Ok! Well that was a 500 dollar visit and they still couldn't tell me if anything was wrong with him even after all the blood work and urinary tests and chem pannle, today because nothing showed up in his pee test, they think it's a urinary track infection so they took a test and sent it in.  I kept the poor dog having to pee for all morning cause they said they'd need a urine test don't let him pee  an they never once tried to get a sample  while he had to go, then he pee'd on their floor cause he couldn't wait any longer so I dunno how they took a sample but I bet it wasn't pleasent for the poor dog.

Trust me my lady.......

Your dog WANTS to do what is right, but going outside it painful for him.   Follow my instructions and create a place where he can go inside.   A place that is very very easy for him to get to.     Put the scent of his pee there and "walk" him in that area just like you would outdoors.   When he goes pee or poop there, GO WILD   make a huge deal of it and praise him with great insanity.

Old dogs CAN learn new tricks.   This isn't a hard thing to teach him, but it is something he isn't used to doing.    Give him LOTS of opportunity to do right and use scent to encourage him to do right.   When he hits the mark, GO WILD with encouragement.

You have described a dog with a strong obedience drive.   He lives to make you happy, that is the BEST dog to have.   They are so easy to train.   Set him up for success and make a HUGE deal about his success.   Work to the dog's strengths.

If it hasen`t been mentioned, put a little of their pee on some newspapers, and leave them out for the animal to smell and "re-pee" on them.

Plastic under the papers,of course.

Good luck.

Muttling I am also going to look into some arthritus medications for him. The vet said his pain can be managed, and he does * not* have to put up with it.

Yes, he's incredibly sweet, the only thing he wants is a kind word a kind touch , food and shelter and my attention.  I also praise him when he does go outside and pee.  At night when you wake him he don't want to go, unless you don't try to make him, IE don't take his collar in hand don't look like you're hearding him to the door lol.  But during the day he loves to go out with mommie and other fam members, and I prasie the bejeezus out of him for doing it when he wants to go out. At night he's sleepy and he don't want to wake up for such mundane things as pissing outside lol.

I would say he went from not wanting to move,to being ok with going outside and able to poop much easier.

They help,so do pain killers.

I have to limit his activity now that he can move better, just to keep him from getting lame or sore from running.

What ever the  level of movement, anything will help improve the quality of life.

Sparky LOVES to run, you throw a ball and damn he's in heaven,  hell just let him out sometimes and he immediatly trots off to the back to go do what ever he does, but he does limp heavily after so we try not to throw it so far so hard so much.

Camille I've also thought of making a sleeping station, if you will. His sleeping pad anything else he could want, put lots of floor protection down and then he can continue having water, cause he gets awful thirsty and desperate later on in the evening when we take his water away, so let him have his dish of water, and just clean up the pads or what you've put down in the morning.

If it was me I would arrange a vet visit but also take in a urine sample as the vet about they may want a mid stream sample from first thing in the morning-- for urine they can for infection, crystals or stones, whether the urine is concentrating and for glucose or protein, I would want a geriatric blood panel done as well  the reason for making an appointment for the dog,  so as to check blood sugar, and blood values related to kidney and liver function his thirst could indicate some kidney problems or diabetes and denying water can actually make the problems worse though even a bladder infection, stones can cause increased thirst.   I personally do not restrict water for any of my dogs unless it is absolutely required example for surgery, simply because they are less efficient then humans at cooling themselves as they sweat thru their tongue and feet  where humans sweat thru their skin so have a larger body surface for cooling their bodies down and in the case of them developing certain health problems limiting water can actually be dangerous to them,  and by having water out all the time I can note changes in drinking habits which can be a indicator of a health problem occurring,  for the bladder problem google  belly bands they are designed for male dogs you can use a maxi pad inside to absorb the pee to keep the wetness from the skin but would recommend   washing  the skin daily with a damp cloth to prevent urine burns to the skin if you use a diaper or bellyband, the diaper is no good for pooping though since the hole in cut larger then the tail to prevent chafing under the tail,  I have used puppy pad pretty sucessfully for an older dog, they are scented to attract a dog to go on them, may not be all that effective if you male lifts his leg to go, but you can still encourage him to go in one area  by using a 2 quart pop bottle filled with water for weight so not tipping over  and placing it on top of a couple puppy pads for him to spray on.

They ruled out Diabeties,  I still have to wait 3 or 4 days to find out anything else from the pee test.

kajira, he has elevated kidney test results but no bladder infections and no signs of anything wrong with him other than the elevated kidney test.

My dog actually contracted Cushing's Disease.  it's normally found in horses, but dogs can get it also.  At the end, water was literally running right thru him....he'd drink a quart or more at a time, and have to go out in about 10 minuts to pee it right out.....the urine was clear, so I knew that his kidneys were starting to shut down on him.  The vet had told me what to look for.  She said once the kidneys started to fail the liver wouldn't be too far behind, and they are major toxin removers and filters for the body.  It devastated me to have to finally put him down, the disease shortened his lifespan by almost 5 years.....he was about 12 or so.

It sounds like he is in need of a vet's visit.  There are many factors, some mentioned, that can effect a dog's health that will literally sneak up on him.....I had no idea about the Cushings until he had his yearly visit, and they found it in the blood test.  He did live another few years after that, but it seem like once the organs started having dufficulty functioning, the end came very fast.

Good luck, I hope it works out ok for everyone.

They have those pee pads.  Try to get him to go on those, and if he gets it, even if the pad moves, he won't fail to use it.

Older dogs might be harder (is it a very old dog?)

soul2share, I'm not trying to sound rude here, but didn't you see where I have said he JUST went to the vet.  He's gone to the vet. I spent 500 dollars on tests. They found absolutely nothing wrong with him, except maybe elevated kidney functions. And their only responce to that was to watch him carefully.

Tracey he's 17, maybe even 18. He's not peeing in side much any more now that momma lets him out 3 to 4 times more than before. The only time he pee's in doors now is if I forget and don't let him out. It seems he just needed the chance to go out more, he needed momma to be more contious about making sure he had plenty of pee pee opertunities.
