What does a pinched nerve feel like?  I've got a constant pain that shoots from my arm up to the base of my head, and it's driving me crazy!  No position will relieve the pain, and medicated pads and pain meds aren't doing the trick.  I've got an appointment for a massage tomorrow.!  Dang, I sound like a cry baby.. but honestly, it's almost bad enough to make me cry.  BTW, my family doctor is not worth the visit, as it would just piss me off to hear, "take muscle relaxer" blah blah blah... which I have been taking also.

Any suggestions on how to relieve this pain will be greatly appreciated!

Youre welcome, and good luck!

sub4hire -> RE: OUCH! (1/8/2008 11:51:56 AM)

A pinched nerve feels like what you are describing.  Go to your family MD, tell him  you've been taking the muscle relaxers and they aren't working.
Next step is probably an MRI

Aileen1968 -> RE: OUCH! (1/8/2008 12:00:17 PM)

Sounds like a herniated disc in your neck.
Got to your doctor and get it cheked out.

proudsub -> RE: OUCH! (1/8/2008 1:41:40 PM)

This is probably unlikely in your case, but arm and shoulder pain can also be a symptom of a heart attack in women, so it might be worth checking out.

girlygurl -> RE: OUCH! (1/8/2008 3:27:29 PM)

Thanks for your input all!  A heart attack!  ummmm this pain has been going on for three days... am I dead? [8D]  Thank you for the thoughts proudsub.  Herniated disk!  please!  [:)] I don't have time for that Aileen.  But seriously, if the massage doesn't help relieve some pain I will go see my family doctor thank you sub4hire... jeesh, at 45 I'm all of a sudden feeling like I'm falling a part.

Oh, I'm also curious if stress doesn't have something to do with this, or adding to it anyway.  Classes have started back up and anyone that knows me will tell you I HATE ALGEBRA!!!![:'(]  So.... I do wonder if I'm stressing myself out and creating this pain myself by stressing too much??  Is that possible?

I had a similar thing happen a while back - are you by any chance on the computer a lot or do you send text messages a lot, etc?  I was getting shooting pains from my wrist to my elbow to my shoulder to my neck (but not constantly, just off and on)- I talked to my friend/professional massage therapist & he said I may have had a slipped disc in my neck, but also that my arm muscles were going into atrophy/getting stringy!  He had me get some weights (er, you only need to buy one reall) - I started at a 6lb one - and held my forearm at a 90 degree angle from my body & did really slow curls up & down every day (just however many until my arm got sore).  It started getting better really soon, and I moved up to 12lb weights.  Now I do this a few days a week and all the pain is gone!
I wouldn't say you should just start doing this though - if you really pinched something, it could do more harm than good - but you might want to bring up the possibility of your muscles being weak...???

Sounds like a herniated disk all right. I did that to myself this summer..OMG the pain.
The good news - it gets better.
The bad news - it can take up to a couple months to do so.
I feel for you, girly.

I can't help you on the pain, although I'm looking to go to med school... but for cardiology.

I however, am an expert at math so if you ever need help, feel free to ask.

Me too.  That's why I cringed when she described the pain.  Been there.  Done that and hopefully never again.

girlygurl -> RE: OUCH! (1/9/2008 10:20:05 PM)

Ok, you two!  the disk thing scares the heck out of me... dang, Aileen, you nailed that right away.  i've been doing a bit better and had a massage today mmmmmmm the massage was wonderful.  [:D]

Math! Did someone mention math???? ummm ok, my pain is back and it's wayyyyyyy worse now!  [;)]  thanks for the offer, but unless you're able to sit next to me and actully walk me through step by step on the math.... you would scream after sitting with me for an hour.   My major in school has nothing to do with math whyyyyyy oh why am i required to take that crap!! [:'(] (I know why, but yuck!)

I do appreciate everyones thoughts and well wishes, thank you!

MissA -> RE: OUCH! (1/10/2008 1:29:39 AM)

girly, if the pain is shooting to your jaw area please do not wait. Women often experience this type of pain with a heart attack and may ignore it since it is not what is considered "typical." I'd rather see someone in the ER with a pinched nerve than have someone collapse at home with a heart attack.

I hate to be the one to break the news but...when you do the MRI that is exactly what they will be looking for.  A bulging disk could press on a nerve...etc.

pamela700 -> RE: OUCH! (1/19/2008 9:54:02 AM)

hey there.
i have now 7 severely herniated neck discs. my arms and hands are usually numb and tingly to some degree (it varies), can also have extremely sharp stabbing pains.

some of it, for me, is also caused by knot-like muscle tension called trigger points, in my shoulders. it is often made worse by vaccuuming, pushing a grocery cart, having my purse/backpack too heavy (or some days, on at all), some bras make it worse too.

massage and heat should help, but if it doesn't go away after a few weeks, i'd see your doctor. you'll need an MRI to diagnose if it is a disc problem.

if it turns out you have/develop one, feel free to message me. it totally sucks, but after 8 years i've learned all sorts of tricks as to how to live with it. i have too many in a row to have surgery to fuse or replace mine (if you have 1 or 2 bad discs, they can now replace them even in your neck).

---pam, neck/arm/hand pain expert, ugh!
