Bruises, scratches, and the like. Oh, and the fact I sleep with a stuffed animal... Oh, and I ask for permission for various things in public. Oh, and I also call my Owner "Ma'am" from time to time. Oh, and my collar. Vanillas, including my own -family-, constantly refer to me as "whipped" and "owned"

It's actually vaguely unsettling. :-p

I was out-ed in the workplace 8 years ago and it was a horrible experience. Long story short, I gave a flogging lesson (unpaid of course) to another woman that was filmed by her husband for their private use. They seemed a nice D/s couple and the scene was erotic good fun.

Without my permission, they then sold the footage to a local porn production company. It didn't take long after that to get busted.

I lost all respect from my staff and colleagues, particularly the men. When I complained to HR that one of my male reports hissed "I bet you are one sick bitch", HR told me "well what do you expect, given your lifestyle?" That looked at me like I was some kind of idiot to expect anything but scorn and laughter.

Eventually stories were leaked to my clients, advisers, consultants and the CEO along the lines "do you know she is a Dominatrix as well as a ******???" And they had the video to prove it. Being a reasonably high profile, most powerful woman within the organisation, everyone thought it was a huge joke. Some assumed I must be working in a brothel after hours.

The CEO eventually told me that I could remain at the company but I was not to speak about my personal life to anyone.

Needless to say I never got another promotion and had no luck transferring to another company. Whenever I go for job interviews in my industry, I still wonder if the interviewer 'knows' about me and is just checking out "the sick bitch" for himself..

So NO. Everyone knows what I am and I wish I had my sexual privacy back, frankly.

Now, when anyone tries to pry into that part of my personal life, I look at them stonily and say "Actually, I am a born again Christian. I would love it if you came to church with me this Sunday".

That makes the sleazy voyeurs back off, fast!!!

ricar-- see those round symbols above your post photo? Those are pretty well accepted as symbols of bdsm interest. There are even color/ material codes to signal your specific orientation. I'm sure a little research will reveal places that sell them on the web.

~FR~ A local Domina friend has a mini flogger on her keychain. I have had thumb cuffs on Mine. Once a personal friend (male) that I volunteer with noticed them and joked that I shouldn't display My sex life right out on the desk like that. I laughed and told him he had a dirty little mind. A lot of people I know are more aware of this, even if not active practitioners, than it would seem. Maybe it's the work I do?
I'm not obvious, but I don't necessarily try to hide little things either.

Well that's the thing about symbols-- people tend to project their own meanings upon them. If someone interprets an object as a D/s symbol, chances are he or she has some thoughts/ tendencies that way ...

I will soon be getting the emblem as a tattoo, with Celtic knotwork worked in as a nod to my Irish/Scottish Ancestry. And I would love to know where to find an emblem car decale!

Depends on the venue but I have leather pride rings I wear on a necklace for public kink events like munches. I have a carriage whip pin I can wear if I'm wearing something that a pin is appropriate for like a jacket or vest. Being where I am though I've pretty much given up flagging because people are in general just clueless about it. In NYC, in Manhattan, to be specific, it was easy to flag and I did it all the time.

I had one of those mini floggers hanging from my handbag, it wasn't really noticed until one day while fidgeting I knotted all the ends of the strands, got a few comments then which I just smiled off.

A submissive friend of mine used to carry around a zippo lighter with the bdsm emblem. He would always be lighting women cigarettes then leaving the lighter with the emblem facing up waiting to see the expression of recognition. I used to wear handcuffs on a biker jacket, but then, it also had bits of an ancient ethernet card on the lapels. Hurray for blurry lines between kinky gear and punk. :)

Also not so subtle, but could be (and has been explained away as more than once) novelty is a little "bondage bear" that I have.

As for subtle cues, I'll get some colored armbands sooner or later (think hanky code in the form of armbands).
