Keep a water bottle handy, and when she bites you give her a good squirt in the face.

If you try the water bottle with my siamese cat, he would just look at you strange and then keep doing what he is doing.  It doesn't phase him much at all except to shake off the water.  A can of air on the other hand, works wonders for him.  Sounds like hissing and he doesn't like it when either the boss cat or I hiss at him.  He is such a submissive 'little' boy  *g*

Oh, you went for the bits that pups like sticking in smelly stuff, me, I bit the ears, a yelp was enough to know the dog felt it.

Odd is, the pup was only bitten once or twice, and if I remember for only one day. Border collies learn fast, you can never trick them more than once.

i'll agree with that on the border collies!  and i went for the ear too, when he broke skin but didnt draw blood.  he learned FAST.  one time.

when he was 10, and blind, and snapped hard enough to draw blood when he didnt realize it was me...he screech-yelped and fled to his kennel, knowing he had done BAD to mama....i forgave him, made him come back out and snuggled.  poor puppydog.

Here is a link to a slideshow of all 5 of our cats.  Once it opens up you should be able to click on "Slideshow" to view it.  I have also added in a few extra shots of the siamese to show his growth from 8 weeks to 1 year to now.

Enjoy!!

Kyra, I did indeed enjoy! Such lovely kitties, and the Siamese has grown into a handsome cat. I confess to cooing over the "baby" pics.

Sadly, I don't feel it's fair to bring a frisky kitten into a home with a wheelchair (at least a home as small as ours). I fear for the poor kitty's tail and paws.

With apologies for hijacking this thread.

love bites. She is 5 mos old. Do I have to worry about her biting me harder in the future or do i need to be worried about behavior?

I am a new time Mom.

thanks for the help!

I'm glad you asked this question.

I've studied feline behaviour for over 11 years.  I have a Ph.D. in this area.

This cat hates you.  She will never change.

It will get worse.  Much worse.

Within weeks she'll be peeing in your slippers and if you don't do something about it...shortly, she'll be shitting in your morning coffee.

(Trust me on this).

*hugs back*  poor wolfy's been gone about 5 years now....blind, mostly deaf, and starting to have health problems...we got in a situation where we were going to have to move, and took him to the vet because i was worried about how he was going to handle a new location.  after some talking and some tests, he was in the early stages of hodgkin's disease and she said it would be much kinder to him to put him to sleep than to put him through trauma and then him having only 6-10 months at best.

so i did the good owner thing, and sat on the floor and petted him while she gave him the injections, then cried like a baby when he was gone.

kitten, who tried like hell to be a good pet mama.

Kittens teeth and claws are known to be the sharpest things on earth :)

Definitely give them toys and scratch posts to break in, and remember that if you wind them up too much, they can just go bonkers and it's your own fault to get attacked.  Make sure when you play that you keep them focused on the toy and give them some time to calm down.

A squirt bottle is good for serious offenses, but for basic training, a firm tap on the nose between the eyes is the universal cat symbol for "cut it out" and mixed with a clear "no kitty" will be a good help.

If you do find yourself caught, stop everything you are doing, push INTO the cat firmly, unhook yourself and then turn you back to them and don't make eye contact so that they know this is bad behavior.

I did a google search on cat's body language and found this article that I enjoyed reading.  It might help with understanding your new kitten.
