Okay - saw Jim Mogul using this awesome single tail in numerous episodes of The Training of O and the closest thing I've found to it is the "Simon Legree Slapper Whip" at Mr. S: http://www.mr-s-leather.com/W81.html I noticed that this one at Mr. S is not rigid up to the beginning of the tail like the one used by Jim. The tail style is somewhat unique - I think its called a dragon tail. It seems to offer a real range of sensations and I'm fascinated by it.

It looks to me like what he is using is essentually a riding crop with a dragon tail replacing the slapper.

That's what I was seeing - it seems like a braided leather crop with the slapper as you say - perhaps calling it a single tail is really way off the mark. I wonder how difficult a "surgery" it would be to take a crop and just cut a dragon tail and attach it. If anyone has seen one pre-made I appreciate you pointing me toward one. I'm trying to pick out my birthday present! As I give it more thought, I'm almost thinking the Simon Legree whip at Mr. S is the way to go because it will probably get some extra velocity from the single-tail like body it has and make it a potentially much stingier toy.

got some more information: It appears that there is a similar whip used by gauchos of South America: http://www.ecstagony.com/eng/info/artinst/gaucho.htm Also, Jim Mogul has been known to refer to the whip as a "tax whip" but I haven't turned anything up in searches using this term. I'm going to give the Simon Legree a shot as Madison Young, Jim's girlfriend, even mentioned it as a great choice if you like the one Jim uses - very similar feel.

This looks like Jim Patterson's work, he makes a wicked as hell singletail in a variety of sizes- the tail on the end is very abrasive. The 4' footer is a cool thing to throw; I didn't know there were little quirt ones. Google Patterson Singletail. I have a pair of 19th century dog whips- for big super fit kennels of hunting dogs for bear and bobcat mind you- that are very similar, except the body is shot loaded and one has two lashes. Great for beating girls with- I like being hit with them too. On Ebay there's a seller called NYLeather who sells these. I've seen them all over, just hadn't paid attention because I need other things first... The one he's using is not the meanest version they come in as far as I know. As for "tax whip", there are some unbeleivably good whip designs from back in the day, before we got enlightened and whips were for barbarians (snarfkle!) This for a riding crop for example, combines the horsehair whisk for brushing flies off and a bat for telling your mount it's time to go- quickly! Excellent idea. Whips did have more practical purposes, you know.

Found one of the gauco/rebenque whips on ebay. Actually were two of them I bought the shorter one.

That ecstagony website is super! except the most interesting things on it you can't hit people with. What a drag! I ordered a synthetic sjambork (sp?) though, just the thing for dogwalking. Or maybe I just wanted it and that's the excuse? That little whip could be put together with a nice stiffy fiberglass crop body- crops are a waste anyway, bats are the only thing worth using, even for actual horses- and a tongue from Tandy's. But I like to make stuff. And I really like weapons and whips.
