Seems that BTK was into BDSM. Take a look here:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/08/18/btk.killings/index.html

He was also the President of his Lutheran church when he was arrested. So, will the average person reading this conclude:

A. Lutherans are sick and twisted, and something needs to be done about them.

B. BDSMers are sick and twisted, and something needs to be done about them.

Inquiring minds will want to know, you know.

He may have been into BDSM but he wasn't part of the local community. He didn't belong to the group or attend any of its functions.

BTK was also a Boy Scout leader I believe. And like onceburned said, I see no evidence he was involved in the local community.

Unfortunately John Robinson was. Or if not involved, at least familiar to a few in the local scene. And his coverage included a lot more information on BDsM. In fact Dateline (or one of those other TV newsmags) put another lifestyle site up on their screen as an example of places he looked for victims. Made me chuckle for the publicity, until I relaized I had a profile on there.

This is the first I have heard about BTKs atually being into anything kinky (other than the Bind part of his name).

Problem as I see it is, he was not into the local community. He wasn't really into BDSM as we know it. However, that is the problem. He still got billed as a sicko BDSM'er.
Negative feedback regardless.

Yes, he was a boy scout leader to...I think someone was unsure.

When it comes to criminal cases I try to keep up as best as I can especially when it is involving us.

he's a sociopath, plain and simple, actually the furthest reach of sociopathy.

and I don't think he ever claims to have been in the actual BDSM community at all, he actually dissociates himself from his crimes, calling it an alter and such.

I'd hope the average person would understand the difference between a serial killer and kinks, then again bundy blamed his urges on escalative porn (they all blame something other than themself, of course)

If it makes you feel any better, think about all the negative publicity Vampire the Masquerade, Doom, and Marylyn Manson got from the Columbine shootings. Then think for a second - did anyone with half a brain ever think those were the real causes? Is anyone with half a brain even going to think about BDSM in any -other- light?

I may be splitting hairs here, but I have to take issue with this statement. The fact that Rader used rope to tie up his victims (and sometimes himself) does not mean that he was into BDSM. It just means he was a sad, impotant man that had to use guns and rope to scare little girls (one of his first victims was only 11) and other women he felt he could terrorize.

BDSM is safe, sane and consensual. What he did was so far from BDSM that there is really no comparison. Since I work at home, I have the news channels on often as back ground noise. I have not heard any one, not even CNN make a link between his crimes and BDSM. I was waiting for the comparrison but so far, this is the only place I have seen Radar and our lifestyle linked.

Doubtless there are those unimformed out there that will confuse what they have heard of our community and preditors like this with being the same. But let's not do that ourselves.

Well, if you follow the link that I provided, you'll see that CNN said that he posed his victim in "bondage positions" for photos, and spoke of having plans for one of his victims being his "Mistress" and another being his "slave" in the afterlife. Sounds kind of like associating what he was doing with BDSM to me, no? Also sounds like (from his descriptions of having a mistress and a slave in the afterlife) that he thought he was into BDSM, whether you think so or not.

Be that as it may, the average reader isn't going to understand (or care) that he didn't meet your definition of a BDSMer. To the uninformed outsider, any mention of bondage, mistresses, slaves, etc., is going to lump him into that general category "kinky pervert", right along with you and I. It adds to the public perception that those who do what we do must be perverted, and potentially, dangerous. That was the point of the post.

Try living in Wichita right now. My poor husband is worried because a lot of stuff that Rader did or talked about he himself has thought of in his own mind. He grew up as a kid with his sisters as teenagers not going out for fear. DH is also afraid people would consider him an animal like Rader for his twisted thoughts. Hell he has been questioning himself!

Rader was not ever in the local scene here, ever. He did pose victims and himself in bondage photos. He had drawings, scrapbooks. Tons of evidence was found at his work and in his closet at home. He said his afterlife would include the victims as his personal slaves, sexual included.

I don't believe that the general public knows as much as those of us living in the Wichita area. Our local tv stations interrupted all programs when in came to this subject. Because he had been around for decades it was felt the public should be included in every minute that his proceedings were on.

I'm just glad it is over and we can go on with our lives. Hopefully we will not encounter any lynching mobs out for people involved in BDSM. We have our hands full enough as it is with a mayor out to rid the city of all adult entertainment industries in town and a local preacher who feels that his evangelical theology should be involved in all forms of government.

I believe that everyone is sick and twisted... regardless of their religeous persuasion or lack thereof. The only exception to that... is me.
