I am trying to make myself more flexibile.  I am looking for suggestions on dvds that will increase my flexibility.  I'm thinking yoga might be my best bet.  I need something for a beginner.  I can touch my toes but I want to work all the muscle groups.

Im really flexable..Cant do any splits or anything but I can put my feet behind my head. My mother says its from years of being on my back and just as soon as I untangle my underwear from earrings Im going to tell her just what I think of her [;)]
 
 Seriously though, for me, stretches are the biggest help. I do mine daily. Ive never done yoga, I have other ways of finding my center.
 
 Depending on what musle group you want to work out, switch up your stretches and exercises and pretty soon you'll be an Angelic Pretzel ^_^

Thats what I want! I want to be a pretzel.  I am looking for some structured program to work out with.  Right now I go around touching my toes and holding it for 20 seconds all day long.  LOL

I think a lot of it is genetic.
I remember when I was taking ballet lessons as a child, this other girl could hold onto her foot, and stretch her whole leg out in front of her. (and she was TALL)
I am short.
I never could do it, no matter how much I tried.
I can, however, put my toes in my mouth.
I'm not sure what value this is to anyone, but, I CAN do it if necessary.

Thats another problem I have, I have really long legs.  I probably could get my toes in my mouth but I would rather be able to wrap my leg around my neck.

The only thing that I know of that may help a bit is stretching exercises.
Why not do a google search for how the people in the cirque du soleil become so limber? That may be helpful!

yoga... not only does it help your flexibility, but it helps with strengthening your body and mind as well as balance exercises. 

I love it.

heh.  i had knee surgery 2 years ago, and the PT woman came in and said "ok, i need to see how flexible your other knee is, to compare".  i can hyperextend my knees (they lock bent "backwards" a bit, rather than a true straight...about 15 degrees, she said).  then i lifted the non-repaired leg and pulled my foot to my chest.  she didnt give me any exercises to do.  [:D]

the repaired knee will now flex the same as the non-repaired one.  i'm happy.

PS...  i think part of the flexibility issues is genetic.  some people's tendons are tighter than others....oh and bellydancing can improve flexibility too.

Pilates might also help or using one of those balance balls.

I have a balance ball I'm just not sure what to do with it.  It's why I'm looking for dvds.  I live in a very small town so there really isn't any exercise programs.

A fun exercise for a balance ball is to get a bowl of chocolate, and a beverage (coke or beer are wonderful choices) turn on some trashy daytime show, sit carefully on the ball, balance the bowl of chocolate on your lap, while holding your drink, then slowly lift your legs until they are straight.
Put them back onto the floor, eat some chocolate, drink your beverage, and repeat.
Do this as often as necessary to get the results you desire...

The New York City Ballet Workout DVD's are excellent for increasing strength and flexibility.  I love them, but if you want to gain and maintain 'extreme' flexibility you have to do it everyday.  It's always good to stretch in a warm room too.  Good luck!

i agree with just doing simple stretches.

make sure you warm up all your muscles with a good 20 min warm up session, when your muscles are warm enough, it makes them even more flexable, and theres less chance you can damage them.

i did use to be really flexable, and i done that just by doing some simple stretches which were in a book i had about yoga. doing these every day or every other day will have your muscles really flexable in no time. just make sure you dont strain yourself! and if you do, put something cold on the area, wrap it up in a conforming bandgae, give it lots of rest, and try to keep it elivated. sorry, ive seen this injury all too often!

make sure you cool your muscles down well after excersing as well,  a gental jog for a few mins, and shaking out ur muscles should stop them from going stiff the next day.

I admit i didn't read others responses before adding so i'm sorry if I am repeating:

the most important thing to Increasing flexibility is consistency. you only want to stretch your muscles a mere 10% more then tight.(that is a very mild stretch) but holding it for 20-30 seconds 5+days a week is whats most important.  you shouldn't feel like you are struggling to pull that extra inch every session.

I have never seen The New York City Ballet Workout DVD's but I'll look around for them.  I live in a small town so I don't have much selection out here.

That is what I have been doing so far stretching and holding it, I started with holding it for 10 seconds and I am now up to 20 seconds.  I'm trying to do this slowly so I don't strain myself.

Try doing a search on amazon on flexibility videos - they have them all.  See what appeals to you.
