LAS VEGAS - Steve Gerber, the comic book writer and creator whose signature character was the alienated, cigar-chomping Howard the Duck, has died. He was 60. Gerber, who also co-created Marvel's "Omega the Unknown" and created the 1980s animated series "Thundarr the Barbarian," suffered from pulmonary fibrosis.

It's sad that Gerber's claim to fame, Howard the Duck, was fucked up so badly with the movie of the same name. The comic series was, on the other hand, extremely well done, funny, trippy, and willing to look at issues that few mainstream series had the cojones to do, at the time.

The Gene Colan issues are just breath-taking. Sorry he's gone.

Absolutely. Colan is one of my all-time favorites (especially his Dracula work), and he and Gerber made a formidable team.

Steve Gerber was a real talent. I will miss him.

I never saw the Howard the Duck movie, and I didn't want to. As soon as I heard it was going to be live-action rather than animation my first thought was, "It's going to bomb!" Howard the Duck's real attraction was (IMHO) was that he was an elaborate parody of hard-boiled detectives. In a way, Gerber's writing was Raymond Chandler, inside out! Howard had the heart and soul of a tired, burned-out cop who was thrust onto center stage, when he was perfectly content to lurk in the shadows. Such a character does not work well outside his native medium.

Chandler, with a touch of WeeGee, out of Disney, with a side order of Camus.  Man-Thing. Those were the days...

Remember Mike Ploog?

And the work Alan Moore did on Swamp Thing? Yes, good days.

Loved Mike Ploog and tried to imitate his style as a kid. Couldn't.

Damn, I haven't thought of that movie in years.  I don't think I have seen it since I was a kid.  I barely remember the comic book.

A lot of the groundwork for Alan Moore's work was layed by Steve Gerber. The man was an extremely clever writer and contributed a lot to the industry. His wit and talent will be missed.
