chamberqueen -> How long is it safe to wear a butt plug? (2/11/2008 9:56:40 AM)

I was recently given the task, via email, of wearing a butt plug until I was contacted again and told to remove it.  Knowing that something could happen to the person giving me the task I arbitarily decided that if I hadn't been contacted after 12 hours that I would remove it on my own in the safe and sane mode.  However, I honestly have no idea if there is a time limit based on safety.  Anyone know?

If it gets dry it might hurt when you move or take it out. Depends also on size and such. I always allowed my girl to take it out every second hour...or when it felt painfull.

LOL  I did remove it long enough to evacuate.

Actually, the idea behind it was to take me outside my comfort zone and to make me more reliant on him.  It worked for both.  : )

i cant recall where i read it. There is one type that gives off a gas that can be dangerous if its left in long term.

I found what i was looking for. Beach Mistress posted it. The link is probably out of date.

AVOID JELLY TOYS.
Jelly is toxic and in a constant state of off gassing. The stuff it is giving off is toxic and settles in the kidneys, liver and fatty tissues. You can read the update under

or find the original article in the magazine Stern (issue 31, 7/01)

If it's rubber, or made of a non absorbant material, (like acrylic, or pyrex) you're fine as long as you keep it lubed. Definitely use non-water based lubes that don't dry out.

Despite what Anne Rice may think in her books, leather phalli make lousy butt plugs for long term. They absorb moisture, and become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Personally, I've had a rather "realistically" sized one (as in the size of an average 6" cock)  in me for a full 12 hours, with no ill effects. But that was from breakfast, through to late evening. I didn't have it left in overnight, since my Domme at the time wouldn't have been able to monitor my well being.

I'd take it out, clean, and relube between poops and showers.

Yes, bacteria can happen. However, you're most likely to have bowl obstruction issues way before you find yourself having a bacterial infection inside your rectume.

Do yourself a favor and poop when you feel the erge. My health definetly comes first when compared to an online via e-mail relationship.

After a throughout cleaning I have had a fairly large plug locked inside for over 24 hrs with no ill effects.

I know this is a gross question but...what about passing gas? Is it not unhealthy to keep that inside for so long?

Justme696 -> RE: How long is it safe to wear a butt plug? (2/17/2008 1:31:06 AM)

IF you get pain from gass not able to "flow" away..then their is a good chance for belly pain.
It is wise to eat light food  2 days before till when you wear it...at least when your D informs you.
PErhaps moving the plug around might solve it...else take it out...no D...wants His/HEr property ill. (but discuss it)

When it comes to wearing a buttplug longterm:

It's generally best to select a plug that is firm, but soft, and sized appropriately.  Hard or oversized plugs  have consequences when worn longterm that most of us, Dom and Sub, aren't prepared to accept.  Latex, silicone, and PVC are all good choices for longterm wear, but I would not suggest acrylic, glass, or jelly plugs for more than short term play.  Make sure the plug flares at the base to avoid 'loss' followed by an embarassing trip to a medical facility for help with extraction!

Depending on your toilet habits, it is possible and safe for many to wear a plug nonstop for more than 12 hours without serious repercussions.  If the plug is sized appropriately for longterm wear passing gas around it should not be a problem.  It may be uncomfortable, but is not dangerous.  Removal for bowel movements is necessary and should not be postponed.  Every couple of hours it is a good idea to remove it temporarily to reapply lubrication, before putting it right back in there (No cheating!).  This will help avoid any adhesion and lessen the unlikely chance of any tearing of the delicate tissues in the area.  A lube appropriate for the type of plug should be used, though water-based lubes do need more frequent application.  We should all know not to used oil-based lubes with latex toys, and not to use silicone lubes with silicone toys... right?

Subs, including long-distance or cyber subs, do need to look after their own safety.  Any concerns about the safety of any activity should be discussed with your Dom - and any Dom worth their salt would encourage that.

In your case, I would not have suggested that you 'arbitrarily' decide to take the plug out after 12 hours.  It would have been better to have figured that out with your Dom prior.  As in "You will wear the plug until I say you can take it out.  In case something happens to me, if you have not heard from my within "x number of hours" you may remove it."

My two cents...

There really is no scientific data as to how long a butt plug or similar device may be worn safely. In strict terms, a butt plug probably shouldn't be worn in the first place. The anus is an "exit-only" type of orifice and was not intended to have things go the other direction down there. Nevertheless, like many male subs out there, my Mistress insisted on having me wear a butt plug. And as a slave, i really had no choice in the matter anyway. Mistress loved how humble and much more obedient i became while plugged and soon enough, i was being trained for long term wear. Now i am kept permanently plugged. While this isn't painful or too uncomfortable, it is quite humiliating that i will be wearing a butt plug for the remainder of my life.
24/7 wearing of plugs can and will likely cause incontinence if worn continuously long enough. i now have to stay plugged just to prevent accidents.
From previous experiences, however, i was always able to function normally even after fairly long times (5-6 weeks of only removing it to use the bathroom), so i guess it entirely depends on genetics and a bit of luck.

GotSteel -> RE: How long is it safe to wear a butt plug? (4/4/2009 3:25:51 PM)

No one really knows how long is safe to be plugged for and I don't expect there to be a medical study on it anytime soon. There are a lot of credible accounts of people being plugged for over 10 hours and a few legitimate seeming accounts of people being plugged for a very few days. As for 24/7 plugging I've yet to see an account that didn't read like pure fantasy. Here's a blog about being plugged longer term http://buttpluglover.blogspot.com/2009/01/48-hours-and-counting.html
