ORIGINAL: LaTigresse What the heck is it and what is it in?? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenylalanine It's an amino acid, but beyond that my chemistry/biology are light enough that I don't really follow its use. For dietary reasons, it's mainly an issue among products with artificial sweeteners, I think mainly aspartame. Aspartame, incidentally, is a chemical you should avoid like crazy. For a personal example, at one point I started drinking more diet soda to try and cut down on some useless calories and quickly deteriorated. Was hungry and lethargic all the time and it capped off with a splitting headache that didn't stop and continued for an entire weekend straight. I stopped drinking the diet soda and after 3-4 days started feeling like a million bucks. Aspartame breaks down into phenylalanine, as well as other such fun chemicals as methanol (wood alcohol, you know the kind you shouldn't drink) and formaldehyde. It's amazing what we put in our bodies.
