Lake Mead, a key source of water for millions of people in the southwestern United States, could go dry by 2021, a new study finds.

The study concludes that natural forces such as evaporation, changes wrought by global warming and the increasing demand from the booming Southwest population are creating a deficit from this part of the Colorado River system.

Along with Lake Powell, which is on the border between Arizona and Utah, Lake Mead supplies roughly 8 million people in the cities of Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Diego, among others, with critical water supplies.

If they would quit syphoning the water off to send to california (its not on the cali border) then we'd still have the lake nice and full.

Yet, a thread that suggested global warming was a hoax surfaced a few days ago. Who's to be believed  ?

As a former resident of Vegas all I have to say is that i'm not surrprised by this but I am saddened and you know what I say if everone who buys their share of the colorada wants to keep getting it they need to cough up some more dough. I havent been home in awhile so i can just imagine how much lower the water level has gotten and just how much more of the rock formation you can see sticking up from the water.

I flew over it last month, and it was down a lot; maybe 50-100 feet or so.

Maybe we can get Rumtiger to check it fer real.

The way I see it, it's not a matter of who's to be believed.  There is no doubt that we are in the throes of a climate change.  I lean towards the studies that show it to be a natural cycle, as opposed to the scare tactics that it is human induced.  (Scare tactic:  The lake may be dry by this date.  Scare tactic:  There is a 50% chance... etc, etc.)
Human induced climate change is shown as a fraction of a fraction of a percentage of the entire problem.  So changing our light bulbs and banning all gasoline driven vehicles is not going to solve the problem and reverse this trend.  The hoax is not the climate change.  The hoax is that certrain theorists (yes, theorists!) are claioming that this  mostly  our fault (human fault) and that we can control it somehow.  This has become a big business that people are buying into by droves because they are in a "state of fear".  And who created that state of fear?
We certainly need to be good stewards of this earth, but we are arrogant, in My opinion, of course, to believe that we can change something that is happening as part of a natural cycle.  And who is going to make all that money when we have to buy the more expensive light bulbs?
We need to suck it up and adapt, rather than run around crying "Woe is me, woe is me".  I  live in the Southwest, although I am not dependant on Lakes Powell and Mead.  We have been in a drought for several years.  But we did have almost 3 inches of rain a couple of weeks ago.  Sometimes life sucks and ya just gotta do what you can do, without pretending that you can control the very "natural "natural" environment.  We also probably shouldn't have settled the desert (all those Easterners/Midwesterners arriving and planting their pretty lawns is ridiculous and not helping our geographic situation as to water!) , but we did, so we need to face reality, instead of beating our chests in depair at the unfairness of it all and scambling to fix a problme over which we really have no control.
As does the rest of the world.  I see little point in the USA decreasing the soybean crop to replace it with corn for ethanol, when that leads to a hot market for soybeans taken advantage of by Brazil.  End result?  Deforestation.  The rain forests are being cleared to gow the soybeans!  http://news.mongabay.com/2007/0516-ethanol_amazon.html

When does it stop!  It's time to get practical! Face up to it and start making plans for what we will need to do to adjust, as opposed to buying into this garbage that we can make it all go away if we will just do this and that!  We should be doing the "this and that" anyway...that is not a bad thing.  But it is not going to slow, stabilize or reverse "global  warming!"
There's your hoax!
