When all kids needed was a football or a book and they'd be as happy as pigs in shit from morning 'til night..........

When a pint of ale was 75p.....

When it snowed for weeks on end......

When the Cup Final or any other major sporting occasion wasn't a corporate event......

When people were self-sufficient and everything you needed was in the village - people grew their own vegetables and kept their own hens/chickens etc....the pre-supermarket days.....

When drugs were confined to the big cities and were deemed to be unacceptable......

When drinking and fighting were all in a day's work.......

When fish and chips were under a quid......

When working-class institutions - trade unions, heavy industry, workmen's clubs etc - were part of the social fabric of Britain....

When the miners went on strike for nigh on 18 months and had no income for that time to clothe and feed their kids, but the solidarity among Northerners meant the community made sure no kids went without.......

When political parties had distinct opposing views and policies........

When the Conservative Party only had to scream "TAX!" to get elected........

When women had more fingers than shoes......

Those were the days eh.

What's the average cost of a pint up north, NG? In Wimbledon, my old JD Weatherspoons regularly put on promotions at 99p a pint, which is exceptional value, although didn't much fancy walking up to the barman and asking for a pint of his 'Dog's Bollocks'.

I remember when:

Curly Wurlies were almost a foot in length

Having to wear three pairs of socks b/c the shoes I was walking to school in were a size too large - they were bought on special offer!

Snickers were called Marathons.

Each house having a coal bunker and smelling the burning coals as I walked to/from school each day... Getting covered in black (still have a tiny piece embedded in my knee after trying to ride our dog (large old english sheepdog) into the bunker to get some coal) when it was my turn to bring in a bucket.

Far too much. Nigh on two eighty is an average pint - shocking, really - although it couild be worse, I was talking to an Irish bloke the other night in my local and he reckons it's even worse over there - they're looking at upwards of 4 quid.....

Aye, I remember making my Gran's fire.....and my mum's........my Grandad was an ex-miner and as part of his settlement my Gran always got free coal, which doesn't sound much but in the mid-80s times were hard and people didn't have much 'round our way, so she was more than grateful. My Grandad worked under the water right at the bottom of the pit for nigh on 50 years (he started working down the pit at 14, I think) - it completely ruined his health and he had all sorts of conditions as a result - he died 3 weeks before he was due to retire as a result of conditions from working down the pit and my Grandma got nothing as a result (except the free coal)...

I also remember the tornado that touched down in downtown Nashville, the spring of 1998 I lived in Bethpage TN.

I was living in Mt. Juliet at that time.  My friend Tim has a house in East Nashville.  The tornado went down the cross street by his house, took of the front of one of the houses.  Tims house had to be reset on it'sfoundation (got knocked slightly sideways).  I remember driving as close as I could, seeing the destruction, and being at a full out run and crying my eyes out because I was so worried about him. By the time I got to his house I could barely see for the tears.... ran in the front door and practically knocked him over when I grabbed him and hugged him tight...

Spent the next few days with him, working on cleanup crews.  HE got a tornado tattoo with the date...LOL

Gosh, I also remember the 'old' money. As a wee child I was fascinated with thruppenny bits, and would boast that I was the Queen of England if a relative gave me a silver sixpence.

I was seven years of age and got on one of the open backed buses. The fog had started, pretty soon we couldn't see one another on the actual bus itself as it was so thick. I remember crying b/c I was lost as I didn't know which stop to get off at and a piercing whistle soon brought a policeman to the stop to take charge.

I read somewhere very recently that the whole of the UK's beer prices are going to rise to £4 a pint, NG.

Is it the fact that chocolate bars HAVE gotten smaller, or that they just seem that way b/c we got bigger as we aged?

Times were hard, but families seemed more content - 'making do with our lot', so to speak. It was an extremely hard life for so many and even though the pit life came to a halt, its effect were felt long after as your poor grandad and gran discovered. When the pit life ended, I remember the uproar then, b/c while it was a dirty, hard life, which often resulted in premature deaths, it was a regular income and the uncertainties of finding work even harsher on families.

The Great London Smog of 1952 killed anything up to 12,000 people. Even after the clean air act, smog as an issue right into the 60s

I wasn't around for the Great London Smog, Politesub, I still remember frequent fogs until I was aged 8. Not understanding the ramifications of all that fog, at that age I considered it a great adventure.

Thank you for the link. I'm feeling very nostalgic today after reading this thread.

Seeks, friends of my family owned a pub in Peckham. They kept all the empty barrels/kegs out the back which was fenced off. We always knew what ones originally had cider in - the acid from the apples would eat the flesh from the rats' carcasses, leaving just the bones. The acid in sodas pretty much do the same job and it's why I don't drink that stuff despite it tasting nice  If you leave raw chicken in a container of coca cola it'll cook it through and take hardened grease off of just about anything lol

Oddly enough, your Curly Wurly is pretty close to the original Marathon bar, while a Snickers has always been a Snickers over here.

Thank you for the link. There are some online stockists that offer 'old fashioned' confectionary, it's interesting to see what can still be purchased. We also used to have things called 'gobstoppers', and every child lucky to have one would spend the entire day sucking on it, then take it out and wrap it in a tissue, keeping it in their pocket for the next day... If a child was 'best friends' with someone they'd allow them to have a suck lol

Yeah, I remeber pounds, shillings and pence and half crowns and  tanners and threepeny bits (pronounced thREPny or thRUPny bits, for those too young or to distant to know better) - and imperial measures (quick, how many scruples in a dram?).

* hoisting his .5L of scrumpy *   "Cheers! And, God bless the metric system! "

I remember when the US attempted to go to the metric system... being a non-mathematically wired person anyway, school was HELL during that time.... *sigh*

I have a friend who; in some farm accident; clipped off the 'fuck' finger of his left hand.  One time he asked me if he could borrow some money, and I said how much, he flashed up his two hands.  I said nine dollars and fifty cents?  Hows about I give you a tenner?

He had trouble with the metric system too.

I still have difficulty and 'think' in terms of pounds, ounces and grams. A few weeks ago I went into a deli and asked for a quarter of one of the salamis on display. The girl serving had to go and ask one of the older members of staff what a quarter was. My fault entirely, while I DO understand the metric system I still revert naturally back to imperial measurements.

Metric is easy - doing the conversions to imperial is hell. Shouldn't have to bother - though I still think of people in terms of feet and pounds.

HEY - btw you non-expat Brits. Do you still have those chocs which looked like smarties on growth hormones? Toffe like center, chocolate layer then a candy shell? ("Melts in your mouth, not in your hands." - jeez, the power of advertising to remember that but not the name, after over forty years, I mean twenty years...)

Which is another remember to add here - How many advertising slogans and jingles can you remember from the murky mists of your youth. It's scary how accurately I rember jingles. Get out of my head!
