BiteGirl -> C/c/C/c/C/c/C/c/Capitals in regards to switches (1/1/2008 11:40:40 AM)

So something that I'm not overly interested in, as, it seems silly to me (but if it's your thing, I mean no offence). is the way that people talk in forums and chatrooms to each other, using capitals for dominants and lowercase for submissives.

I am curious, what would you do for a switch? would it be like Dom, sub, S/s/S/switch ?

I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, I'm just curious, as switching, in this essence, is outside of the rule, as far as I know.

I have no idea what the correct what the correct slashy rule is for switches, but I did fall off my chair giggling at your interpretation of it.

That's just another reason that the whole capitalization idea is foolish.

LOL. That's cool, I giggle at my idea's all the time too.

HBS - I think it's silly, but i'd still like to know how it works with switches. I get curious, over small things.

Thanks for the replys! :)

expedio1 -> RE: C/c/C/c/C/c/C/c/Capitals in regards to switches (1/1/2008 12:21:12 PM)

I originally used capitals for Myself and lower case for subs purely as a matter of clarification in other forums where the "type" labeling wasn't as explicit in the system as it is here.  I use the same username almost everywhere and, as you can see, it's not capitalized.  In many places, that in combination with the fact that I am a woman seems to be default code for "sub".  Therefore, I began capitalizing My pronouns and such in order to signal My preferences before the fact.

Since then, it's become simply a comfortable habit for Me, and I find that some subs also appreciate it as a symbol of our respective roles, so I use it all the time when in a bdsm-related environment or communication.  I do not, however, require subs to use it, not even the ones who have been directly submitted to Me.  For Me it's neither a written-in-stone rule nor something I need in order to "feel Dominant" or to assert Myself.  If I need capital letters in order to be Dominant, I'm doing something wrong.

Having given that explanation of My personal thinking on the matter, I'll then say that I normally use lower case for everyone other than Myself, whether Dom/me, sub, or switch, unless a Dom/me or switch is using capitals him/herself or asks Me to do so.  (In those cases, I happily and respectfully comply with the other party's wishes.)  I do that because I find that most people don't bother with capitalization and I don't want to label them in a way that they haven't chosen to label themselves.

As for the whole "slash" controversy with plural pronouns... oy!  Even I don't do that!  If others choose to do so, I certainly respect it, but for Me it's waaaaaaay too much trouble for something that's only very marginally meaningful to Me to begin with.

Raechard -> RE: C/c/C/c/C/c/C/c/Capitals in regards to switches (1/1/2008 12:37:24 PM)

I use capitals for all names and if I annoy anyone by using capitals, good. Using lowercase for your name or lowercase ‘I’ doesn’t make you submissive it only makes you bad at grammar. Sometimes I get caught up in that nonsense but no longer I say![:D]

expedio1 -> RE: C/c/C/c/C/c/C/c/Capitals in regards to switches (1/1/2008 12:46:59 PM)

Good point, Raechard.  I should clarify that in those situations where I don't know a person's preference, I use lower case for the personal pronouns and things like that, but capitals for things that are capitalized in normal English usage, such as names (except when I'm chatting because then I'm very quick and lazy and almost all the normal rules go out the window!).  Thank you for pointing out that distinction.

AMaster -> RE: C/c/C/c/C/c/C/c/Capitals in regards to switches (1/1/2008 1:30:00 PM)

I understand your point, but it makes life less difficult if DOM's use caps and subs use lower case.  More than once I have viewed the profile of someone I though was submissive only to find out she was a Domme.  I guess in the chat rooms a switch could use caps or not depending on how they felt at that particular time.

One more reason for my distaste for any type of slashy speak. I refuse to engage in it with anyone. I find it pretentious and annoying.

Good point I suppose except that I read many profiles not just those of the type of people I am seeking.

Having said that who is to say who should use capitals or not? The fact that you find yourself looking at Dominant profiles indicates that not everyone is obeying your system therefore it doesn’t work and your should find a new one.

Yeah. It's just a role. Some of the D/s mannerisoms are just so damn wanky, I suppose that's why I like switches so much, they don't seem to be too over the top about things like this.

Haha. I love how you think it's a good thing, to annoy other people.

The thought of someone showing how submissive they are to me by using lover case I's is strange, I suppose it's like when my dog roll's over and displays his belly, it's not really needed. Although the dog has a reason to do this.

I still don't know about switches and how we're suppose to be refered to. I shall continue to seek truth!

I've always found that whole uppercase/lowercase stuff pretty silly, people should stick to using halfway decent English, sticking random slashes or whatever in your words is not halfway decent English... Like in High School there was this one teacher that tried to tell us that it should be "he/she" instead of "they," (Something like, "When the person enters the room, they will first see.." kind of they)... Sure maybe it's plural instead of singular, but the slash in he/she (or she/he, or even a (s)he), is just plain awkward.... Anytime someone uses slashes like a T/they or whatever the crap people do it makes me want to say the word twice (in my head), and, yeah, is just kind of awkward....

Also, lowercase "I"s, is just wrong, 'I' by itself should always be capital.

I mean, it's bad enough when people online refuse to use any capitalization or punctuation, but, the whole slashyness is (again) just kind of silly.

That said, I am rather apathetic so it doesn't bother me too much, and I wouldn't tell someone to stop typing that way (At least, anyone I didn't know well, someone I did know well I might just say they didn't have to type that way when talking to me)... So, basically, fnord.

I've got a strange feeling going off on that tangent threw me off a little in writing this post, but, hey.

To be honest, I agree with the OP's comment that the caps rule is ridiculous. It makes me want to jump from dominant mode all the way over to snark and demand that the people involved stop mangling the language. We have the luxury of unlimited access. We no longer have to use shorthand. Take a few extra moments and actually use all the letters in a word. It's not that difficult. Then I have to go sit out on the porch in my rocking chair muttering "Hell in a handbasket... hell in a handbasket" over and over again until the fit subsides.

sweetwenchie -> RE: C/c/C/c/C/c/C/c/Capitals in regards to switches (1/2/2008 1:23:21 PM)

Is that actually a rule now???  Yikes, won't I (or is that "i" [8|]) be in trouble with the Caps police now?!?  What is the actual punishment for disobeying the all important Caps rules, and will I/i enjoy it?  [;)]

~~~edited to add... what if the whole lower case i thing has more to do with laziness than a disrespect for proper grammar, are there any loop holes in this law?~~~
Suleiman -> RE: C/c/C/c/C/c/C/c/Capitals in regards to switches (1/2/2008 1:28:59 PM)
Sweetie, I'm sure I could come up with something to help you remember the new rule. Perhaps you'd like to come over and attend my Internet Grammar Symposium?
Stephann -> RE: C/c/C/c/C/c/C/c/Capitals in regards to switches (1/2/2008 1:39:33 PM)
In my experience, a switch simply used the term the way they would use any noun; capitalized at the beginning of a sentance, and lower case elsewhere.
