How does one go about getting a large enough name in the community eye to start a local meet and greet? Anyone have any experience in this? Help suggestions comments?

I don't belive that you need to have a "large enough name" to be able to organize a munch. If you contact people within your area..(Local groups, clubs, etc) and let them know that you are organizing a munch, that is usually enough. If your first munch goes well, word of mouth will spread and you will attract more people to the event. (Granted, if your name was Midori, or Guy Baldwin...you'd probably have standing room only for your first munch) Just get out there and set something up.

I would suggest you get to know the people in yur area throught the various chatrooms first.. maybe there's one that your not even aware of and you could be there when it's happening... esspecially in a 'nilla bar surroundings. I'm in southern Ontario, so unfortunately I haven't come across many from your area. I have heard of them happening and if your check out a site.. I hope its ok...dssg.org it may lead you to ones around you.. Good Hunting :) IWY

Just like they said. When I first started mine. I merely made a yahoo group. Waited for people to sign up. As I went to munches I talked up my group and munch. People signed up faster.
I'd expect about a good solid 6 month period of having your munch before you get a good following. If it doesn't happen the first or second month, don't give up. Word of mouth only moves fast when its something bad. When its something good it moves a bit slower.

I don't think you have to be a "name" in your community to organize a munch. I don't consider myself a "name", and I host one. I do it because it's more convenient for me than going further from home.

Since I already participated in a number of local email lists (yahoo groups, etc), I posted to all of them asking if there was any interest and if anyone knew of other likely places to post. I got lots of responses, so I went ahead and planned things.

Personally, I've found the best success with choosing a location and going to the same place on the same day every month...like the last Tuesday or the 3rd Thursday, or whatever. It makes it easier for people to plan and they don't have to worry about missing an announcement. I know other munches that rotate locations and days of the week, but personally I don't find that very helpful.

Some months we have fewer than 10 people and other months we have 30+. I consider it a success if someone new finds likeminded people to talk to, regardless of how many people attend. Don't get discouraged in the early months if attendance is less than you hope for. And don't count on RSVP's to be accurate. I've found (and other munch organizers I've spoken to agree) that many people who say they'll be there don't show up, and others who don't let you know to expect them come anyway. Find a location that's open to flexible numbers.

Bottom line, for me, was making it convenient for me. That means on a day that works for me, at a location that's easy for me to get to. If I have to commit to going every month, and putting out the announcements, etc, then it's going to be whatever's easiest for me. You'll never please everyone, so don't even try.

I agree with all the suggestions you've seen here so far.

Also, be ready for someone to email you that they're coming, seem to not show up, and then email after whining because they came and stayed at the bar (too scared to come forward) and 'nobody welcomed me.'

Also, females (as a gross generalization, not as a rule) tend to be a bit timid about coming alone, especially novice sub females. If you can connect with a warm smiled female who is willing to connect with these women before the munch and then agree to meet them at the munch you may find more will come.

If you build it, they will come.

So any suggestions on finding a location that would allow such an event? You all seem very well experienced in this and I love your suggestions thats ever so much.

A lot of our munches tend to take place in either the Valley, or West End (more 'alternative' parts of Brisbane), at regular cafes or restaurants. Kink wear and over behaviour is usually kept to a minimum, though we do talk about it quite a lot still.

The trick for us is finding a place than can cater to the number of people that can turn up (usually between 6-30).

If you are just doing a munch...very social...just meet and greet, then most any resturaunt will do.

If you are thinking that people will show up and want to bring toys, fetish gear, slaves on a leash... Rethink the decision to take everyone to Chuck E Cheese.

Find something more private if you think that the party is going to make other guests feel uncomfortable. (Imho)

I was actually glad you posted this question. I had been giving some thought to perhaps setting up a munch in my area in the not too distant future. To my knowledge there is just nothing here at all. I personally don't require one, as I have friends that I can interact with anywhere, but there are others in my area I am sure that would probably love to know about one another. I had been entertaining the notion of getting with Gloria later when I was closer to ready, with this idea. I'm taking notes.
