no sleep.
  2. Avoid naps.
  3. Exercise well each day.
  4. Eat well, with only very light eating after 6pm or so.
  5. Design your own bedtime routine and use the same routine each night.
  6. Include a relaxation technique in your routine.
  7. Perhaps even include an orgasm in your routine.
  8. Read (not tv or radio) to unwind. (They actually stimulate areas of the brain)
  9. When you get drowsy, close the book. If you become alert again, open the book.  Repeat as needed.
  10. Get in bed the same time each day.

By the time you do all these, you are likely to be sleeping much better.  I have worked with people with a 20 year history of insomnia and they became good sleepers.
In the short run, working on these ten things makes YOU the one doing the actions, rather than feeling like your insomnia is beating you up.

I wish you well,
LadyD.

This is great advise! I suffered with insomnia for years and this is what worked for me. Give up caffiene (sorry, it was hard for me too).

I do yoga and walk in the woods.

I do (most of the time) stick to a regular schedule.

If all else fails...Valerian root (smells and tastes like dirty sweat socks, but works for me)

k
