I am looking to put some conveniently placed eyebolts on the walls but need a way to easily disguise them. The problem with normal eyebolts being they stick out too far if they are good heavy-duty types. What I would like to find is something like an eyebolt but where the 'ring' part hangs loose from the bolt and, when not in use, can lay flat, thus much easier to hide behind pictures and such.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm still googling and looking at everything from horse tie ups to marine hardware, haven't found anything yet.

Have you looked at HITCHED RINGS ?
check this link out - the rings are on a plate so it looks strong, but can lie flat against a wall...

You could install threaded inserts into the studs, and they can be easily covered with pictures or whatever chatchkes you might want to use. When you want to play, just screw an eyebolt into the threaded insert and off you go.
