Oh my word, thank you to the OP for posting this. I laughed so hard, my mouthful of pepsi ended up all over the cat in an effort to avoid soaking my keyboard in warm, sticky fluid. :P

THAT being said, while I haven't had my period in almost two years now (Thank the Mirena IUD!), when I did get it, it was by no means "A Happy Period". In fact, I would have been able to claim temporary insanity due to hormonal imbalance for homicide. Considering two that I bled like a stuck pig for seven days straight every 28 days, those "flex-wings" and aerodynamic "sanitary napkins" did but two things for me: Jack, and shit. I cannot tell you how many pairs of underwear were ruined per month, and how many times I would swipe a package of the post-partum "immediately after delivery" pads that stretch from the back of your arse to your navel from the Labour and Delivery Unit I worked on. Unless it was classified as a "Whale Flipper" I had no interest in wearing it.
"Happy Period" my left fucking foot.

Sweet Baby Jesus in an underwater basket.

I would not want to be around Mistress if She opens a maxi and reads that.  She loves sharp things and knows how to use them!   I'm to young (and cute) to die!!!  I wanna live!!!

Maybe, as already mentioned, it refers to the period spent on pain and happy pills.  Or
Maybe they are talking about the period you aren't PMSing or bleeding.

I was speaking to my friend the other day and she asked why I was so cranky.  I told her that I was either starting my period, or I truely was a total b#%&h.

It's official.  I am a b#%&h!

LOL!  As I happily skate through perimenopause, I am SO GLAD that the horror is nearly behind me!  Thank goodness, the truly mindbending pain was over 20 years or so ago, though hey!  the joy of endometriosis remains.

WHY can we not just have voluntary uterine-only hysterectomies?  Keep the useful hormones, leave the annoying bits behind.  I am not a breeder!  Why the decades of bleeding for naught?

There is a very good reason the native american have their women go off to another 'women' lodge during that time.   Facing wild animals, fighting enemy... okay.  Keeping the women around during their moon time?  I don't think so!

Oh come on, just because during their moon time most women suddenly start projectile vomiting pea green soup, spinning their heads and wishing they could kill anyone who pisses them off, they get pushed off to a segrated lodge???  COWARDS

I so loved the letter and the rant.  So true and so hilarious.

I started my periods when I was 13/14 and I would honestly have them for 14 days way heavy.  I don't remember any regularly horrible cramps (I've been blessed) but I do remember the constant worry of bleeding on things like the second rant said, the diaper wearing and the extreme PMSing.  I never felt homicidal, just unbelievably crazed and out of control.  Now I don't have regular periods which I'm happy about right now (of course) but it will probably end badly.  Eh.

Exactly what I've been asking ever since my last child was born!  This baby factory is closed.  Bring on the menopause!!

LOL....it was the sentiment that cracked me up.  There are two ways to perhaps look at being sent away during "that time".......as a cowardly act by men who fear for their lives if their women were allowed to occupy the same teepee they did, or as a kind of mini-vacation.  Women back then obviously had none of the luxuries of today and worked extremely hard from sunup to sundown.  I'm sure some of those women might have been thankful for the time off from backbreaking labor during a time when they felt so bad.  I read somewhere once that Native Americans believed that women possessed a certain power during their moon time that might interfere with a warrior's ability to stay safe during battle.  I wonder where an idea like that came from.

It is akin to never trust anything that bleeds for 7 days and does not die... LOL

I love that saying!

Actualy a womans energy and power is so strong at that time it would over rule any one elses ( ie the warriors or males) and he would not be able to work any of his magic, or anything spiritual. ( calling on his totem animals to protect him in the hunt ) So off we went to mentrate on bits of moss in our womens Moon Lodge bitch about the men... be sisters.. sing, do arts and crafts... and be left alone.

I would love it if as women we could get a week off from work ( paid ) a month if we have medicaly proven awful moon times. Or at least a day or two...

Gwyn

One of the reasons I enjoyed breast feeding, because no periods! But all good things much come to an end. And being on Depo (for me) was just as bad as having a period! I was still moody, kinda bloated (and gaining weight), but now I had a random ass period to contend with! I got so bad a doctor (male of course, he also didn't believe in birth control) actually told another female doctor he thought I was a manic depressive/Bi-Polar. She gave him such a "are you fucking stupid" look that I started laughing, which didn't help my case in his eyes.

That would be fantastic!  I definitely think Native Americans were on to something with that
