LAS VEGAS - At UFC 81, a former pro wrestler and a guy who looks like an NFL left tackle learned their lessons.
Former WWE champion Brock Lesnar was submitted by a kneebar in just over 90 seconds against Frank Mir. The massive import from World Wrestling Entertainment looked awesome at times, but his lack of experience killed him against Mir, a great jiu-jitsu tactician.

In the final fight of the night, Tim Sylvia battered Antonio Nogueira for two rounds but slipped up early in the third and was forced to tap via guillotine choke, giving Nogueira the interim UFC heavyweight title in front of 10,583 at the Mandalay Bay.

Lesnar couldn't put one over on UFC fans -- or one of its former greats, Mir. Lesnar got two early takedowns, with the second one coming with 4:20 left in the round. Lesnar then dropped 20-plus punches on Mir.

I follow UFC avidly. I grimaced when it was announced Lesnar had joined and my initial reaction was to think that UFC would become as dirty/contrived as wrestling has over the years. I haven't seen last night's UFC yet, I'll watch that later today but the first thing I did was check the reviews and I have to say I couldn't have been more wrong. With all the hype surrounding Lesnar, I thought it had been prearranged that he'd win - I was wrong, thankfully wrong.

Most exciting fights I have seen in the last few months have been between Huerta and Guida, and Jared Rollins and John Koppenhever.

I enjoy it, but don't follow it as closely as some. As for any thought of them fixing it for Lesnar, that would quite possibly be the death-knell for UFC.

Now, if they can just get things worked out for Randy Couture to come back, they'll be set up for a good run.

Whenever there are UFC fixtures in the UK seats are sold immediately, it's nigh on impossible to get a seat, yet fixtures in the US are rarely sold out. Given the erosion of the great sport of wrestling when it became just another form of 'entertainment' I think I can be forgiven my touch of cynicism when Lesnar was signed to UFC and the hype that ensued. You're right insofar as it being a death-knell for the actual sport, but the realities are that where big money is concerned there are few ethics and people will continue patronising such events b/c to be quite frank, they don't see past the visual of two guys beating the shit out of one another and it represents every personal fantasy they aren't physically capable of fulfilling.

I'm glad that I was so wrong!

I doubt we'll ever see a return of Randy to the octagon. I'm now looking forward to the Serra fight.

Alumbrado, you do make me laugh at times!

I was having a conversation with someone earlier regarding UFC and my enjoyment of watching/other mixed martial arts/sports, etc... I was explaining to them that generally speaking I abhor violence, it sickens me and I don't want to be anywhere near it. And yet, there's also a side of me that becomes hugely turned on when I see two men fighting, whether that be in a boxing ring or octagon (as in UFC). The combatants have to be fairly matched, and when I watch it I turn into a person I really don't recognise. I'm reminded of the Roman era where women and girlyboys were sent around the ampitheatres titillating the patrons who sat/stood watching gladiatorial events (often to the death).
