I must have missed this being argued here:

At least he has an eco friendly home.

AIUI he built it to save on having to have water trucked in and to save money on his cooling bill. Highly valid reasons but it should be noted that this is the Bush vacation home and has never been their full time residence. Apparently the Bush's do not intend to live on the ranch after leaving the White House. They are apparently looking into homes in Highland Park outside of Dallas. I'm pretty sure that unless they tear down and rebuild that residence will not be quite so green.

Whatever the reason, it just seems odd that the President that is for the oil companies has a vastly more Green friendly home than the person who won a Nobel prize for their efforts in bringing attention to climate change and such. I remember hearing something about this, but never really looked into it. I would think with Gore's money that he would have solar power, geo therm heating and cooling, and all sorts of energy saving things in his home.

What might not be discussed about Gore's house, is what he does with it.

Many people have odd working lives.  If he's using his house as a pseudo corporate hub, and has a dozen assistants, editors, computer gurus, etc running in and out, there's a good chance that could account for why it uses so much energy.

I'm not saying that's the reason, I'm only pointing out that context is vital here.

To be fair to Gore, and I'm hardly one to be fair with him...  He's started to become signifigantly less hypocritical since he's been called out publically on his house.  While it's true that he -does-(from what I've read) use his home as sort of a center of operations, it was still a great deal over-the-top...  However, he's been doing more to change that, such as getting solar panels and such.

Of course, he spends outrageous amounts of energy in other areas too(Private jet), but he can hide behind the, "I'm helping spread the word, so I don't count" logic all day long.

I'm not sure if I can buy that or not, honestly.  But hey, at least he's trying.

I wish more corporate and world leaders would follow suit. I have a client that specializes in recouping energy expended in things like hot water/furnace combo's that are more energy efficient, hotels and resorts that waste heat by venting dryers outside, instead of recapturing it, and other systems like this. Seems there is a huge area for innovation.

Last I checked Gore was also paying a premium to buy his power from green sources, primarily wind IIRC.
