i have the flu as well, came down with it yesterday.  i did the nyquil thing and it helped me sleep but now i feel like i have a hangover ugh.  i think this kind of thing has to just run its course...sorry, i'm not much help.

Probably not the advice recommended by the medical community but it works for me.....

One pint warm Ginger Brandy (tastes awful).
Drink, lay down under lots of covers, go to sleep and sweat it out (yeah, I know they don't recommend this anymore but it's the way we used to do it). Wake up...feel better. It does work.

I suppose a hot toddy is like hot lemonade.

But hot (not warm, hot!) water, lemon juice, and honey cut through my Bronchitis in December.

Then again, I had it ALL of December since I couldn't get into my Dr. and the ER was out of the question unless I was dying.

The flu and colds are caused by a virus, not bacteria, so there is no reliable 'cure', all you can hope to do alleviate the symptoms.  Any doctor can tell you that a viral infection has to 'run its course'.

Symptom-wise, I'd recommend a cold & flu medication, soups and other liquids.  If you have nausea the BRATT (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast, Tea) diet will help.  Do not drink any milk or plain water.  White sodas (Sprite, 7-Up, decarbonated) will help as well.

Ginger Ale as well.

When i had the flu i had popsicles...it made it feels a bit better but make sure they are low on sugar, and a warning...if you are vomiting it might be colorful

Sambucol [TM].

Elderberry syrup concoction, which works by preventing the virus from reproducing further.

What this does for you,
is limit the body load of virus which your immune system must deal with.

Google it.

...then again,
there is always home-made chicken soup:
starting with a whole chicken simmered down.

The Flu is something you just have to tough out as it runs its course.

Fluids, spiced green tea, hot showers, Vapor Rub, Over the Counter medications, and such is all you can really do to aide in comfort.

Believe it or not, exercise moderatly and consume extra protein. Walks, Jogs, a few weights, pushups, or just Bike Riding will help with your immune system.

There's a Japanese restaurant I've been going to for years.  They serve "flu soup", which is miso with tofu, vegetables (mostly cabbage and shredded carrot), a ton of ginger and garlic and a good, strong kick from plenty of red pepper, which usually sits at the bottom of the bowl as a sludge and whacks me upside the head when I pick up the bowl to slurp down the dregs.  The red pepper always got my nose running and the ginger and garlic always gave me a boost and the hot liquid just plain made me feel better, so I experimented at home with adding ginger, garlic and red pepper to canned chicken noodle soup.  I didn't like it with the ginger and garlic (so I just drank ginger tea to get the effects of the ginger), but the soup was surprisingly good with a good teaspoonful of chili paste.  The kind I use has garlic in it.

I've read that the hotter (spicier) something is, the higher the Vitamin C content.  I don't know if that's true or not, but the chili paste or tobasco or other capsaicin-loaded things I have always get congested areas a little less congested, plus it's a very good excuse to drink lots of water and flush your system out well.

And baths.  Soak in a nice, hot bath.  With bath salts, if you can get them.  While you sip your chicken noodle & chili paste soup.

Feel better soon.

The chills, aches and pains are the effects of a fever.  And, a fever is what causes nausea and vomiting.  The body is too hot.  To aleviate this, take apirin, or tylenol, every 4 hrs to keep the fever down.  Then you can eat without vomiting and your strength will return.  Lots of fluids as fevers dehydrate the body.  Gatoraid or any power drink is good to replace the electrolytes lost through dehydration and vomiting.

angelikaJ -> RE: Home Remedy (2/17/2008 8:15:38 AM)

real ginger helps alleviate nausea...so tea with added ginger or Reeds Ginger Beer (non-alcoholic)

drinking lots of fluids (in very small well spaced sips/sucking on ice chips if nauseaous )

tylenol (acetaminophen) or motrin (ibuprofen) for fever...be careful to watch the labels if you are taking multiple meds...it is easy to exceed  maximum dosing for acetominophen if you aren't careful.

asprin should be avoided in young people with viral infection because of the risk of Reyes Syndrome...(I mention this to remind parents with UMs and also some of our younger members... the risk carries into young adulthood)

Why did Fangs mention all sorts of exercise but not sex?  Huh huh huh?

The flu going around was killer. I had it for a week and took 2 to feel fully recovered. The doctor said if I had come to the office within the first 2 days they have anti-viral meds that can lessen the severity and shorten the duration. But when you are feeling that sick, who can drag themselves out of bed to go get the medicine? But it is available.

I had to laugh, as that is what I do!!!  I'm a Nyquil believer.

Well then, if you gird yourself to thinking of it as "medicine", you can make cayenne tea :)

a teaspoon of ground cayenne and then pour boiling water over... sip, especially at bedtime.

Yeah... when I managed to catch the flu 3 weeks ago, I was lucky to have gone early enough to get Tamiflu (the anti-viral meds.)  After about 72 hours my flu symptoms were totally gone except for the cough.  When I was done with the pack I felt a bit worse (since it "treats flu symtoms" I assume) but I was still a whole lot better then I would have been without it.
