This is awsome everyone.

The Simpsons is comming out with another season of fun filled episodes. How long will Fox keep this awsome cartoon running? I pray the series will never end. It's been around ever since I was a kid. I couldn't imagine a life with out the Simpsons. What say ye everyone about thoust Simpsons?

WickedKev -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/9/2005 1:57:33 AM)

It can be hit or miss for me, but the kids love it. I do get 'Simpsoned Out' after a channel here shows 4 back to back episodes everyday. I got to where I only allow the kids to watch one per night.

greenie -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/9/2005 8:15:16 AM)

it seems to me that about a year ago i saw an interview or something where the writers said they were running out of ideas and were going to stop putting out new episodes. one thing about the Simpsons is that as long as it's been around it's still unique and there is nothing else like it on tv.

perfection20005 -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/9/2005 8:34:08 AM)

I can take it or leave it, but some of them are really funny. I started watching it because of the kids, but they are gone now and I don't watch it as much.

*grabs soapbox.............online virgin soapbox even!*

*clears throat*

To me, "The Simpsons" and""Married With Children" ( to name just 2 of MANY), represent the insidious tv programs which should bear much of the responsibility for the many negative changes that have happened to children/parents/society in general over the last 30 years.
Whilst I acknowledge that they are "just a tv show", they carry many underlying "messages"( advertisements in particular, do this, and one that I happened to catch a short while ago was an ad for Levis....the one where the guy "fakes" his favourite Levis to give to his girlfriend - presumably to show her how much he loves her/is going to miss her - then we see he has his REAL ones still....................so what? Where's the harm in THAT??? Does no one else see the unspoken message in this ad? Does no one else see that this ad is saying it is OK to DECEIVE someone because a pair of jeans means more than TRUTH?) . I believe it is shows like "The Simpsons" , as well as much other stuff on tv, that have subtly, and not so subtly, caused many negative changes in family life and structure. I have no academic or scientific "back up" for these beliefs..........simply a lifetime of observing people, observing the human species. ( I am not a huge fan of the human race as a whole. Which might explain why I am somewhat of a hermit. *smiles*)

When I have tried to point out some of these things to people, they usually just say "It's JUST a tv show!! It's not REAL!!" TRUE, but what about the things that are implied, the "messages" sent? How many shows have kids "manipulating" parents, showing parents as stupid etc.? We all laugh at these parents, and so do the kids, but that doesn't stop the message from being taken in by the kids ( just using parent/kid shows as one example). Can't people see that these shows gradually alter how kids think about things? It's NOT an obvious message, it's NOT a blatant statement, but it IS insidious. I hesitate to use the word "subconscious", but that's the nearest approximation I can use to describe how tv affects people - and not just kids, adults are just as receptive to "unconscious" messages.

20 years ago , when my youngest child was 4, I acted on my fears about the future impact I believed tv would have on families/society. I sold my tv/video. About 2 months after doing so ( and having many moments when I almost wished i hadn't sold them), I received a letter from the school, asking to talk to me about my children's behaviour. Far from wanting to "complain" about my children, I was asked, "What have you done?? Your childrens' creativity has gone through the roof! They are amazing to watch!" ( Not exact quotes there, obviously, but the point comes across). I simply replied that we no longer had a tv. The teachers were shocked, as were many others who found out we had no tv.
As my children grew, and brought home friends, it was gratifying to see their friends go from, "You don't have a TV???!!!! What do you DO then???!!!", to - "Can I visit again soon??"
10 years later, when I felt they would not be so "influenced" by tv, I did buy another one. The strange (GREAT!!!) thing was, they had very little interest in it.....they would watch videos, play the odd video game, but tv ( and in particular the *%$## ads!), bored them silly. At home ,now in Texas, we have a tv.........we watch about 2 hours a week ( Stargate and Stargate Atlantis - Master and I both love sci-fi), and occasionally we watch a movie. We MUTE ALL ADS!!!!!

I find it difficult to put into words exactly what I believe tv does/has done to people. All I do know is that it horrifies me to see the changes that have occurred over the last 30 years. Many of these changes have borne out my earlier fears.
Television is an incredible "teaching" tool, of that I have NO doubt. Sadly, it has been used to "teach" many more negative things than positive things.
Even sadder, is that people just don't seem to either care about what tv does/is doing, or even deny that it has any impact on people, especially, children.
Bottom line? TV equals MONEY, ergo TV will continue.

