DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A review is under way in the case of a Florida police officer who used a stun gun on a woman who had yelled at her.

Last month's incident began as Elizabeth Beeland, 35, tried to buy a CD player at an electronics store, and stepped outside to talk on her phone, leaving her credit card behind. A store clerk became suspicious, and suspected Beeland was using a stolen card. When police officer Claudia Wright approached, she said Beeland became "verbally profane" and "abusive."

Wright said she warned Beeland to calm down or face arrest. The officer hit Beeland in the stomach with the Taser darts and arrested her on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

I'm against the taser in general, and think it should only be used in cases serious enough that a gun would otherwise be pulled.

It's hard to judge this incident, I didn't see where the video was.

I’m not so sure about that. If the police ever had to take my ass down I think I’d prefer a quick jolt over having four or five cops beat me with batons. The use of a taser is prone to abuse, however, because it is considered non-lethal – and thus one might be tempted to "punish" with it rather than defend and/or subdue, which are it’s proper uses.

"Extrajudicial Torture". Plain and Simple. Punishment without Due Process for being "Disobedient".

The subtext being "She should be glad we didn't shoot her dead, and we just tortured her with the TASER".

Well, I suppose any weapon can be misused.  Cops aren't supposed to bludgeon people half to death with batons any more than they're supposed to taser someone without just cause.  I guess you're correct in that the fundamental problem isn't the taser in and of itself but rather the misuse of it.  It just seems that these taser stories come up left and right anymore.

Well, it's like so many other things....you only hear the BAD things that happen...you never hear about the guy that was taken down with a taser as he started to go after his 5 month pregnant girlfriend....or the multitudes that would have been shot had it not been for the use of tasers....there are good and bad in any profession.

Agreed.  However, the positive incidents of taser usage don't justify the misuse of them, or any other weapon for that matter.  Because someone's pregnant girlfriend was saved doesn't make it acceptable for someone else to be unjustly tasered.

There's a reason why only the "BAD" stories hit the news.  The positive stories that we never hear about should be the expected standard.  The negative stories on the other hand, are the ones that need examination.
