I have seen sites like this one saying that you can use the silicone caulk from the harware store for sex toys. I am suspicious. What do you guys think of this?

I wouldn't use industrial products due to chemicals use in manufacturing, could have some very harmful effects on a human, there are warnings on these products for a reason. Seadogret

I think if you used a condom on your toys, you'd be okay.  You'd be preventing skin to toy contact.  Silicone caulk gets all over you when using it for it's actual purpose and the same with acrylic artist paint.  There are no ill effects. Yes, I know they don't normally get inserted anywhere.  That's why the suggestion for the condom, which I use on all my toys anyway.    My major concern would be with the thinner.
Also, you  could make "molds" out of clay and/or plaster and then just fill with the silicone.  I'd be interested in knowing what they use for the "in-store" models of these types of toys.  Does anybody know what material they use?  It has to be some type of silicone/rubber/latex base.

There are quite a few different kinds of silicone. They vary in chemical composition as well as hardness. Two suggestions are to use either a special effects silicones, as they're intended to be in contact with skin (http://www.smooth-on.com), or a food-grade silicone, as they should not leach/offgas anything toxic (http://www.culinart.net/silicone.html)

It's not a kit. This site is just some guy that makes his own toys.

I suggest using Aquarium Silicon Sealant.  I use it for my foreskin restoration.  It should be safe, as it is intended for fish tanks, and any chemicals would pose a threat to the fish.

A few tips:  Ice cubes work well for smoothing the silicon.  Someone gave me a great idea for shaping cylinders using silicon.  Get a bowl or pan that will hold enough water that it is as deep enough as the cylinder you wish to make is long.  Then get a tube, like a pill bottle, that is as long and wide as you want the cylinder to be.  Fill the pill bottle (or whatever you are using) with weight, small pebbles for instance.  You need enough weight to keep the pill bottle on the bottom of the pan.  Then fill the pan with water, to just below the top of the pill bottle.  Freeze the water.  when it is solidly frozen, remove the pill bottle from the ice.  If it will not easily come out, add warm water to the pill bottle and let the surface of ice touching the pill bottle melt a bit, just enough to loosen.  Then fill the cavity in the ice with silicon.  Let it solidify.  How long this will take depends upon the thickness of the silicon.  You can probably let the ice melt at room temperature as it solidifies.

Cheers!

Wait a minute. Can you use this sealant with plaster molds?

i cant say much about silicone toys, but one of my first homemades was simply modeling foam stuff you find in the crafts dept shaped into whatever design i wished then coated heavily with the rubber coating for tool handles... has given me many years of fun. planning on the next one i make to be a double so my wife can enjoy it as well

petdave, thank you for posting both of these links, especially the Smooth-On site. A very little browsing answered a question for me that arose on a different forum, about types of strap-ons and dildos...the Feeldoe looks very interested, but not even Google was answering my question--what the heck, exactly, is platinum silicone? And the Smooth-On site covers it.

Daughter of a chemist-physicist-engineer, I looked it up thoroughly but no luck until now. If anyone else cares, it's platinum-catalyzed silicone rubber. Which means that there's no platinum in the end product (good thing or we could not afford it!), but also that the catalyst that triggers the cure process is extremely unlikely to trigger allergies. (I know folks who are allergic to silver, but not gold. Platinum's next up the tree.)

Huzzah!

Get a tube and play with it.  i have not tried to use it with plaster molds, it is so sticky i do not think it would work.  However, there may be some type of material you could spray or coat the mold with.

That is the beauty of the ice mold.  It melts away, and water does not stick to the silicon.

But this is a ripe area for innovation.  And i think i remember reading something about a guy who had a way to efficiently make any length silicon rod he wanted using some sort of mold...

i have used wax paper to build the silicon object on.  When removed, it came off easily, but did leave a small amount of wax on it, which eventually washed off.

Cheers!

Mr. Wonderful got a kit like this so he could make a replica for me.  It was very cool of him and we had fun making it...er...making the dildo.

Any silicone, industrial or not, should be utterly harmless -- silicone is wonderfully inert stuff.  The risks relate to other chemicals piggy-backing in your silicone.  I've been looking into these sites with some interest, myself.

Food and medical grade silicones are made by combining two different chemicals.  Silicone results, and there are no by-products of any kind.  Every batch must also be individually tested for purity.  Skip the (expensive) test, and you have a lower-priced product that is functionally equivalent to the food/medical stuff.

Industrial silicones like silicone caulk are "condensation silicones."  The silicone is put into a workable, liquid state through the addition of some very nasty volatile organic compounds.   In theory, these compounds evaporate out in the curing process, and leave harmless silicone behind.  In practice, however, there is no way for the home user to be certain that all the nasty stuff is gone.  The makerealsextoys site, however, offers the best method I've seen thus far to ensure that a condensation silicone cures "clean."  The naptha that gets added to the mix (every bit as nasty as the other solvents, if not more so) should be the preferential solvent, and thus free up the original solvents to cure out faster.  The naptha, in turn, will evaporate more quickly than the standard solvents -- causing the silicone to cure faster, but also greatly reducing the likelihood of any detectable amount of VOCs being left behind after a day or two.  The method of applying the silicone in thin layers, rather than molding an entire object at once, also seems smart.  The more surface area you have, relative to the volume of silicone there is to cure, the more efficiently the solvent should escape.

I'm not quite convinced enough yet to start stuffing people with home-made silicone, but, once I have some more practice with this method, I plan to do further testing of the cured silicone.  If the VOCs have indeed cured out, then, to my understanding, my home-brew silicone should have no smell, no taste, and not burn -- those are all well within my capacity to check.
