The thread on spermicide made me think about this but I didnt want to hijack the tread. I know that there women that are alergic to the pill, and there are many people with latex alergies. Is Nonoxynol-9 hypo-alergenic? say that you have a woman that is alergic to multiple of these. Where de we go from there?

Some women and men are highly sensitive to Nonoxynol-9. There had been a theory that it could be used against HIV...the trouble is that is is so irritating to some people it made it easier to catch the virus. If there are no options.. then you use the hypoallergenic condoms or if it is just pregnancy prevention in a fluid bonded couple there are the "natural " condoms...combined with being well educated in the new improved "rhythm method". such as Avanti edit due to spelling

Where de we go from there? It depends...you seem to be asking about birth control vs. protection from STDs. Is this correct? It also depends on where the relationship is - and do you ever want kids - there are obvious permenant (or even reversable) ways such as a vasectomy...all depends on where you are and what you want/don't want...

as anelikaJ mentioned... an allergy or issue with Nonoxynol-9 is actually not uncommon. This of course coinsides with the fact that it can also cause UTIs, and both yeast and bacterial infections. Depending on who you talk to, spermicidal condoms aren't recommended anymore (although obviously its better than no condom or birth control at all.) If you are talking Nonoxynol-9 allergies alone, its not too hard to find other barrier options. If you add latex to that you may have other issues... but it all depends on what kind of methods you want to use. While you may not find them on your normal drugstore shelf, there are condom alternatives for people with latex and Nonoxynol-9 allergies (like lamb or those made with polyurethane.) Just might be harder to find in a literal store depending on where you are and where you go. Some of these don't cover your risk of STD's as well, but from the perspective of birth control they're still pretty good options. Comes down to what methods the people in particular are comfortable with. Hormal birth control could be an option for some, same with surgical options like the coil for women or the copper IUD and the vastectomy with men. There is also the theory that we'll have the reverseable "plug type vasectomy" in a few years as well. To my knowledge the only thing we're waiting for now is the health trials before its approved.

i was highly allergic to spermicide, your lady might speak to her ob/gyn for options that could be used instead of nonoxynol-9. PM

I too am highly sensitive to spermicides, I can't tolerate them. There is another allergy that many women don't know about...Glyercin, which is in the cheaper, water-based lubes. I was certain I had a latex allergy about a year ago and was in the process of buying the non-latex condoms when a knowledgeable salesperson told me to try silicon-based lube with non-lubricated condoms first. Holy Cow, did that make a huge difference...it's a little pricier, but no pain, no itching, no burning....but it's so worth it for me. -GlowWorm

Glycerine and Parabens are both problems w/ lubes. Many brands now carry glycerine and paraben free options. Silicone lubes are great but should not be used w/ Silicone toys...they aren't recommended for Jelly toys either. (I was reassured by customer support from a vendor that the small amount of silicone in Liquid Silk should not pose that problem) Oil based products aren't recommended for vaginal use and they break down latex.

Ah, dear Phin. I think we that spoke the most on the thread hijacked it ourselves. Oh. Copper. Bad. Copper IUDs are bad. But it's scary to think that one partner could have a latex allergy and the other a Nonoxynol-9 allergy. Especially other female-only BC options are harder to know what's going to work. Such as my daughter being a BC Patch baby. Like many others. And the Depo shot making me bleed for 3 months straight. And my inability to take the pill the exact time every day. Oh, plus the latex irritation. (Not allergy, just kinda makes me swell a little when anything latex is inserted into me. Not on me though.) I think without the spermacidal film, I'd be in serious trouble! Haha. Sorry if I inadvertantly hijacked. I love you? <3

no hijack... even if it was I am not one of those touchy guys that doesnt get pissed if my thread goes of on some tangent, hell I have done it to my own threads before... as four the the love... I will take it [:D]

Phin, Is she sure she's allergic to all birth control? Because I'm allergic to the additives in one type of common bc, but I can use others with no problem. If she's only tried one type of bc, she may not be reacting to the hormones, but instead the additives. My gyno said that there was a test to determine which additive I was allergic too, but we just found a pill that worked for me.

Nonoxynol-9 is a type of detergeant that causes allergic reactions in many people.
