summerblossom -> Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 3:28:45 PM)

For lack of being able to get to a gym or outdoors much is there a fitness kit with possibly DVDs and equipment that I can buy somewhere that can be used in the home? I would like something that is extremely structured and starts of really easy, but builds up.

I'm dieting and I need a really good fitness program I can do by myself at home but that is more structured than a dvd here and there...I have some fitness dvds and they are all generally too hard for someone that is as overweight as I am. Even doing 15 minutes right now seems like a struggle.

I have never been an active person, even when I was a little. My mom was never active either so we never did much activities together. So i'm looking for something that I can purchase by money order online as I don't have a credit card or something maybe in a store but not a large workout machine either because I live in a very small space.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

summerblossom,
i can relate entirely to Your post. A couple of years ago a friend introduced me to leslie sansone's walk at home fitness dvd's...i love them!!! In fact, i walked two miles with them this morning.. They provide a complete cardio workout and it doesn't cost any really money (other than the initial cost of the dvd or vhs tapes), you can do it anytime regardless of the weather, and it's really a lot of fun once you get used to doing it... Feel free to pm me if i can be of any further assistance, and good luck!!
Kali

*edited to add* Also, the way she does the video it takes about 15 minutes to walk one mile and 18 - 30 to do 2 miles...The video of hers that i'm currently using has a one mile and a two mile format, and even if i chose to do the 2 miles, at the one mile mark she always lets me know.

without sounding too harsh for I am not trying to be but before waisting money on more stuff stick to what you have, it will get easier with time, weight loss and exercise is not easy you have to dedicate yourself to it, you can already do 15 mins, in a couple weeks do 20 so on and so fourth when they get easy spend money on something harder good luck and take care

KatyLied -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 4:43:49 PM)

Go for a walk.  Increase the distance every few days.

summerblossom -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 5:41:47 PM)

I used to be able to do 15 minutes. I don't know if I can anymore it's been a while, and I don't work so I stay at home and do mostly nothing all of the time. I was barely able to do 15 minutes and even that I kept having muscle straings and pulls in my back and sides.

And as I said, I need something a little more structured than just sticking to what I have because doing that is not giving me any structure or program that I feel I need to stay motivated.
But thankyou for your advice.

summerblossom -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 5:45:28 PM)

Thankyou for your suggestion but the reason I wanted an 'at home program' in the first place is because I cannot go out walking. A female alone in this very bad neighborhood is a bad idea. We have gun shootings here.

snappykappy -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 5:45:33 PM)

do u have any friends who get out and exercise

if so they should be able to help u set up a routine

have them help u and eat good nutritional things which will help u to stay fit and lose weight

summerblossom -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 5:46:43 PM)

I don't have any friends only aquantances who are all overweight themselves.

xxblushesxx -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 5:53:59 PM)

Yep, Leslie sansone's videos are very inspiring, and anyone can do them. If you can't do all of it, do what you can.
Another thing to consider is pilates. Leslie Sansone has a pilates video, and there are many others. They are very small body movements that use your own body's weight, and muscle to help shape it. It's very good.

snappykappy -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 5:57:24 PM)

then get them together in a group session and do it all together and set goals for ur self and make them obtainable goals no matter if it is just lose one pound this week, exercise this particular area 5 minutes then progress slowly

remember how do u eat an elephant one bite at a time so take it slowly and then progress each week

Well you could come to Nebraska and scoop snow for us...hehe.  I've always been active but lately my right arm literally feels like it needs to snap off when I shovel snow.
I'd stick with Rushemery's idea though.  Go with what you have and even if you can only do ten minutes at a time right now.  Do ten...in a week or two you will be doing 15...it will only go up from there.  No need to waste money because if it is too hard you will give up quickly.

Bound2One -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 6:38:05 PM)

I have to agree with the Leslie Sansone walking videos.  They're fairly easy to do and pleasant also.  Remember, if you get tired or winded, keep your arms down by your side to lower your heart rate.  Start doing research on the internet - google topics of interest and do a lot of reading on nutrition and exercise.  Richard Simmons, though he can be hard to take, is a fantastic inspiration for those who are really overweight.  If you watch his videos, most of the women are easily in the 200-400 pound range.  If you go on Amazon.com you will be able to look up any of these videos mentioned as well as hundreds of others and read tons of reviews. The good thing is that these videos are fairly inexpensive also.  One other thought - you can go on ebay and see if you can get them used cheaper.

Good luck to you!

Join the mall walkers.  I assume you can go to a mall and it is safe there to walk around.

summerblossom -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/17/2008 8:10:58 PM)

For personal reasons I can't get out to the mall often enough.

As far as those other people go we cannot get together as there is not enough room here for us to exercise and most of the people I know have trouble with transportation.

Pilates is not a good idea for me because I have a weak tailbone.

I know it might seem like im just shooting ideas down but I really thank all of you for them but what I originally wanted, and still look for is an actual, structured, program of some sort that I can buy. Not just one dvd here and there.

I already have alot of leslie videos and the easy ones get boring after a while.
I was doing one for 10 minutes and made it go to 15 minutes and for me, I did it for two months and it did not get any easier like people say it should.

So thanks anyways.

Richard Simmons - he's been around forever... He has a very structured plan....in fact there is a lot available.

goood luck

If you want free exercise equipment go to www.freecycle.org and sign up for your local area.  I see equipment on there all the time and you can always ask for what you want also.

If a full weight workout seems overwhelming, try a few exercises at a time spread throughout the day.  I do this, doing upper body one day and lower body the next day with a rest day about every fourth day.  This method is also supposed to help keep your metabolism up all day long.

AAkasha -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/18/2008 2:26:45 PM)

Go to a doctor and get a complete physical and explain your situation.  Before adopting any kind of dramatic change in your exercise and health, you should see your MD.

Thankyou all for your suggestions. I will keep them all in mind.

Willowmoon -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/18/2008 5:11:19 PM)

Okay I am going to be honest here.

It really does seem like you are shooting down ideas and looking for excuses as to why something won't work for you. If your neighbourhood is that bad why did you choose to live there is the first place?

Second go and see your Dr if you are that overweight it is not a wise idea to begin any exercise/diet program without getting a consultation first.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to lose weight, you just need to change the way you do things. There is always ways that you can fit exercise in to your life. Move around more, dance while you do the housework, do 20 squats when you get up from you seat before going on to do what ever you were going to do, use tin cans as weights just keep moving.

I am overweight and currently working at losing it. I live in an area that has recently had a pevert praying on woman, you know what we did? We took back the streets. We advertised in community centres and the local news paper and got a walking group together so that we had protection and companionship on our weight loss journey.  It is much nicer to walk outside with other woman then it is to sit at home and do it on my own.

The biggest thing to remember is to eat right and to keep moving. If you want any diet advice send me a message and I am happy to help though the way my course has taught me I have a go hard or go home mentality for things like weight loss and diet.

Alumbrado -> RE: Fitness/Exercise (2/18/2008 5:24:36 PM)

This is the second such recent thread in which the OP has gotten a variety of suggestions, and mentioned the unsuitablility of almost all of them.

Rather than wait for the ideal (non-boring, easy, compact, cheap. quick, and so forth) answer off the internet, I would second the recommendation above, go get some assistance in real time, be it a Doctor, a nearby school that is doing a controlled study, a church or community center support group, somebody teaching seated qigong...do something, even if it is rearranging the furniture a few minutes a day.

Waiting to prepare to get ready to start looking into commencing to lose weight is a bad plan.
