I took a nap kind of over slept woke up with a killer headache I took exedrin but the pain only begins to feel better if I sit strait up and begins to scream worse when I lay back down again. Why is it doing this? it sucks I want to lay down and it just makes the pain worse.

I get migraines, so I empathize. The only thing that works for me is Imitrex tablets and a cold compress. Lying down is better for me, not sure why sitting up is better.

Have you tried Imitrex? Excedrin Migraine does not really work for serious migraines, at least it did not for me.

Also, I take 25 mg. of Topomax before bed and that reduced my migraines by about 90%, I am not kidding you.

This is typical for my headaches. If I go to sleep with a mild headache I will wake up with a killer headache.
Do you have any meds other than Excedrin?
Could be sinus-induced. Try Tylenol Sinus or some Sudafed and Tylenol together (same thing). If you have Imitrex or anything else Rx now would be the time to bust that out.
If you really want to lay down, pack your head in ice (Ice pack to the forehead and one to the occiput). This helps me. But I would not lay down and go to sleep unless you have taken something else for the pain, otherwise you are just going to wake up with a terrible headache again.

In general, there is a slight possibility that a headache that comes on after laying down is caused by increased Intracranial Pressure (due to any number of causes including increased CSF production and cerebral hemorrhage) but that would be the worst headache of your life. Those of us who suffer migraines know how bad that would have to be.

Can you prop yourself up on a lot of pillows and try to rest that way?

Do you get migraines usually?  Are you kinked (pardon the pun) up?
If you have contacts in, take them out.  Brush your teeth (i'm not kidding.. the mintiness can help alot)..  Do you know how to stretch your neck and back muscles?  If you don't have any Rx migraine meds, do you have a benedryl or any PM type medications with benedryl in them?

I suffer from some horrible migraines and I kids you not but some of these things truly help me...

I used to take Excedrin until my doctor told me it's one of the worst things you can take for migraines. Sitting up in a recliner in a dark quiet room with a cold cloth over my eyes always helped me. Also, if you usually take one type of pain pill, you might try switching to something else. If you normally take ibuprofen, switch to tylenol, etc.

I used to get horrid migrains with no relieve in site like every week and even then the dr wouldn't proscribe me imitrex, and believe me I asked. his solution was codien 3 which I had said over and over was useless and didn't even touch the pain. exedrin suprisingly is the ONLY OTC that helps for headaches when one comes on, Tylenol and motrin and aleeve and advil and any of those others never even becan touching the pain.  What's topomax?

Used to get sever headaches a lot, not much any more unless I've kinked the neck by laying with my neck at odd angles propped up, IE laying on my side in front of the pc with the pillows bunched up to much, for to long. I do feel a tiny tight in the neck, I was rotating the neck side to side a bit was going to go outside and do some crafting but I just looked at the jumble and decided I wasn't up to it lol.

We have benedryl but I can only take one tablet or it makes me feel super sick, like ran over backed up ran me over again migrain sleepyness foggyness lethargy crankyness. It was a real bitch when I had my alergic out break for an entire month lol.

Heather I'm not trying to sleep since I just woke up about an hour ago from a nap, but siting up unsupported in bed or having to go sit in the livingroom isn't the most comfiest lol. when I am ready to try laying down again I'll try proping up with pillows, or just go sit on the couch in the living room.

I have gotten migraines from oversleeping or overnapping.

Excedrine can work but if you use it often the caffeine can give you rebound headaches.

i have had headaches that have gotten worse when i lay down.

feel better...

When you lie down, try lying on your back with a tightly rolled up towel under your neck. The towel will stop you crunching the neck muscles to try to keep your head straight, and will increase bloodflow to the brain and neck muscles.

I have suffered from migraines and sinus headaches since i was aged 4 or 5. Excedrin didn't work for me in fact it made my heart go nuts and i was hyper from it. I refuse to touch it. Try and find a headache clinic and go and see them for tests etc. I did. I get both headaches at the same time. I was on a great medicine (forgot the name), it worked like a charm but since i have asthma they had to take me off of the drug. I am on something else and it doesn't work as well. Yes, i have tried the meds that have been listed above by others ^^  . You get a migraine for many reasons, too much sleep, too little sleep, overeating, undereating, change in temperature, changes within your body, humidity, food, stress. There are a million reasons. Make a diary and try and figure out what is setting your headaches off. For sinus: get a neti pot and use warm water and salt mixture and use the neti pot every day for your sinuses. Stay away from caffeine (Excedrine and Mountain Dew have vast amounts), you maybe getting relief from them but it's the caffeine and Drs. say to stay away from it. You can also get bounce back headaches from too muc medicine. Go to a headache clinic..
Good luck!

First of all, if you have been diagnosed with migraines and your doctor refuses to give you Imitrex or any of the prescribed migraine meds, get a new doctor. I went to a neurologist who specializes in migraines. I used to get internists who gave me codeine and every other pain killer which are useless and addicting.

Imitirex does not prevent the migraine, it stops it within 30 minutes. You can even get the injectible kind which stops the migraine in 10 minutes, but I am too big of a baby to inject myself.

Topomax is another drug that is contraindicated for other types of use, epilepsy, etc. During clinical trials it was discovered that it also helped people with migraines and weight loss.

The FDA has approved it for migraine use. It can make you very dopey if you take too much of it and if you take it during the day, so you need to experiment. I find that taking it before bed and a very low dose simply prevents the migraines, like I said, cut them by 90%.

It is worth a try, but get a better doctor who understands migraines, not all general practioners do.

I do feel for you. Migraines are one of the very few things in this world that scare me. The memory never leaves you once you've had one.

If it's superbad and nothing is working, (and yes, I'm in Australia so I don't know if you can do it in the US) you may need a pethidine jab. Sometimes nothing else will work.

I need a new gp anyway since the one I was seeing *who was quite good which makes his quitting suck* quit when I call to ask for a new one I'll request one who specialized in  migrain treatment and back pain.

Do you have any history of Blood Pressure issues?
Low BP can result in  migrains. High BP can result in migrains.
Lowering in Blood Pressure is a common thing when people lay down. Also, people can have a blood rush to the head when they lay down.

Thinking this might be a Blood Pressure or Blood Flow ordeal is just an idea. I suggest that you see a Nurologist. Imitrex is the newest medication for severe migraines brought on by blood flow/blood pressure issues.

Without knowing all the details or your daily routine and diet, I can only conclude that something has changed with your blood flow/pressure. That's why I suggest that you see a nurologist. I'm sure you'll find out what going on pretty darn quick.

Nope. My blood pressure has always been perfect, according to the dr. These headaches are all after sleeping for more than 2 hours* not all the time but this one is right after a nap*

or having my neck crunched up at wrong angle for to long.* in which case rolling over and having the neck at the other angel usualy helps * Crying can cause sever headaches too but no tears for me today.

Keeping mostly upright has helped a lot it's gone from ouch oh my god who's ice picking my head to  minor discomfort.

Another pain reliever is Relpax. Doesn't always work...for the most part it does.
I've gotten immune to Imatrix..doesn't do a thing for me.
I've had migraines for 36 yrs. They suck..and not well.
I get different kinds also, as another poster mentioned.

I also take Topomax..I was simply amazed at the reduced frequency of the migraines! Unless something better comes out, I'll never be without Topomax.

Try sucking on a piece of ginger...bout the size of your thumbnail. My son told me about that..brought me some one time. It did ease the pain..I could still feel the "band"..but the pain had eased a bit. Plus..the ginger also helped with the nauseating feeling.
