Found some really good sites on here for purchasing hides for leather projects, but does anyone know of places that use natural tanning processes? Ie- bark tanning, etc...sans chemicals. Would also be nice if they offered naturally-dyed leathers, too. I'm just starting to explore leather crafting and am interested in learning how to make leather toys - floggers and paddles, primarily. It's important to me, however, that the leather be as eco-friendly as possible. Any clues, hints, tips appreciated. Thanks.

MistressNoName, I'll check into some of my sources when I get home. Right now I'm using a friend's computer, as I don't have internet at the new house yet. If I can come up with anything usefull, I'll post it when I can.

Eco-friendly is a sound byte phrase and often a misnomer. Many companies supply 'eco-friendly' leather but this often just means that they follow EPA guidelines in the processes.

Veg Tan Leather - Any leather produced with a tannic acid bath made from vegetable matter, usually the bark of oak trees and water, is called veg dye leather. Of course, in today's tanning industry tanners can purchase vats of this tannic acid. It's not as if they go cut down a tree themselves (btw...tree loss) and skin the bark.

Even most veg tan leathers are finished with a process that involves finishing the skin. This is done by covering the grain surface with a chemical compound and then brushing it.

Mineral tanning takes a day or less and Chromium salt is generally the mineral of choice for mineral tanning. Vegetable tanned leather is extremely flexible, although it is extremely prone to water damage.Other means of tanning include boiling, tanning in aluminum salts and tanning in animal oils taken usually from the animal’s brain (brain tan)

Commercial tanneries in the USA must abide by strict EPA laws and environmental concerns are kept at bay. Unfortunatly many home tanneries slip under the rader and dispose of their waste products in ways that harm the environment. New laws and new processes are even being inacted in India and other countries where leather is a major export item.
