Steve Gerber was a real talent. I will miss him. I never saw the Howard the Duck movie, and I didn't want to. As soon as I heard it was going to be live-action rather than animation my first thought was, "It's going to bomb!" Howard the Duck's real attraction was (IMHO) was that he was an elaborate parody of hard-boiled detectives. In a way, Gerber's writing was Raymond Chandler, inside out! Howard had the heart and soul of a tired, burned-out cop who was thrust onto center stage, when he was perfectly content to lurk in the shadows. Such a character does not work well outside his native medium.

Loved Mike Ploog and tried to imitate his style as a kid. Couldn't.

Damn, I haven't thought of that movie in years. I don't think I have seen it since I was a kid. I barely remember the comic book.

A lot of the groundwork for Alan Moore's work was layed by Steve Gerber. The man was an extremely clever writer and contributed a lot to the industry. His wit and talent will be missed.
