I had a discussion about this with Sir the other day....I think that the reason this is happening (and it's happening here too) is that the economy is so bad, and jobs are so scarce, that corporations KNOW they can offer the lower wages and get the positions filled..because people NEED to work.  It's horrible though...most people, if they're lucky enough to find them, need to work 2 or more jobs to make ends meet...no family time, no personal time...you live to work and work to exist.

My town has about 9,000 residents. If I get the urge for "more" a city of 200,000 is very close, as is Houston, but I'm happy living here.

The last time I checked, fifteen thousand was the population. I've always thought of where I live as the tippy top last outlying suburb of Detroit but it is pretty rural. My neighbors have sheep, cows, chickens and horses. Oh and some goats (I lurve goats, such sweet faces). I live on six acres, heavily wooded and hilly.I love it here, I love that I can wander around outside nekkid. That I can holler if I want or play music as loudly as I want to. But I have to move, the house is too big and the property is hard for me to maintain. As much as I love living here I also want to live where I can get actual pizza delivery lol. I need to be in a place where I can walk to a market, where I have people around me. Most importantly I need warm weather. I will always be grateful that I had this home. The last two years I've been taking a lot of photographs of 'my' deer and my woods so that the memories never fade. I hope that whoever lives here after me loves this place as much as I do. Anyone wanna buy it? [:D] This housing market is scary for sellers!Neat thread Level, btw.

I live in Chicago....and I love this town! The people, the lake front, even the weather which is really sucky right now. Having said that after living here all my life, one day I will move to a smaller quieter place. The thought of less hustle and bustle becomes more appealing as I get older

I currently live in a island hell called Hawaii (oahu). it is not that is to big but to crowded After being involed in 2 motorcycle accidents I have given up on riding here since the people can't seem to pay attention to what they are doing while driving.(avg household has 5 ! ! ! cars) So I can't wait to leave this place for good.

And no it is not beautiful after you have seen it all day after day.

I live in a small village in England near the North Yorkshire Moors, The type of Village where everyone knows everyone, and their Business, Its hard to keep to one self.

I live in Blackburn in the North West of England I am not sure what the population is, i would say it is a medium sized town, close to local big cities ie Liverpool and Manchester etc and also close to the countryside too.

i personally would like to move to a remote old cottage in the middle of nowhere

Greater metro population of a little over 1and1/4 million, surrounded by some of the most undeveloped rural areas left in America.

All us Brits are coming out of the woodwork... it's the smell of beer that's done it!

Ireland is so like that, Riesa. I have a huge Irish contingency to my family - All in Belfast. It's typically clannish, their main forms of socialising are drinking, smoking, shagging, gossiping and fighting. I went over to stay in Belfast in recent years for a family reunion (Jaysus! I found religion!). I met people who knew all about me, including the fact the fiance I was supported to have married just a month previously had disappeared. I hadn't a clue who these people were, but they seemed friendly enough, especially when they were telling me they had my back... Til I realised what they meant. "We'll have him taken care of for you." They were quite insistent, but I refused to accept their offer. The highlight of the night was the national anthem when the pubs are due to close and NO ONE refuses to get up and sing... if they do, it's a quick walk outside and then they have an excuse for not being able to get up and walk... for a long time!

There's a lot to be said for living a rural life!

For many years i lived in a small town up in the mountains, everyone knew everyone, watched out for each other, actually cared and gave a damn for each other.  Currently i am living in a large city, and longing to get back up to the mountains.  i would rather hear gunshots coming from hunters than stupid gang bangers hoping to kill each other off.  The snow and gorgeous scenery is something i also miss a great deal.

We now live...population 390.  I love it here.  The absolute only thing I would change is a real mall.  We have one in town..it consists of about 6 shoe stores.  A JCPenney and a Target.  Radio Shack.  Hallmark..and Bath and Body works.  Herbergers.

All stores I never frequented much..a few decent ones in there.  I was never much of a shopper before but I do miss being able to walk through a mall see the sights and sounds.
The nearest mall is 85 miles away in Sioux City.  My best friend of most of my life lives 118 miles away from me.  She is a 2.5 hour drive because we are rural and don't have freeways. 
I'd put real roads in and more stores.  Other than that you can't beat life here. 

Of course this is coming from someone who wanted to move out of California for the last 22 years as well.  I'm out now and I love it.

This is perfect, I live in Raleigh--a capital city with the country appeal--I don't go to the stable, I go to the farm, smiles, though I have lived in New Orleans (home) and St. Louis---I miss home, however, I love the blend of life here.

I have regrets for leaving.  Five kids..neices and nephews.  As far as my friends...several have already been out to visit..so didn't leave anyone behind that I didn't want to leave.

Sioux City is not a metropolis either.  For a decent mall you have to drive into Omaha..but that's even further.

I live in a rural town of 12,000.  This past week I hate the air quality- I live  on a busy highway.

At times I feel trapped  cos I doubt Icould get my money out of the place.  The house itself is good- the town is  ok... it is the fumes  of the road.

I do   wonder too if per haps another area would have --a change that could be good.  Ild stay rural-  I guess I am a hermit sort of,  and yet payton place would not work for me.  

On the other hand I should simply   be greatfull- as I am sure there are somethat would   love to be where im at..... [specifically someone with high rent,and  no parking]

There are about 6,000 residents. There are also about 8,000 college students. As a result we have a lot more restaurants, bookstores, shops than a community of 6,000 normally does. We also have a larger police force, and a lot more traffic than such a community normally does. Pros and cons on both sides.

We love the money the kids pour into the community. We dislike the amount of property that is not taxable. And we adore the times when the college is not in session and we get to enjoy everything and find parking easily.

Edit. Two crazy neighbors I wouldn't miss (human) and one animal one that should be evicted immediately. There's a bear wandering my woods again and I no longer have a dog.

Well I could call Omaha something other than that.  This is my take.  I lived in California much of my life.  Now, no matter where you live you live in a bad area.  Unless you are in Northern California.  I was in Southern...its just different stages of how bad of an area you are in.  I lived in a good area..I also had a loaded gun within arms distance while sleeping.  My car was broken into once.
I moved to a small town.  One where my neighbors don't even lock their houses.  We had our first murder here since 2001 over Christmas.  It wasn't even close to where we live.  So, you could say we truly do live in a good area now.
Omaha, well it is very much like living in California.  Crime wise.  While the stats may not be as high...I don't know the stats.  They could be the same for all I know.
There are some really scummy areas of Omaha...it would almost be like never leaving California.  The only added benefit would be no smog.
That's my take on it anyway.  Omaha has its benefits but I was trying to get away from that sort of life..so I wouldn't want to go to the same life just in a different place.

Pop 17 - 18,000 year round goes to 23-24,000 in the winter.  Lots of snowbirds have second homes here.  I live in the higher desert area of the "Valley of the Sun", so although it will get very cold tonight (brrr-hate those freezes!), right now the doors are opened and the sun is shining.  I tend to be cold, so if I can open the doors, it is a very nice day!
Small enough that we still share our land with the javelina, quail, jackrabbits, coyotes and the occasional bobcat, but close enough to the bigger cities so we can shop at the mall, choose a movie theater or attend great cutural events.  In fact, we have cultural events right here in our own park.
Sometimes I think it is getting too big (three traffic lights in town now), but we are basically built out, so I can be content with things as they are. 
Oh, and no streetlights!  So we enjoy beauty in the night skies!
