Is something considered sterile if it contains endotoxins? I thought no endotoxin was a foregone conclusion when something which one intended for injection into the body was called sterile. M

That is a superb question. Unfortunately, sterility simply means that there are no viable (living) organisms. In other words, a culture of the saline would not yield bacterial growth.

The saline, however, likely contained bacteria at one time. The method that was used to kill the bacteria did so successfully, but during the process of bacterial death there is the release of endotoxin into the fluid. This is not destroyed by heating. Thus, unless saline is both sterile and endotoxin-free, it would not be used medically for intravenous infusion.

Well thanks, that I didn't know, and would have always taken for granted (though I don't do any play involving needles/injections). M

Actually, "sterile" means having no live things in it. A solution of 20% of a cyanide could be "sterile." Deadly, but sterile.

Seriously, doms should be willing to experiment on their own bodies if only so they know the intensity of what they are doing. It also really does help the trust issue.

I like your thinking John Warren. I myself belive that a Dom shouldn't dish out what he/she can't take. I've tested many thing out before puting it to use to subs. Ropes, whips, floggers, chains, zappers, clamps, paddles, needles, and more. After all, though I'm not a sub or switch, I do have massochistic tendencies. If I cant take the pain, then I wouldn't expect my sub to either.

*smiling sweetly*

I get into so much trouble reading in the Health and Safety boards.....*sigh*

I am a practicing Registered Nurse and here on my opinions on saline injections.

1. Know what's involved. Not just from an internet forum. But read and understand everything from several different sources: ie. people who've done it, books on medical practices, etc.

2. Make sure your partner knows what's involved and has practiced, practiced, practiced, practiced. Sterile technique is not as easy as it seems. Did you know that in true sterile technique if you so even as much as reach over the field before scrubbing, gowning and gloving up; or turn your back on your tray it is now considered unsterile?

3. BIG HUGE POINT.......there is a very distinct and important difference between "sterile saline" and INJECTABLE saline. Know the difference. Make sure your partner knows the difference. An error as simple as this could mean your life.

Ok...off my soapbox....

sowie for stepping on anyone's toes

Hello All,
One of my extreme dungeon friends used saline injections on his slave. He shot each pussy lip with three ounces of saline solution from a bag like they'd give you in an IV in a hospital. After that he put three huge ben wah balls in her, then he stapled her shut and made her get up and go home that way. Before the scene I was talking to her. She's a registered nurse. I ask her if it was safe. She assured me it was safe as long as sterile needle practices were observed and that you don't use too much. She said it took her about two days for the extra fluid to be absorbed in her body. She went as far as saying she loved to have her clit filled with the solution and then have someone go down on her. She said it's the best head she ever had as the fullness adds to her sensitivity.
After her conversation I am very interested in this type of play. I even already have the bag of saline solution. I just haven't got the guts yet.
Sincerely,
sub suzanne

Plantlady,

I was wondering if you have had the guts to try it yet? And if so what it was like?

One thing that can be done for extra safety is to buy your needles and syringes sterile and prepacked together, so as to make contamination of the needle/syringe less likely (although if you need this kind of protection you're probably not on-the-ball enough to be inflating people's appendages with saline).

And getting your saline knowing it's intended for internal use from medical suppliers instead of getting it from dubious online fetish outlets is a good thing.
