And as a side note, you can also make grow beds and fish tanks out of plastic lined wire (heavy welded fencing wire) containers with reenforced marine plywood bottoms, and at about half the cost of the corrugated steel ones.

And as an edited side note-a reenforced greenhouse with fish in deep well tanks is MUCH less vulnerable and attractive to local predatory animals. Deer can't get in to eat the crops, and bugs can also be kept out-if you use airlocks and tight screening.  They will produce year round and can use wood fired boilers to warm them, even in winter.

I've seen estimates from growers of about a third of an acre being able to produce about 50,000 dollars worth of produce in a 360 day cycle. Gross, not net.

Raising fish takes a lot of electricity to run the filters but solar can help with that.  How do you deal with all the ammonia though?  As for heating with wood, you need a rather large area to pull wood from and in the long run (I admit, VERY long run) that isn't sustainable because by burning the wood you reduce the nutrient levels in the forest soil.

However, you are right that using technology is great and that the "old ways" are not always best.

The beauty of the system is the nitrifying bacteria in the gravel beds. They convert the ammonia into nitrates, which the plants use as fertilzer. The water returns from the beds pretty much free and clean in a balanced system.

As far as wood burning and forestation, there are many trees of chippable grade that grow very fast. Again, we can think outside of the box. Seperated fish waste solids can be run through worm beds, or in methane composting tanks-then used to fertilize the tree crop, replacing the nutrients used up in heating. There are a lot of burn crops that can be cycled in a season or less for fuel.

Chipped wood can be fed into a boiler firebox in much the same way as a pellet stove, and also be used to run electric steam turbines. Waste steam is then used to heat the greenhouses, and returned in a closed loop cycle.

I don't know if it affects every county in Michigan but in many we are not permitted to cross county lines with wood due to infestation. So if you burn wood for heat you are pretty limited.

no-kill shelters are common in cities where people give them money, they aren't as common in rural areas.

This is quite true. And the no-kill shelters, where I lived anyway, have a district and they won't take animals from you if you don't live in that district. And, of course, that district is the city - so people picking up animals dumped in the countryside can't use them.

I find it rather sad that people offer more advice for castoff, non-productive pets-resulting from pet owner irresponsibility.............than they do about feeding and caring for people.

It says some very disturbing things about our priorities.

Society is judged on how we treat our animals and those less fortunate, it actually makes me feel happier to see how many care for those who can not care for themselves :)

Money and career.

They can't get a job for the same income, or at the same level. The relationship doesn't work out and two years later she has been out of the field, has no place to live, and her future is seriously diminished.

We feed our pets and allow our children to starve. Those are pretty fucked up judgements.

Is this a thread about feeding and caring for people? Hmm?

Lighten up, just because people care about animals doesn't mean we don't care about people as well. However, it's a great deal easier to care and feed animals than people. People are more complicated. Let's say you've got starving people over in India and we've got an excess of cow here in America... well that won't work! Plus, you can't just care for them - you've got help them get to a point where they can care for themselves. Have you ever tried to get a group of twenty people to agree on exactly how best to do that?

It's a huge debate and nobody on a message board is going to fix the problem but we can effectively give advice on what to do with some stray animals in a particular person's backyard.

And that's why solving the problem of world hunger won't be done on a message board.

Assuming she is pursuing a career, I can see that as a legitimate concern.

Thank you.

Unless the Dom in question has a thriving business based out in the boonies, and can provide a career and opportunity. Not many women are going to want to toss everything to homestead at a subsistence level with a stranger.

I tend not to be very pc towards "disney america".

When asked, "What do you think of my cat?"

I'm likely to eyeball it coldly and reply, "Looks like you might get a fur hat and a few tacos out of it -if your'e lucky."

I wouldn't expect anyone would want to live with "a stranger".

And yet many women get to know strangers with the idea that perhaps this stranger may turn out to be that special someone with whom they'll live.
