A question about gags - 2/3/2008 9:53:37 PM

My dom and I have recently picked up a ball gag from Torvea Toys very like this one . It's fun, but it's the first one we've ever used and I've got a problem with it. For some reason, the leather at the edge rubs against the side of my mouth and forms a sore that takes a few days to heal.  It doesn't prevent me from wearing it, but I can't wear it more than one night in a row unless I want some more serious cuts in my mouth. Although it's not a huge problem, we were just wondering if this was common. Could it be a gag-specific problem, or just because it's so new?

Any answers would be appreciated, thank you.

Very common problem, yep!  You can try getting leather cleaners and softeners, that might help a little.

If you want to keep using the one you got, theres 2 ways I can think of

1) Simple wear will soften the leather eventually.  If you got the time and patience necessary, get some leather conditioner and simply handwork the leather for a long period of time.  No guarantee, but a pretty good chance.

2) If you've got the skill necessary, go to Home/Dom Depot and pick up some tool handle rubberizer (MAYBE,  I've no idea if its toxic or not).  Liquid Latex might work as well.  Just dip/coat/apply the rubber or latex to the leather where the rubbing is happening.  It'll knock off the sharp edge and should be a lot easier on the corners of the mouth.

There are some ball gags that don't have that issue, but be warned, can be kinda pricey.

Check the product description.  Instead of a straight leather to ball interface, this one got a rounded rubber coating on a peice of metal.  I can personally testify that the one in the link of above is very easy on the mouth ( I had one, was so angry when I lost it during a move).  This site in the link isn't the only one that carries a ball gag built like that, but you'll have to do some shopping around to find one.

Hope that helps

Thanks for all the replies...it seems like this is just one of those problems that everyone knows about so no one talks about. I might try to grab some leather conditioner and see if that helps.

Suggestion, try a "bigger" ball gag.  It seems this happens when the ball is small enough to be engulfed into the mouth, leaving the leather straps tight on the edges of the mough.  A bigger ball doesn't allow the entire ball to go into your mouth.  Therefore, the straps are not so much in direct contact with the corners of your mouth.

Another suggestion is to not tighten the gag so much.  This will decrease the amount of friction the straps are producing.

most of the leather goods on the market do not finish heir products. Leather has a square edge when cut and this should be rounded off with a leather beveling tool then slicked smooth. This avoids the problem you mentioned.
you can also soften the leather by twisting and pulling it. t loosens up the fibers in the leather.

The latex gags you are talking about are made by Midnight Blue. I have the harness version (http://midnightblues.net/proddetail.php?prod=MB1007-1010) Very comfortable. But they are pricey. (Amazing how easy it is to spend money when away for a play weekend!)

Thanks for all the suggestions! Being a poor, just-out-of-college sub, I doubt I'll be able to get one of the pricey gags (oh, to win the lottery!), but I'll definitely try the leather softener and trying to make the edges a little less stiff.

Another solution to the facial abrasion from ballgag straps, is to pull the strap out from the ball, slightly enlarge the hole in the ball, slip a length of latex tubing over the strap, and reinsert the strap. The latex tubing eliminates the problem, and is very clean and neat. It looks great too.

Latex tubing is available from Ace Hardware, and also from a lot of medical supply shops.
