winterlight -> bear with this new kitten mom what are some good home toys (2/2/2008 11:01:34 AM)

for a 5 mos old kitten? She seems to like my all plastic pen. She can pick it up in her mouth and bat it on the floor.
She doesn't go for any type of ball even those with catnip in them.

thanks!

a good old fashioned ball of yarn or string, leave a tad of the end for attraction--

yarn. fluffy stringy things it can chase. or at least that's what i've found anytime i try to knit around a kitten.

shoe lace (new clean ones)
stick with rope on end so she can jump
no toys that make noises..they tend to scare most cats
another kitty to play with is the best toy

My kitty loves the rattly mice with feather tails you can get at Menards. He immediately removes the tails, and seems to still enjoy the mouse. And styrofoam, and the bouncy mice you hang in a doorway, and bags, and boxes, and the other night he apparently got great enjoyment from throwing my deodorant in the toilet. Laser pointers are fun too. He also is fascinated with my printers, and regularly prints test pages.

I think it really depends on the kitty.

I say no to yarn and string as they can swallow it and mess with their systems.

Marble sized balls of newspaper, plastic straws, paper bags, cardboard boxes, and toy wands with a feather or toy at the end are great.

Kittens don't have the senses developed for catnip yet, so give that some time, and don't overdose them, cats can become immune to it.

boxes are good... tie a rope to it and give her rides... make a hole in one side so can play hide n seek.

Maracca Mouse (or rat, which is the larger version). A rodent shaped plastic shell covered in real fur. Inside are a couple of dried beans or something that make a faint rattling sound. Both my cats loved these things and, rather than exhibiting just play behaviour with them, they would play with them like prey.

Honeysuckle sticks are good too.

To keep the play value fresh I'd hide toys away for a few days if I found them abandoned then bring them out again. This works well with young kids too.

A homemade ball of cellotape, with the sticky side outwards

the pulltabs off of milk jugs are a favorite around here.

I'll second that!

Paper bags, and even cardboard boxes are good. They seem to like just sitting on those kinds of textures surfaces also.

I had one cat that loved to tear paper with her teeth.

Another one enjoyed wadded foil balls.

2-3 feet of a slender wood pole, a wood screw with an eyelet, a shoelace, and some feathers. Put it all together and that's serious fun!

Some cats love to play with a paper bag, like a brown grocery bag, open and lying on its side.  They'll run from across the room and dive inside of it.  They like the rattly noise it makes.

dont wear cotton sweaters when kitty in lap...they'll tear it apart when plucking.

My cats hate paper bags.. but they love the plastic bags

My sisters cat thinks her dog is a great playtoy.   the cat stalks the dog and swats at it and when the dog tries to bark and chase the cat, the cat just look at it like it is stupid (cat is bigger than the dog).

My cat used to chase the dog east bound and the dog would chase it westbound.   They had an agreement I think.

I once had a cat who liked the rattle of a film canister or prescription vial half-filled with small screws... he could kick it around all day.

Sometimes I place a small tab of scotch tape on my cat's head, but that's more for MY entertainment. [sm=evil.gif]

shoelaces, too....I tie knots in each and and the middle..the Girls love it :) Gives Amos a way to carry it like a mouse, with the ends dragging along (she always looks so proud of herself!)

I've spent tons of money on my cats over the years on toys...their favorites remain the thing that comes in the pizza box and keeps the pizza from hitting the lid (no clue what the name of it is) and the top off milk bottles, both of course are free.

To second what LA said about yarn, rubberbands can be hell on a cat's digestive system if they eat them.  My cat had to have surgery when he was young because he chews on anything and apparently ate a rubber band which blocked his digestive system.

They sell $5 laser pointers these days. Cats just go ga-ga for chasing that little red spot of light around. It's a good cardio for them, and you have endless fun playing hide and seek with the pointer while sitting back in your favorite chair with a Coke.
