As someone with birth defects in my both ankles (damn things just refuse to rotate all the way lol) I am fairly used to sprains/breaks.

I've sprained it minorly hundreds of times, once majorly and suceeded to break it twice in the same spot ( 3 days after I got the cast off from the first one.) Which has given me lovely tendonitis thats not really a candidate for surgery.



Well me and my lovely self has decided that its time for another injury. Now since I've only sprained it majorly once... and broken it twice, I have never noticed enough of the qualities of each to tell the two apart (which of course is hard since I don't have x-ray vision or anything.)

Does anyone have any practical knowledge of these types of things? Do you know how to tell the difference between the two?

My doc (although he has all the same equip the hospital does) will not agree to see me until I see the lovely folks in the ER. Now I will seek medical attention. Of course I will! (Although I own everything they would use other than a personal made cast) medical attention is a main priority for me. However... it is a friday night... holiday weekend.. and I am contemplating if it is best to hold off till tomorrow or tuesday or something to go visit the horrible staff at the local ER. No point in going now as long as I can feel and move my foot... if its a sprain they'll aircast it (which I'm wearing now anyway) and if its broken they can't cast it yet since its going to swell.

*I am going to seek medical attention*


So basically I'm asking all you collarme folks, does anyone have any good personal opinions when it comes to telling the difference between a break and a sprain?

Can you rotate your ankle without severe pain?
How bad is the swelling?
Is there discoloration or bruising?
Does the joint make any noise when you move it?
Was there any noise (a snap or pop) during the actual injury?
Is it warm or hot to the touch?
Can it bear weight?
How long has it been since the injury?

Unless you're sure it's not broken, you need an x-ray to rule out any type of fracture. Since you have a history of ankle injuries, you should go to the emergency room as soon as you can. If you still want to wait until tomorrow, please RICE the ankle until then.

Rest the ankle. Keep off of it.
Ice the ankle
Compress the ankle with an ace bandage
Elevate the ankle

somewhere between 1.5 & 2 times the size; no discoloration or bruising.

my joint loves to make percussion every day, although today we have 2-4 new band members who have decided to join in. I wish I had noticed if I popped or snapped when it happened...

Always warm, no numbness or coldness or anything of the sort.. I would be making a 911 call if it was. Actually I can bear weight, which for me is that part that worries me. Spraining in the past has always meant bearing weight was next to impossible. This brings back my "lovely memories of crutches and casting." As of right now its been about.... 7 hours since I injured it.

I haven't made the trip to the er yet because at this point no matter than injury I have sustained... other than ex-ray and ruling out a break they aren't going to anything for me that I can't do myself.

the herb Comfrey ( in times past also called "knit bone") is a great plant to try and keep on hand for sprains/bruising. With 3 kids, i used it quite a lot ( just mashed up the leaves, and placed it on the affected area - if very sensitive skin, can be put between layers of light gauze .) It has always been very effective , for me anyway, in treating bruises/sprains. As i have said in another post, i prefer to only use the LIVE herb, not processed in any way ( unless you count "mashing" as processing lol.)

Actually if it is broken it will start to heal. I walk on a broken ankle right now. I broke it in the military and my dim doctors never x-rayed it. When I got to an outside doctor it was too late it had already started to heal.
I would'nt wait too long if I were you.

The reason I didn't run out is because although they can diagnose a broken ankle, they can't cast it till the swelling goes down. They'll splint it, and I could have done that at home. I have several, as well as a removable walking cast (somewhere around here anyway.)

There was no use spending a holiday night in a busy ER when all they'd do was put the same thing I owned (and was wearing) on me. Then send me home and tell me to follow up with my doctor for a cast. Personally I figured I mine as well go when its quiet and spend less time there since it wouldn't matter anyway.

Going the night I injured it other than having a diagnosis would have been pointless since I still had normal feeling and bloodflow. Going several weeks without getting it checked? Yeah that could have created serious problems if I had broken it... a day or two? No. Not unless I was overexerting myself.

Sprain, although still waiting to get an appointment with my actual doctor to find out how much damage I actually did. Don't feel like risking one of the other colleges in his group again to get seen sooner. Rather have the specialist and not just a sports med. Learned that one the hard way.

Most likely going to get the same spiel again anyway... still had a good two years anyway!

P - Pain
L - Loss of movement, function and/or sensation
U - Unusual movement
S - Swelling
D - Deformity
I - Irregularity
S- Shock/shortening (mainly for long bones ie thigh)
C - Crepitus (sound of bone ends grating together - don't test for it).

This is one of the nmemonics used by Amb/first aid staff in New Zealand for fractures and it's quite handy
