Dog Houses are in themselves not any good for keeping warm, but a properly designed one can give a dog plenty of warmth down to -60^. Basically it has to have a raised door and floor, and several inches of insulating material like straw. The raised door keeps the straw inside, and prevents moisture build up/ freezing to the ground.. Any animal can curl up and burrow in the straw and stay alive. Of course breed does affect the comfort involved, and a cocker spaniel will be much less comfortable than a Husky or Malamute. My husky/chow mix loves temperatures in the 20s and refuses to come inside.

I would be leery of the heating pad advice, especially if there is frostbite involved, which at 35 isn't likely to happen. Warm NOT HOT water with a spike of meat/fish flavoring, combined with some cuddling(body heat), would be my advice. It is best to gradually warm up.

Dogs are generally fine until you start getting well below freezing. Remember, dogs pull sleds in the arctic. They do much better in low temps than humans do. Still, I think you did exactly right. Bring them in, and let their own body heat bring them back up to normal... slowly.... using an electric blanket, or a heating pad could send an older dog into shock.

April still tends to be very wet and kind of cold, we don't get relief till middle of may lol.

Happy to report he's apparently fine. I was feeling rather guilty though lol.

I have found that if it is a small dawg ten minutes in the microwave on defrost works pretty good. Larger dawgs can be put in the clothes dryer on the low setting. Just don't forget to let them out when the buzzer goes off.

I was thinking the same thing. I think most dogs could handle 35 degrees quite well. But the mental scars of being left out in the cold for over two hours, that's a different story.
