winterlight -> my kitten had diarrhea had had it since (2/13/2008 10:05:07 PM)

before i picked her up to be adopted. I have spent money on tests for her and was given 2 packets of cat food for her when i picked her up. I also got a bag of science diet. After running out of gastric enteric packets i put her on science diet. All this time she has diarrhea. She is now on veterinarians gi low residue diet for 10 days. There is no improvement. I fear they won't take her back and i dont know what to do for her.

She has seen 3 vets. The first one didnt know about the diarrhea as i wasn't sure if that was diarrhea. Upon reading more about cats i realized it was. Anyways any suggestions as to what to do. Everybody that has met her says she is a sweet kitten, 5 to 6 mos old. Anyways it breaks my heart as i am attached to her.

I think that today maybe the last day i could have turned her in but i have been sick and coudln't take her in.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Winter, the only thing I can think of is try to find a holistic vet. I am lucky to have one here - and he has worked some miracles for my furbabies.

Here's an article on causes and remedies for diarrhea:  http://www.healthyvet.com/documents/PDF/Diarrhea.pdf

Hope your kitty feels better soon.

As them to  look for a bacteria  that is caused by stress ....   I  cant remember what it is called but  we had gotten a cat that  was out During hurricane Rita ....  Think  they only  reason the vet here was keyed into  it was  between Katrina and Rita they were seeing tons of this bacterial infection in animals

Get it off the science diet-many so called nutritonal foods are far too rich for even adult cats-and this sounds like too rich or an allergy to an ingredient----find a nice balanced kitten food at your local pet store, one with some rice and grains (expensive doesn't mean good) and feed it three SMALL servings a day--if you are leaving the food down, it could be overeating and filling up in way too many vitamins, etc.

just to check - youre not giving the kitty cows' milk to drink?

First of all I think Im going to die laughing at "holistic vet"( Sees kittens undergoing acupucnture).

As for a cure might I suggest a bag, a brick and a river. J/k Kittens are great with Ketchup.

Might be time for a vet visit.

The kitten is long past the weaning stage as its eating solid foods and is five/six months old. Are the kitten's meds up to date, ie has it been dewormed as round/tape worms can cause diarrhoea in kittens (not just older cats). Diarrhoea in kittens is usually due to incorrect feeding, ie too rich a diet for their immature digestive system to deal with, so while I am a firm fan of the Science Diet (My two cats, who are 14/15 have always eaten this and it's kept them relatively healthy) I personally feel it is too rich for a kitten and would look for something better formulated for kittens. Nothing milky either. For the time being, lean chicken/fish with a little rice mixed in will help it. It could well be that the kitten contracted something from its mother (kittens often do as my two were born with severe complications as a result of their mothers' ill health). So has the kitten undergone testing?

If we dont feed kitty for a day or two does the chap tighten up?

That will tell the story, I am a fan of most here that say you are too rich in diet, and too motherly, and in fact may be killing it with kindness.

MissMorrigan -> RE: my kitten had diarrhea had had it since (2/14/2008 5:47:43 AM)

I know that if I haven't eaten for a couple of days mine certainly does!

There were several litters of kittens and approx. 25 + older cats at the place where my two kittens were rescued from. ALL the kittens had diarrhoea, some survived, many others didn't. They were riddled with worms, sadly.  (lovely subject for a Thursday lunchtime!).

Well, first of all to stave off some of the shitslinging from the bambi crowd.....

Cats, in the wild often do not eat every day, mother cats especially, and they dont bunch up by the 100's in houses.  While you may be forgiven for chubbing up a human baby by overfeeding, cats will easily overeat given the availability of food, even worse than dogs.  I would slow way down on the feeding, and if you feel you must, go out and get it a mouse or some poor cat food.  Don't bring it a dozen tho.

I would get seriously scarcer with the food.

MissMorrigan -> RE: my kitten had diarrhea had had it since (2/14/2008 6:01:47 AM)

No, no, I completely agree with you regarding general overfeeding and providing a too rich a diet. Pet owners, including myself, tend to overfeed their pets... killing with kindness, and the most common side effect of overfeeding is for the animal to have the runs. Not only do they run quickly around the house after having a typical bowel movement, but run twice as quickly if they have diarrhoea and the most important factor is to keep them hydrated - and not with milk. If, after a couple of days, the diarrhoea hasn't lessened then it's a trip to the vets. If it has lessened and starts in earnest again with the reintroduction of a little very lean chicken/rice, I'd still be inclined to take it to the vet and get it tested for possible contracted illnesses from its mother.

