There are actually 2 problems here with different solutions.  For the bug, keep a radio playing loudly, 24/7.  if it is a tape recorder that will use up the tape pretty quickly.  if someone is eavesdropping via radio (very illegal by the way) it will bore them to tears.   Montalvani will put them to sleep, and cowboy music will often make them crazy.  Use your imagination.  it You have a wiretap, then the best thing to do is invest in a no trace cell phone, and use it outside of the house that You think might be bugged.
Depending on who wants You, there are scan devices and Oscilloscopes that can help you find bugs, they tend to get pricey, but how much are you trying to save.  Talk to the local (?) spy or counterspy shop probably in your closest city, but again, do this from outside of your area of concern.  NY LA and CHICAGO if you can't find anything in your area.  as for the phone if it is a spouse or family member you should be able to get a voltage testing device from the spy/counterspy shop, or even from radio Shack.  the voltage drops if someone else picks up an extension.  However, if the Government is after you, then you need to go with the disposable cell, or scramble the signal, as the Government can work from the phone central office, and the voltage drop will not show.
Now if your account is on a home computer, then they are probably on to you already.  Paranoia is fun, isn't it?

The question that i have always had about this is , if they are bugging and tapping everyone, what kind of staff do they have to go through all the BS?  Just food for thought.

CuriousLord -> RE: Spies gone wild? how to kill bug ?? (2/13/2008 11:25:25 PM)

I'm under the impression that they pick your signal up from the actual phone company these days, not inside your house.  This means that there's no way of you knowing and no way of preventing the line from being tapped.  If you mean the government.

Private parties?  Well, if they're mouching off the government, that could screw you.  If they privately tap things.. sorry, I'm not an electrical engineer, but I suppose someone with such a speciality might be able to tell you more.

Mutt, go for it.........but you gotta find me first. Then there is the snoopy farmer brigade that patrols the area, and THEN you gotta watch out for............ The Evil Rooster. We won't eeeeeeeeven get into the local hillbillies that, for some unknown reason, feel they need to watch out for me.

hmmmm...............Does this mean that I have your blessing to demonstrate my psy op superiority by defeating your Snoopy patrols, your Evil Rooster, and your local hillbillies?

I will, of course, expect some level of reward for demonstrating my prowess.   What might you offer to tempt me?

There is, of course, one other solution.  Don't do anything that you would worry about becoming public knowledge.  That would frustrate the hell out of them.

CuriousLord -> RE: Spies gone wild? how to kill bug ?? (2/13/2008 11:39:40 PM)

It'd annoy me that my actions would be confined to such things.

One thing that irks me about government spying is the credit card numbers and such.  Sure, I'm not one of those conspiracy theorists who thinks that the government is out to screw us all.  And, sure, I think most government agents probably handle private information fairly well.  But what if there's just one who leaks credit card numbers to a friend?  Unless the agent's caught via his own agency's oversight, I sorta doubt such a person would get caught provided he's smart about it.  Or some other sort of confidential information that a corrupt agent finds a way to make a use of?  Even something as vulgar as ananomously blackmailing someone!  Hell, it could be a CEO over something like his kink for being whipped and beatten; the agent could just be some ananomous guy with some sort of conclusive evidence.

Not that it's the biggest thing in the world to worry about, but it does irk me.

the last i checked, the watchers are more intensely monitored than the watched.  whether or not that is true, the government tries to instill that belief in their employees.  to increase your paranoia a bit, though, the private sector is much more of a threat at the moment...or so i have come to believe.

I agree with this line of thought. I spoke to an immigration lawyer once in MPLS, and she told me the government did not have the staff to keep up with all the illegal aliens. Intimidating force is a huge aspect of how our society works. Fear is encouraged so folks will stay in their 'place'.

I'm no expert on these things but my understanding is that computers "listen" for key words and phrases.  Most traffic is ignored but if someone says the name of a known terrorist or maybe even "Allah akbar," then the NSA homes in on that like flies on shit.

The old saying, "live every moment as though it were your last," has been updated to "live every moment as though it might end up on Youtube."

as a rule it is never good to draw attention to yourself.  outragious clothes, behaviour can do this.

i asked an old neighbor about 9-11. he worked for the pentagon and used the PA house as a weekend place. he said there wasnt the manpower to pour over every tape...

This isn't funny because my house is bugged.(My boss is crazy)

Check all least likly object and anything that may look like it was moved or anything in a good postion to pick up sounds from all over the room/house/whatever. Instead of your house phone use a disposable cellphone that you can buy minutes for, and run water when ever you talk (this scrambles the low freceny of your voice).
How to find a bug.
Get a radio and tune it to a station that is all static, then find a universal remote.(most bugs these days are wireless) Use the scan fuction on your remote (thats the button that programs the remote to function with your TV) and wave it around the room. The radio should make a whineing sound. Now move around the room if the whine grows louder you are closer to the bug. Also this causes a horrible high pitched screech to be transmitted through the wire back to who ever is listening in and makeing them rethink evesdropping in your house.

Have you really tried this or are you making this stuff up?
Most TV remotes I've seen use IR(InfraRed) not RF(RadioFrequency), I can't imagine one doing what you describe for the radio spectrum.  Your radio isn't going to pick up the whining sound unless you're tuned in to the right frequency.  Most radio spectrum bug sniffers involve scanning all the frequencies (like a radio scanner would do) while trying to detect a signal.  Your standard AM/FM radio isn't going to be able to register all the frequency ranges that you'd need to scan if they're transmitting outside of those frequencies.

GoddessKit -> RE: Spies gone wild? how to kill bug ?? (2/14/2008 1:47:12 PM)

Most wireless devices these days are built on top of existing tech and some times the lines get crossed. Blue tooth is a big example. Yes I have tried this. Also if you actually read the directions to your remote, it will tell you this is one way to test if the remote is working. It just happens to also mess with wiretaps, Lucky us.

FRSguy -> RE: Spies gone wild? how to kill bug ?? (2/14/2008 3:01:30 PM)

I use to do a lot of bugs when I was younger but that was before digital.  If its the government your screwed for the most part. If it isnt the govetment then you can purchase a detector to find it... if you know where it is and who is doing it then set them up through the use of your phone conversation. You can bypass the bug and actually make it so you can turn it on and off that way they can only hear the conversations you want them to hear.
