Chantix (Varenicline)

Audience: Healthcare professionals, consumers
[Posted 11/20/2007] FDA informed healthcare professionals of reports of suicidal thoughts and aggressive and erratic behavior in patient who have taken Chantix, a smoking cessation product. There are also reports of patients experiencing drowsiness that affected their ability to drive or operate machinery. FDA is currently reviewing these cases, along with other recent reports. A preliminary assessment reveals that many of the cases reflect new-onset of depressed mood, suicidal ideation, and changes in emotion and behavior within days to weeks of initiating Chantix treatment. The role of Chantix in these cases is not clear because smoking cessation, with or without treatment, is associated with nicotine withdrawal symptoms and has also been associated with the exacerbation of underlying psychiatric illness. However, not all patients described in the cases had preexisting psychiatric illness and not all had discontinued smoking.

Healthcare professionals should monitor patients taking Chantix for behavior and mood changes. Patients taking this product should report behavior or mood changes to their doctor and use caution when driving or operating machinery until they know how quitting smoking with Chantix may affect them.

My mom and I both were taking Chantix to quit smoking. We both had to quit after about 3 weeks due to different negative reactions. The company that makes Chantix are voluntarily putting new warnings on the boxes. There is more research taking place. Be careful, y'all.

anti smoking aids are basicly anti-depressents. all anti-depressents come with a warning about suicide, and most with a warning about drowsiness. I had 2 and 2 added together some time ago and knew this was possible...

There is more to the story. I put this up because it was on the national evening news. So...you can add...cool. Not everybody watches the news or reads the back of the box.

those that do not read the back of the box of medication that they are about to subject their bodies too are asking for what is coming to them.

I was not trying to be snappy (and after reading the post agin it does read that way) I guess the point I was trying to make is that people need to take respocibilities and understand what they are taking. I have never been a smoker, but I know someone that the doctor put on anti depressiants to help her quit, and I have been on antidepressents, and the doctor drove the suicide point in.

Chantix is NOT an anti-depressant.

Chantix contains no nicotine, but it targets the same receptors that nicotine does. Chantix is believed to block nicotine from these receptors. It is the only prescription treatment of its kind.

this slave was unable to quit smoking with Chantix, however, it did help her to sleep, and changed her dreaming...but not to nightmares.

it contributed to her nausea issues and was discontinued.

I did the whole 3 month regimen. It worked for me, but my stomach did feel a bit unsettled at times. A few days after I stopped taking it, I dropped into a depression funk that lasted about a week. No fun. I've been off the butts for four months now, so I'm glad I did it. I kindasorta had to.

I have been on it for almost 70 days. It didn't bother my stomach as far as pain but did cause some digestive issues. The main issue I have with it is insomnia and the weirdest dreams. I had already had some of these problems but it has intensified it to new levels. However, I am only 3 weeks away from 3 months then I will stop using it and hopefully continue to be cigarette free.

I didn't start smoking until I was about 38 years old (45 now).  I've tried pretty much every method I could think of to stop.  I've been successful a few times, but it never lasted more than 6 months.  Last January I started working out and for 13 months I've managed to keep at it. I wanted to take the 'health kick' a bit further and recently--a few weeks ago---I began taking this drug. So far, so good.  Today, for example, I've had only 3 cigarettes. I've yet to experience any drowsiness or moodiness (hard to tell cuz I'm also peri-menopausal) or stomach issues---but yes, the dreams are vivid and wild!