*steps down off soapbox*

SirKenin -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/9/2005 9:24:06 AM)

I can't stand TV. I was brought up essentially without TV and now that I am older I hate it. Almost everything about it is idiotic it seems.

HOWEVER... I love Simpsons. lol. Go figure. [8D]

They should grow up. Barts been in the 4th for like 13 years lol.

luvdragonx -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/9/2005 4:09:26 PM)

Careful getting down from there, soapboxes can be really wobbly[:D]

Ok, my kids watch tv. They sometimes watch the Simpsons. They also watch other shows that I find mind numbing. So I limit their TV watching time. Do they pick up on some of the less than admirable points of these shows? Yep, sometimes. Do they try that logic on me? You betcha. Do they get away with it? Nope. THAT is the best lesson for my kids on not believing everything you see on TV.

I did an experiment. I let my kids have non stop access to tv, video games, computer. After a few days, they got bored and started doing other things. Then they'd start again. Then get bored, then start again. I'm like that. I went 2 months and watch about 5 hours of TV total, cuz I just wasn't interested. TV is not the end of the world for our kids. When you replace your presence as a parent with anything - TV, sports, computers, clothes, money - you're going to see problems.

WickedKev -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/9/2005 4:22:54 PM)

Its not the shows like the Simpsons that bother me it is Reality TV shows. TV for the brain dead. Over here 'Big Brother' is the most popular and people had told meI had to watch it. I sat down one night and lasted about 10 minutes, I could not watch a group of people I wouldn't want to know in real life interacting with each other. Have never tried to watch it again.

frenchpet -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/9/2005 4:48:58 PM)

I like it, sometimes, although I agree with phoenixx. I remember that when Bush was telling blattant lies to justify his war, Bart had very hateful jokes against France. For kids, taking french class at this time was like accomplishing an act of resistance against ignorance and hatred. And matt groenig had his share of responsibilities for spreading stupidity.

So...I prefer Calvin & Hobbes. By far. I've always enjoyed reading more than watching TV anyway. Watching TV means being passive like... Calvin in front of TV. Same with most movies (except for the Dogma movies and a few others). But I prefer watching a good documentary than reading a book about the same subject, so I don't loathe TV.

What really bothers me about having a TV is that it usually means less sex.

I'll be the first to say it... Could never stand a full episode, so I won't miss them a bit if they go.
Sorry Fangs and other fans, lol. M

I love the simpsons- I get a kick out of Lisa Simpson and her tree-hugging ways-

SirKenin -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/12/2005 9:15:37 AM)

The new episode of Simpsons on Sunday was boring. Same old thing. Homer pissing Marg off. Marg leaving. Homer does stupid things in order to win her back.

*yawn*

Tempestspet -> RE: SIMPSON FANS (9/12/2005 9:35:53 AM)

I have enjoyed the Simpsons. My kids think it's funny, and watch on occasion.

To the ranty, soap boxy stuff. My kids, gasp, are spoiled to the extent that they all have TV, and satellite, DVD players, playstation (ok there's only 1 of those in the house) in each of there rooms. Master and I have 3 children. Like another said, the reality check is when they try the little tricks on us, and it doesn't work. To be honest, they don't try much.... because they know it's TV, not reality.

Even though they have all that in their rooms, they still are usually outside. If I am trying to find one of them, I'm more likely to find him or her outside than in.

You know, I have to wonder why parents are not blamed for the stupid crap there kids do, rather than enjoying blaming TV, and programming. I grew up knowing that I couldn't grab a gun, and shoot someone "just like Elmer Fudd" and think that the person would get up laughing, and be fine. Why? Because my parents raised my sister and I. They taught us what we needed to know, rather than trusting someone else, school, TV...whatever to teach us. That's not the fault of TV, that's the fault of stupid parents. Should we regulate TV, and programming to compensate for stupid people? No!! Because I like to watch what most would like to see taken off TV, and how dare someone have the balls to tell me what I can or can't watch as an adult.

I know my views are prob not terribly popular, I am fairly "to the point" and simple about it. Sometimes, to the point of over reaching into where I didn't mean to go. I can give a truth, that's hard to handle, but I apreciate those who can respond anyways... and still listen. Thanks!!

Wow... ok hands the soap box to the next person....laughs
