Sparky will walk out and piss right by the side walk, if he needs to go if it's raining, if not he'll go farther out. Ginger however on the other hand, will walk about consider the spot sniff the ground, walk about nose to the ground sniffing  and then choose someplace discrete and out of the way to go. It's almost as if she feels more lady like that way. Kind of funny almost.

I don't know the answer to that, I guess it boils down to scents in the area coupled with the urgency of 'going'. My family once had an old poodle who would only crap UP the side of a tree, it would do a handstand and walk backwards until its arse was against the tree then crap. It was the most incredible thing to witness, but also the most embarrassing!

Maybe it has to do with their personality, and yes you're right urgency to go. Ginger's 6 she's more capable of handling a fullish bladder with less concern and sparky is 17 he's not gonna waste pissing time finding the spot he's just gonna go cause dammit it's time to go.

We have 2 beagles both of them didn't want anyone watching them when they were little.  Charlie..he is going on 4 this year.  He will now do his business wherever he feels like it.
Lucy will be 2, she is finally starting to do the same.  In the past she had to have a bush or something to go behind.
Maybe it is some kind of doggy maturity thing.

We have had a plethora of dogs and i still dont know either. Shine, she's 8 now, but ever since she was little she has hated walking in wet grass so if its raining outside she just pees on the sidewalk. And when I take her on a walk she insists on marking stuff (she tries to lift her leg too). We had another dog, Split, who would only do his buisness IN a bush while facing you... weird dog. Echo always has to go in the back of the yard, Tinker doesnt realize that someone cant play with her if theyre in the middle of going. Fly is pretty normal, just walks out and goes without excessive sniffing around.

I have a lot of dogs. australian shephards if anyone was wondering

there is a dog training book that says that you can train your dog to go on command...since i have a boy-dog, who needs to sniff every blade of grass & pee on most of them, i decided that i would work on training him to go when i told him to...i started on the pooping part...i would say, "go potty"...then when he did, i would say, "good potty"...he got pretty good at following that command, except that he learned that once he had pooped, we would probably go inside nearly immediately...

when we came back out on the road, he would take forever cuz of all the other animals that he had to sniff their scents...so i would say, "come on now, we gotta go back to the truck"...now when i say, "let's go back to the truck", he circles, squats & poops...it's too funny!!

lil with my boy he';d always seem to wait till we left the potty area to go. Like at rest stops I'd walk him up and down and back an forth in the pooping area, and I'd like like 5 mins no go. Soon as we walked onto the tarmac he had to poop I was like oooooooooh you lil turkey.

My dog used to make a huge production out of going also...he'd first have to find some sheltered place....he wouldn't go out in the open unless he absolutely had no choice....I'd walk him in a field so he could go off into the high grass.  Peeing was fine....he'd hit anything that was higher that 2 centimeters off the gound, andhe'd have to stop at every tree, even after he emptied out.  But he had to have that privacy when he pooped......never did know why...just his little quirk!
