I would like to see a  National DNA database and require samples as part of the birth certificate procedures…drivers license applications…. passports…. social security applications…tax refunds…incarceration and or convictions of any crime…. holding of public offices…public service jobs like fire and police and post office and utilities…Any alien entering the country for any reason.

Butch

I can see in theory, that might be a good idea but for a few points against. Here in Britain we do not trust our authorities and even less so now since they have been tardy with our personal information, private dna information, who says the same will not happen, and would that information be free of corruption?

A crime could be comitted by a person of influence and someone's dna could be made to fit that crime. The thought of this is horrendous, people totally innocent being charged and who would believe otherwise, as dna is so right and conclusive as we are led to believe.

I do see your points and very good ones…but DNA is just a tool a useful one. The abuse or use of the information is a whole different subject.

Just because the potential of abuse is there is not a reason to ignore a technology that could help exonerate the innocent and convict the guilty.

People are so well-behaved these days.  They don't even flip out anymore when I say things like this...

Bullshit.  They should have just executed the fucker when they had the chance, and then they never would have had to deal with this crap.  Exculpatory DNA evidence my ass.

I think it is just that they are generally happier than liberals.  There was a study.........

I would have commented quicker...but I had to find out what..."Exculpatory" meant.

Yea…maybe the guy did not ejaculate in her when he raped her… she may have just had sex before he raped her….. hell he was probably guilty of something else anyway….maybe he got a friend to spit on the swab or paid off the guy taking the sample…. Damn cops may have switched the evidence by mistake… we all make mistakes what’s the big deal anyway.

Life for rape??? but murderers get even as low as 1-5 years and some never see a day in prison??? makes no sense!!!!!

How many men(and woman) have been wrongfully ,put to death?

Makes no sense...

How come conservatives are seeking to limit DNA testing, even in death penalty cases.

Makes no sense...

How come conservatives and neo-conservatives,are seeking to limit the appeals process and speed up executions?

Makes no sense...

I'll be damned if I would voluntarily give a DNA sample to the government.  I really don't understand theis wilingness to give away information to the authorities.  They already collect DNA from convicted felons in most states.  I have no problem with that.  But I have committed no crimes, and I would refuse to give away personal information like that to get a driver's license, a job, or anything else.  Why don't you just allow them to put cameras in your house while you're at it?

I would repeat the mantra from the right, that if you haven`t done anything wrong, you needn`t worry about the government spying on you(and us),or looking at emails (and posts on CM<wink>),checking our bank records and mail,or collecting information on citizens.

I mean, privacy rights are sooo, .... pre-9/11.

Right?

Apparently you have never been raped.

Rape leaves a liiving victim who is oftentimes a shell of who they once were. They usually relive the trauma over and over, and it has a lasting effect on all of their personal relationships.

Some might say that it is worse than murder. You might have a look at the suicide rates of rape victims, many of whom prefer death to living with what they have been through.

Yes, I agree it is ridiculous some of the sentences that people get for murder. But at least the murder victim does not have to face what happened to them over and over.

It is great news that this man wrongfully convicted (Nothing about it in the fox article, but anyone want to bet that the accused was black and victim white), while the Democrats ran the place, is finally being set free.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Wrongully convicted man cleared of rape after 26 years in prison (1/4/2008 12:06:51 PM)

And not such great news that he couldn't have been freed while Bush was still governor.

Keep also in mind the other side of this error....the actual rapist was never caught.

luckydog1 -> RE: Wrongully convicted man cleared of rape after 26 years in prison (1/4/2008 12:19:01 PM)

LAM according to the article he did not ask for the test to be done untill 2004.  Why exactly did Gov Richards keep him in jail?  Since you want to take it to that level.  People don't really pretend Republicans are scouring the jails looking for the innoccent to set free.  Democrats do pretend they care about these people.  So I was pointing out that this defies the popular sterotype.

mnottertail -> RE: Wrongully convicted man cleared of rape after 26 years in prison (1/4/2008 12:22:02 PM)

Well, why didn't Clements figure it out?  He had two terms.........

Why would anyone look for a rapist once the white chick pointed out her assailant under oath in a court room? (Have no idea whether the woman who was raped was white. I read several articles but this fact seemed to always be omitted...It's simply "funner" to assume that the chick was white)

luckydog1 -> RE: Wrongully convicted man cleared of rape after 26 years in prison (1/4/2008 12:38:57 PM)

Mnot, in my opinion, this defies the normal streotype, so I commented on it.  I enjoy doing that.  You left wingers are so funny when one of your stereotypes get violated by facts, several of y'all usually leap in to try to attack my comments (often with strawmen arguments, trying to change the subject, and personal attacks), and it the lenghts you go to is amusing to me.

I didn't want to get into individuals, so I commented on Parties.  If you want to do individual Govenors on this issue, explain to me why Richards kept him in jail, and we can proceed.  But if you put a little bit of forward thinking to it, you will end up arguing that the Democrats are just the same as the Republicans.  Republicans don't pretend they care about these individuals ( we argue that good policy will help everyone including them).  Democrats do pretend they care about these individuals, yet do the facts here support the claim, I think not.