I might suggest having your kitten tested for pancreatic insufficiency, it is rare in cats but it would cause diarrhea no matter what they eat.  If she had this it would mean that her pancreas wasn't producing enough of the enzyme required for digesting food, which would make it appear that she had diarrhea.  It can't be cured but it is possible for them to live an ordinary healthy life with the condition, if they have enzyme supplements.  I hope its not something like this but it's worth looking at the possibility.

This link explains it  http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=1&cat=1329&articleid=330

I used to volunteer at a no kill shelter here in Atlanta for a few years. I have fostered, and cared for many felines that were ill. I would say that the "mysterious" diarrhea is one of the worst to diagnose if they do not have a test that will tell you something. I dug into my old favorites folder to find a site, which is down now, but it redirected me to this one http://www.felinexpress.com/cat-health/diarrhea.asp

Good information here. Do not try anything unless directed by a Vet you trust or you have researched it beforehand. Keep an eye out for severe dehydration, as they may need to push some fluid to help the kitten with that.

Good thoughts for your kitten, hope they help.

ok, sorry tired and sick and didn't explain better. No, she doesnt get milk nor will she from me ever!
She has been on:
1. purina gastro enteric (2 packets as per what i was told) i put one packet in a bowl for her to eat when she got hungry, that was what i was advised)
once she finished that i gave her the 2nd packet.
2. science diet kitten dry cat food was next. I put some out for her.
3. Veterinarian gi low residue cat food - 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/4 cup at night.

all 3 she still has diahrrhea. i change her water twice a day.

After she was spayed she went all over the cage she was in. I was told it was from stress. I was given the purina enteric and it goes on from there..

No, i won't eat my kitten, put ketchup over her, leave her outside nor abuse her. tyvm!
(knows u were kidding).

She has seen 3 vets. the 2nd vet prescribed pills for her for giardia (since i didnt have a stool sample) she gave it to her just in case. The 3rd vet gave her a test for tapeworm. She has it. Was given a shot by the Dr. I had to give her 3 liquid meds in her mouth. 1 a day for 3 days. She was tested for giarrdia. I was told she doesn't have it but to continue giving her the pills. It was such a trial getting it into her that i gave up. 6-7 tries a night, she would spit it out. Frustrated her and me. she has had a full spectrum blood test and that was ok. She is healthy according to the vet but her diarrhea. I take her in tomorrow to see the vet to see how she is.

Thanks all for the ideas....

winterlight -> RE: my kitten had diarrhea had had it since (2/14/2008 5:26:16 PM)

she has had diarrhea since 1/28/08

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: my kitten had diarrhea had had it since (2/14/2008 7:51:21 PM)

Have you taken a stool sample and gotten it tested?

patwi -> RE: my kitten had diarrhea had had it since (2/14/2008 8:27:22 PM)

Having worked at animal hospitals for 12 years, I'll toos in my ideas.

1) parasites. very common, and easily missed if the poo has only been tested once.

2) food sensitivity. Don't stop trying with the foods...some pets have such bad sensitivities that they have to eat ultra hypoallergenic foods, hills I/D and Z/D as examples. Some pets have sensitivities to 1 or 2 ingredients, usually the protein source. try finding a kitten formula made with something other than chicken, such as duck or rabbit or venison.

3) disease - someone did mention pancreatic problems. It's more common in dogs, but I've seen it in cats. Be prepared to spend at least another 100 on the testing, there's only 1 vet lab in the country that runs that test.

winterlight -> RE: my kitten had diarrhea had had it since (2/15/2008 11:37:55 PM)

yes, she has had a test done on her fecal matter. I took another sample in today. it tested neg for coccodia (sp)?

They gave me the medicine for it. I have to give it to her for the next 10 days. If by this coming Tues it isn't (diarrhea) gone, They see her next Sat and the Vet told me that he will have to have a Heart to Heart talk with me.

It doesn't sound good for her and i am so upset. I am hoping that this medicine takes care of her.
