Two words: Brain tumor

I've had migraines all of my life, but several years ago they took a turn for the worse with increasing frequency and intensity. Turns out that I had a brain tumor in addition to the migraines. The short version of the story is that the tumor was removed with no complications and my migraines have returned to their pre-tumor frequency and intensity.

Any change in the frequency or intensity of your headaches that lasts longer than a single episode needs to be checked out by a doctor. It might be simply that the stresses in your life are causing the changes, but it might be something even more serious.

i used to get migraines 4-6x a month, most likely as a result of having 7 severely screwed up cervical spine discs, which also affects my shoulders/arms/hands. ugh. so i'm absolutely a member of this club.

i have found i'm most senstivite to barometric pressure changes (going way up or down quickly SUCKS!), and then after the weather changes, i'm better almost immediately. i've had ER visits, chronic pain clinic/specialists and all sorts of other things.

one of the SIMPLEST, that worked wonders, was accupuncture on that fleshy part of my hand between thumb and forefinger. i had a really excellent accupuncturist, and i swear i went in to him in full-blown aura with nausea and muscle throbbing in my neck/shoulder (he could see it jumping) and 10 minutes of accupuncture, accompanied with some needle twisting at that specific point in my hand, and it was GONE.

i've since learned where that point, and others on the top of my forearm, are...and can usually now avoid the worst of symptoms by doing accupressure myself at home. i sometimes need other people to do it for me (since one of my problems is hand strength, when i'm feeling awful i sometimes can't maintain a strong enough pressure on the point for 1-2 minutes myself).

you should definitely consider both accupuncture, and accupressure. there are plenty of online resources as to where the spots are, just don't give up - give yourself the full time suggested to begin to feel results.

also, has anyone else seen the dentists who are treating migraine now with ice/cold to the back of the mouth? (i saw it on a local abc news program a few years ago).

good luck with finding your own migraine fixes, and don't stop searching until you find some relief - it's out there!

i have had a migraine for 30 days straight. Bounce back headache i am sure. I sure don't want to repeat that one again!
I have tried a lot of meds. One worked really well but it was taken away from me (cries) as i have asthma. Tried imitrex, nasty tasting pill that goes under the tongue (forgot the name of it), etc.
I want my old pills back!
This runs in my family.. My sister is lucky she only gets one a year, maybe two...GRRR... lucky.. It's bad enough having these. Please! Please! i want to revoke my membership to this pain club of hell!

The OP might want to ask her GP about 'anti-seizure' medications.  I have had over 20 migraine so far this month and my neurologist put me on "Depakote" and has changed how I eat - every 3 or 4 hours, plus a high protein, low carb, low fat diet; plus, I have to gain about 10lbs of muscle; that's the fun stuff.

Get to a neurologist or a Headache/Migraine Specialist which are in some areas. Be proactive in yuor medical care; I have and so far, things are better, it's wait and see. Be aggressive in your treatments and ask for alternatives.

SR mentioned Topomax, and if it works for ya red, far out!  I've used it in the past and so did one of my friends.  We had the same side effects from it.... never, I say never again.  My brain was in a complete fog.

girly, yes, the Topomax can make you dopey, so what works for me is to take the smallest possible dose, .25 milligrams at NIGHT before bed. Perfect. You can sleep, prevent the migraines and not be in a fog.

Kalista07 -> RE: lingering.....Migraine?? (1/25/2008 1:13:21 PM)

Okay, so i went to the doctor...She asked me what i had been on before that worked and i told her....So, she said she's write me a prescription for that.......Then i asked the magical question, is it expensive (because i'm still without insurance) and she said, "uhm...let's try this other one first".....Which, btw, only appears to work as a shield from allowing it to become a full blown migraine........

Last night i didn't sleep at all...By about 5:45 i was dying from pain....at 6am i found my migraine meds and called Him and whined to Him for a minute (Yeah, i'm a whiner...What of it? :P)  i fell asleep for about five hours and my head felt like it was getting better....Until now....Now i truley want to cut my head off......Am going to go lay down now....

I've been suffering with migraines for about 10 years.  My #1 trigger is stress, but I also find changes in weather really affect Me too.

Since I can't afford a visit to the ER for an IV and a shot of Imitrex in the arm...every time I get a migraine, the only thing that really works for Me is lavender oil applied to the temples and sleep --- no sound, no light, no movement.  OTC/prescription drugs taken orally simply don't work for Me.

Hoping you feel better soon...

Bergamot oil helps me at times,  sometimes caffeine or benedryl has been known to work in a pinch.  Lots of ice packs.

I do Topamax/Trileptal combo as a daily preventative, and keep a supply of Phenergan (anti-nausea) meds with me at all times.  I use Imitrex nasal at the beginning, then use whatever opiates I have on hand to avoid an ER visit.  I try to stay hydrated, as most headaches are caused by dehydration.

Sinus sufferer here.

The things you pour the salt water up your nose is commonly referred to as a nasal irrigator or a neti(sp) pot. I can't stand it so I have a small steamer with a hood into which you stick your nose and mouth. Breathing steam for 15 minutes is very helpful for sinus. The other thing for sinus sufferers is to get a scrip for Nasonex and use it faithfully, 2 sprays in each nostril once a day. I use it at night.

Forgot it the last couple of days, now my ear is bothering me and can only breathe out of one side. Keeping on top of the sinus problems is essential.

I've tried Nasonex and I had a terrible sore throat the next day.  I can't use it.

Where did you find the hood for directing steam to your mouth and nose?  I've never seen anything like that.

Mistress Scarlet

It's a little tiny steamer. Described it to the druggist and they pulled one out from a shelf. The plastic hood has about a 4" opening. Like putting a towel over your head while breathing in steam from a bowl except the steam continues for longer.

A couple of people asked about the personal steam inhaler. Here's the one I'm using.

slaverosebeauty -> RE: lingering.....Migraine?? (2/2/2008 8:48:16 PM)

A girl friend suggested 'Xango Juice' she said you drink it like a shot once a day and build up from there.  It's suppose to work, I haven't tried it; but so far, the new med, the sinus medication and the new diet and kick-boxing have helped me tremendiously {ok sex a few times as well}, no migraines in over 10days {knocks on wood}. Thats a new record.

The thing about migraiens, is it's trial and error, unfortunatly. What may work for one, doesn't mean it will work for another.  I bough that 'head on' for migraines, it works to a point, it gets me home to bed so I can semi-function.

imber -> RE: lingering.....Migraine?? (2/4/2008 11:06:51 AM)

yes i have had that happen to me before, i get them all the time. Usually a trip to the E.R. does the trick, they give me a shot of demoral and compozine and it is gone. but then again i have super high blood pressure and i have to do that. or i will stroke out on them :(
