A few thoughts and comments.

The article describes a house which was trashed by the persons being evicted.
The 'pet' which was discovered, was a starving PIT BULL.

Two thoughts, here.

1. There are many people for whom a pet is just an animal.
In contrast and for example: for me, a pet is a family member.

That being said, in the context of this story:

2. Perhaps the dog was intended as a final insult, considering the breed?

The departing people may have intended,
that the animal attack whomever came to take possession?

Just a thought.

On another level... I have seen people evicted.

The sheriff has, in one case I am aware of
(these evictions were in my immediate neighborhood, that I know of them)
arrested the older couple who were being put out, and had them hauled away.

The couples' belongings were then piled at the street,
and the neighborhood had great sport
riffling through and gratuitously destroying them.

Had these poor people any pets, what do you suppose came of them?
Homeless shelters, and 'people' shelters generally, do not allow pets.

Why ought only those who have means, be permitted to have (and love) a pet?
Something is seriously upside-down, to suggest such an equivalence.

If one had to decide between saving a cat/pet pig/dog/geiko/bunny rabbit, and a fellow human being, which creature would we choose, in all objectivity?

Depends on the animal, the human, and the definition of "save."
If GWB and my cat were drowning, it would be a no-brainer: save the cat.
Other cases are not necessarily quite as clear cut.

Whilst I agree with Aswad that an ideal society ought to strive for harmony by showing respect to all living creatures, I wish to ask him whether he thinks that abattoirs should be closed down.

I think they should be set up differently.
Temple Grandin has done some work on that, for instance.
Major difference between killing for food and killing out of indifference, though.

These places torture animals so that shoppers may be provided with nicely packaged meat at the supermarket.

Dunno about your place, but around here, there are reasonably frequent inspections to insure that an ethical standard is maintained. The weak spots are mostly associated with transportation. Not that I'm saying we don't have miles to go, but torture doesn't quite describe most of the meat industry here.

But, yeah, its only justification is logistics...
...can you imagine if everyone hunted for themselves, as responsibly as they drive cars or keep pets?

Another point I'd like to raise with him is that this 'my belief/your belief' dichotomy only works up to a certain point.

It works all the way. But that's non-trivial to explain, and sort of off-topic.

When it comes to organising society, we have to find compromises that take into account the general consensus.

Well, it's certainly the expedient route. Casualties along the way include jews, blacks, gays, and so forth. Oh, and pets.

quote:

Thankfully, so far, the majority has NOT agreed to torture and execute individuals guilty of animal neglect (not that it's acceptable, I reiterate).

Which is also what I said: they shouldn't do such things.

My only difference was the corrollary that if they're gonna do it, it might as well be for this.

quote:

OF COURSE it's all wrong, but what's up with the skewed priorities here?!

My priorities are pretty straight forward.

Whether they conform to the expectations of any given society, is a different matter.

Health,

luci..that wasn't aimed specifically at you, really..

and I'm not saying torturing humans is a good idea...
but expressing anger by saying "oh those bastards" or "fucking dickwads" or "shame on them"  just doesnt come close to verbally expressing the outrage that I'm sure we all feel!  Some people find expressions of a violent nature to be more satisfying (even with no intent or actual desire to follow through on the expressed statements)than a simple "fuckwads" and such.  Consider it a stepped up version of cussing.

An emotional response is in no way a correct response. It's an understandable one, but one that has to be questioned and put in perspective. Always.

I've put it in perspective, and would daresay that it's not a good idea to put it in perspective, unless the one you have in mind is a more narrow one. Otherwise, there's this bit about how our world does not look too well if we set the perspective to 360x360 degrees. It's certainly a less pretty picture than this thread.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Yeah, I can see what you mean.  I guess the thing that comes closest to driving me to that point is when I read about horrendous child abuse.  Kinda makes one see the justice in that "eye for an eye" thing, I suppose.  That's as close as I come to getting to that state of mind but, even then, as well-deserved as I feel it to be, I realize that doing the same to them would be just as barbaric.  And, of course, I realize that is only my opinion and others may feel very differently.  It's sad that threads like this even exist due to such things actually happening but there are some scary-ass folks out there as we all know............luci
