JustCurious5051 -> Is it safe to sleep in a posture collar? (2/7/2008 2:40:44 PM)

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any risk other than a stiff neck for somone sleeping in a posture collar for some bedtime bondage fun?

Thanks

Although my boy usually sleeps in bondage, its generally a 2" metal collar, rather than the 3+ inch posture collar variety.  I had a lto of paranoia about his breathing when we first started to do this.  One idea is to put the collar on, and let him sleep while you stay awake and watch.  Observe his breathing and if it seems totally normal, you're probably fine.  If he's an excessively heavy sleeper and/or if he tends to curl up in a way that will pinch or restrict breathing, then I wouldn't do it.  Also, the tightness of the collar is a consideration.  Don't make it as tight as you would consider safe on an awake sub who can communicate needs.  And bear in mind, he might not even be able to sleep in the collar in the first place.

Good luck and have fun!

If the collar is doing it's job, I wouldn't think you could bend your neck enough to restrict any airways.

I have been made to sleep in a 4 inch posture collar many times and i never had any airway issues . That said everyone is different .

Doug is having surgery in a little less than two weeks on C-5 and C-6, his neck.  Both are herniated.
In any event he will be sleeping in a plastic posture collar for 6 week's when he comes home.

the worry is not about restricting airways. If the posture collar works much like a brace, if you have it on continuosly your neck muscles will weaken. When someone has whiplash they need to take the brace off for extended periods of time so they can redevelop the weak and injured muscles. it is useful for neck surgeries but there comes a time or if worn all the time that you can end up using the collar as a crutch and your neck muscles could then atrophy.

This is true, he has been instructed he can take it off 30 minutes a day.
Right now he is still in sort of a honeymoon phase.  Not realizing how uncomfortable he is really going to be.

Have him read about what happens to women who wear corsets continually. I'm sure it's the same idea.
I also don't know how a slave can serve without having decent neck muscles...yanno?!!!

Off 30 minutes a day is not enough to exercise neck muscles. If someone was instructed to not walk on their right leg except for 30 minites a day, do you think that leg would remain in good working order?

I missed the part where it was because of surgery. I thought someone was doing this for play. NOT a good idea.

It didnt register that this was for the person having surgery.
The person talking about surgery is not the original OP. The posture collar after surgery is necessary. So will months of physical therapy to rebuild atrophied neck muscles. I wish the patient good luck.

That lucious - she ain't just a pretty face....

I'd say talk to your doctor... all kinds of nerves back there, and I don't know a doggone thing about this, except that when I have questions, I go right to my doctor.  *He's kink friendly.
